Doraville, GA -- The City of Atlanta encompasses more than 132 sq. mi., yet the population of the metropolitan Atlanta area recently exceeded five million. As people continue to migrate to Georgia’s expanding capital, more neighborhoods and retail spaces are rapidly sprouting to accommodate the growth. While the City of Atlanta’s exponential growth was celebrated for its direct relation to higher commerce, residents and city officials did not adequately assess the less attractive byproduct of record-breaking expansion: the increasing amounts of waste and wastewater and the resulting odorous gases produced by the densely populated area.
The Problem
Although the new high-value homes and businesses adjacent to Johnson Ferry Road and the neighboring Roswell Road are in prime locations, more than two dozen residents began to feverishly complain. However, their complaints didn’t involve the congested traffic, a common apprehension in the large metropolis; the residents were voicing valid concerns of the unbearable odors, caused by mercaptans and other exotic gases, escaping the nearby sewage air relief vent shafts just yards from their doorsteps. The vent shafts convey the odorous gases from the 16 foot diameter Nancy Creek Sewer Relief Tunnel to the surface.
Purafil Provides the Solution
When the City of Atlanta contacted Purafil and its local representative, Rob Thurman of Lincoln Associates about the lingering odor at the Johnson Ferry Road #2 site, Purafil gathered air flow measurements and began to exert its unparalleled ability to cater to the specific needs of its enduser. An outsourced environmental analytical laboratory was used to test the air for levels of gaseous contaminants measured in parts per billion by volume (ppbv). Carbonyl sulfide levels measured 6.8 ppbv and 4.8 ppbv of dimethyl sulfide were detected as the odorous gases within this area.
Purafil and Lincoln Associates worked cohesively with the engineering firm Jordan, Jones & Goulding (JJG) to offer the best solution in the shortest possible time. Purafil immediately provided a temporary Purafil Side Access (PSA) unit with CK-12 modules containing one pass of Puracarb® media and one pass of Purafil® CP Blend Select media to remove the odors and resolve the complaints within two days! The unit was designed to remove odors at 6,000 cfm and it was installed for one year until the permanent unit was constructed and delivered to the location. Once the temporary PSA unit at Johnson Ferry Road proved it could remove the pungent odors effectively, the City of Atlanta contacted Purafil and Lincoln Associates three months later for additional odor control solutions at the Roswell Road #2 location. Excessive amounts of hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptans were detected as well as carbonyl sulfide and dimethyl sulfide at this site. The urgency of the problem again required quick action. Purafil and Lincoln Associates provided a temporary Double Wall (DW) PSA unit designed to remove odors at 20,000 cfm within less than 48 hours! The temporary DWPSA was installed for six months until a permanent solution could be constructed and delivered.
Once Purafil learned of the odor problems the City of Atlanta residents were experiencing, the leader in gas-phase air filtration provided a rapid response and uniquely catered solutions. The temporary units, which were available in just two days, bandaged the stench until more durable units could be installed. The permanent odor solution at Johnson Ferry Road #2 is a single pass Purafil ESD Deep Bed Scrubber (DBS) containing patented Odormix™ SP media. The DBS removes high concentrations of odorous gases from the air relief vent shafts. The customized, built-to-order unit is sized for 6,000 cfm.
For the Roswell Road #2 site, the permanent installation was a unique Parallel Bed Scrubber measuring 15’ long x 8’ wide x 11’ high. This unit was constructed specifically to meet to the enduser’s needs, and it was the first one of such an immense size. In fact, a 15’ x 15’ roll-up door had to be installed in the Purafil manufacturing plant in order to transport the unit outside. Yet, in spite of the unit’s large dimensions and the newly installed door, Purafil demonstrated a speedy turnaround for both City of Atlanta locations.
Customer Satisfaction
The City of Atlanta was thoroughly satisfied with the immediate service, engineered equipment and media and this customer has since replaced the media in both units. The City of Atlanta Watershed Project Manager Ade Abon admits, “The units and media at both locations have performed exceedingly well. There have been no odor complaints since Purafil installed the units at both sites. The effectiveness of both systems is quite amazing.” Abon also contends the community immediately noticed the irritating odors had been removed. The City of Atlanta was also satisfied with Purafil’s engineered solutions and the company’s capability to amend the products to exceed the customer’s expectations.
