WARRENDALE, PA -- The United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued U.S. patent number 6,849,180 to USFilter Corporation for its General Filter Products' CenTROL(R) filter flow splitting weir design.
The flow splitting weir system is an integral part of the CenTROL(R) filter system which consists of four gravity filter cells arranged around a common flow distributor and backwash column. Water flow is evenly split by the flow distributor prior to entering the gravity filter cells. The integral distributor-column replaces piping normally required to carry water to and from the filter cells. A downstream effluent weir system allows backwash from in-service filter cells to minimize or eliminate the backwash pumping system.
The patent covers the design arrangement where the weir is used to both split the influent flow and act as conduit for water to enter the filter cells. The improvement reduces the filter hydraulic profile by up to 48 inches without effecting filter solids storage capacity. The new design also allows placement of the inlet valves to a more accessible location on top of the flow distributor.
