Who: The best and the brightest high school students from across the United States will meet at the Denver Renaissance Hotel in Denver, Colorado to compete in the 2004 U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) competition. Sponsored by the Water Environment Federation (WEF), with support from ITT Industries and The Coca-Cola Company, the U.S. competition is hosted locally by the Rocky Mountain Water Environment Association.
What: U.S. high school students with water-related science projects participate in four levels of competition: regional, state, national and international. The National SJWP winner, selected at this competition, will represent the United States in the International Stockholm Junior Water Prize - the most prestigious youth water environment science research competition in the world. A broad array of awards and incentives are components of the competition: the winner will receive $2,500 and a five-day, all expense paid trip to Stockholm, Sweden to attend the SJWP international competition; the winner's science teacher will be awarded $500 toward enhancing science education for his/her classroom; and the student, teacher and school of each state will receive national recognition.

Why: The SJWP competition seeks to engage, encourage and support the interest of young people throughout the world in water environment and science issues. Its purpose is to increase students' interest in water-related issues and research and to sensitize them - as future leaders - to global water challenges. Founded in 1928, the Water Environment Federation (WEF) is a not-for-profit technical and educational organization with members from varied disciplines who work toward the WEF vision of preservation and enhancement of the global water environment.
