ASTRASAND Filter Will Reduce Nitrogen to Meet Effluent Limits

WARRENDALE, PA -- The city of Aberdeen, Maryland recently awarded USFilter, a Siemens company, a contract to retrofit its Aberdeen Proving Grounds Wastewater Treatment Plant. One of the most diverse testing facilities of the U.S. Department of Defense, the Aberdeen Proving Grounds sits on the northeast portion of Maryland and on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay.

As part of the "Save the Bay" initiative sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and supported by local politicians and environmentalists, the Aberdeen Proving Grounds plant is one of 66 facilities that discharges into the bay that is being evaluated for its total nitrogen and total phosphorus effluent limits. USFilter Davco Products will update the one-million-gallon-per-day (mgd) wastewater treatment plant process, thus reducing the facility's total nitrogen discharge from 7 milligrams per liter (mg/l) to 3 mg/l.

The existing process uses a 20-year-old trickling filter and clarifiers. USFilter Davco Products will upgrade that process to a two-mgd activated sludge plant that includes the new ASTRASAND® filter. The ASTRASAND filter is a continuous backwashing system that will be used to reduce the nitrogen level to meet the 3-mg/l limit.

"With state funding being slim at best, major system upgrades are simply not an option for many wastewater treatment plants. The ASTRASAND filter is proving to be popular with many operators- it's a near instant upgrade, at an affordable price," says Tom Corley, general manager of USFilter Davco Products.

USFilter Corporation, a Siemens company, delivers cost-effective, reliable water and wastewater treatment systems and services to municipal, industrial, commercial and institutional customers worldwide.

USFilter is part of Siemens' Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S), which provides innovative solutions and services designed to improve competitiveness in processing and manufacturing industries and in infrastructure. In fiscal 2003 (to September 30) I&S employed a total of 25,000 people worldwide and achieved total sales of USD $4 billion (EUR 4.012 billion).
