Grinders Help One City Close the Lid on Pump Station Repairs

Muffin Monsters and the higher-flow Channel Monster grinder are found in pump stations throughout America and the world.
If success is contagious, then one California county has proven that where one Muffin Monster is good, a full dozen is a whole lot better.

“They asked me what products I recommended when I first came here in the summer of 1995,” says Tom Peterson, Chief Plant Operator of Santa Cruz County’s Water and Wastewater Division, and I told them without hesitation, “The Muffin Monster: You install it, it does the job.”

Located about 50 miles south of San Francisco and 20 miles west of San Jose, Santa Cruz County has 12 in-channel Muffin Monsters in six of its pump stations. The county’s water and wastewater division is a largely rural-based service area of some 250,000 residents with a handful of light industries and businesses. Some 50 pump stations, ranging from 12 to 22 mgd capacity, pump wastewater through about 250 miles of pain to a 50-mgd trickling filter plant operated by Santa Cruz.

When Peterson came aboard, the engineering phase of the bid process was just being completed for 12 grinders, six of them to replace Wiesemann grinders. A competitor's grinder model needed replacing because of maintenance problems and the difficulty in obtaining parts, according to Peterson.

After a few technical delays, the bid was awarded in the spring of ‘97 to JWCE on the basis of superior craftsmanship. All 12 units were installed by the summer of 1998 and, according to Peterson, “have been virtually maintenance-free ever since.”

JWC's installation channel frames help make installation quick and easy.
“We couldn’t be more pleased with their performance,” he says.

Muffin Monster and Channel Monster grinders allow collection system managers to close the lid on pump station and wet well maintenance costs and problems. The grinders help eliminate pump jamming and blockages caused by clothing, rags, plastics, pantyhose, small rocks and trash. JWC's powerful dual-shafted grinders quickly shred solids into tiny particles that flow harmlessly through pumps and pipes.

Installation is simple and easy thanks to rigid steel guide frames (see picture at left) that attach to the wall and provide a sturdy support and retrieval method for a Muffin Monster or Channel Monster. The largest Channel Monster® can handle flow up to 66 MGD (10,500m³/hr).
