Ron Duecker Named President of JWC Environmental

Costa Mesa, CA -- JWC Environmental is pleased to announce that Ron Duecker has been appointed President of the Company and will oversee operations in the U.S. and abroad. Mr. Duecker, a veteran of the Company for over 20 years, will be JWC’s third President.

For 33 years JWC has designed and manufactured the leading line of wastewater grinders and fine screens, including the industry standard Muffin Monster® grinder. Mr. Duecker will oversee the continued development of the Monster family of products as well as further development of equipment for headworks, pump stations, septage receiving and sludge applications.

“We want to maximize our current strengths and add complementary products to our line-up,” said Mr. Duecker. “With one contact, people can find the right selection of products that will best fit their need.”

Mr. Duecker has spent 26 years with JWC, starting as a purchasing agent and moving up through the ranks to become Manager, then Director of Manufacturing. In 1998, he was appointed Executive Vice President in charge of day-to-day operations and has overseen corporate strategy in a number of areas, including international sales and licensing.

“I’m very pleased to have Ron in this role,” said Woodie Chambers (pictured above, with Ron Duecker), one of JWC’s founders and Chairman of the Board. “After working with him for many years, it is evident he has the passion and desire to continue the growth of this Company.”

Under Mr. Duecker’s leadership, JWC has added several key international distributors, including distributors in China, New Zealand and Thailand-countries with burgeoning wastewater markets. Mr. Duecker also supported the opening of JWC International in the U.K. as well as the expansion into European sales and service. He has overseen several key product expansions, including the addition of Monster Separation SystemTM fine screens. In addition, he oversees the Company’s intellectual property rights and several dozen patents.

“JWC’s success is a combination of our high-caliber people, our continuous development of products, as well as our attention to customer needs,” said Mr. Duecker.

Mr. Chambers has guided the Company through four decades of growth and expansion in the wastewater industry, starting with the Muffin Monster grinder in 1973. Today, the Company offers dozens of innovative products and has 150 people in offices across the country and around the world. Mr. Chambers will continue in his role as Chairman of the Board and looks forward to actively participating in JWC’s continued expansion on many fronts.

Grundfos Builds Wastewater Pump Factory in China

Bjerringbro, Denmark -- The Chinese market for efficient sewage solutions is growing rapidly, as many municipalities are upgrading their infrastructure to meet modern requirements. According to the Chinese governments 11th 5 year plan (2006-2010) there will be a total investment in wastewater treatment of 30bn EUR. This means that more than 100 new wastewater treatment plants will be built each year.

Group President and CEO Carsten Bjerg, Grundfos, says, "The demand for efficient, large-scale wastewater pumps now prompts Grundfos to expand its existing facilities in Suzhou, China, and we expect to triple our sales in the country within the next five years. Our new production facilities in Suzhou will help us give our customers in this region the best possible service."

The expanded activities also include a new research and development team. The team will be dedicated to wastewater solutions, aiming to find more new ways to improve wastewater management.

Group Senior Vice President Kim Jensen, who holds the responsibility for Grundfos’s wastewater business area, says, “We are fully committed to meeting the ever-growing demand for wastewater pumps in China and East Asia. The products in themselves are already much appreciated for their benefits to both infrastructure and the environment, but the future proximity between market and production will add new benefits of customizations to the Asian markets.”

Construction of the new production facilities in Suzhou is already underway. It will be operated by more than 100 employees and the factory’s full production capacity will be reached in 2008.

With the production of wastewater pumps in China, logistics in East Asia becomes simpler. Not only are transportation costs reduced, it also becomes much easier for customers to attend the extensive factory tests that are carried out for all our large sewage pumps and greater production capacity also means faster delivery.

Well-known design

The new factory will manufacture well-known Grundfos designs for the local market. The main focus will be placed on SuperVortex and channel-impeller pumps, initially on models with motors from 20 to 250 kW.

Grundfos’ existing production of the same designs will continue unchanged in Finland, where the factory will continue to make pumps with motors from 2,0 to 520 kW to serve e.g. the expanding Eastern European markets.  Both factories will apply the same stringent quality requirements, ensuring that e.g. the high environmental and quality standards of Grundfos products are upheld everywhere.

New Customer Service Unit

The new production facilities also give rise to the set-up of a new Customer Service Unit in China.

“Good service both before and after the actual sale, is one of Grundfos’ key features. Our Chinese costumers will receive the service you expect from a company like ours. That includes competent advice prior to purchase as well as full commissioning and maintenance service. The new set-up ensures that the total pool of Grundfos experience is placed at the disposal of East Asian clients,” Mr. Jensen concludes.

WEF Releases Free TMDL Tool Kit

Alexandria, VA -- The Water Environment Federation (WEF) released a new tool kit for third-party TMDLs. Developed under a cooperative agreement with U.S. EPA, the Tool Kit is final document in a series of outreach products developed by WEF’s Third-Party TMDL Development Task Force to educate stakeholders and encourage greater third-party participation in TMDL development.

“There are several reasons why different groups are interested in doing Third-Party TMDLs,” said Libby Ford, member of WEF’s Third Party TMDL Task Force. “Aside from the fact that permitting agencies simply don’t have the time or the resources to do all these TMDLs in a timely manner, local players may have strong opinions on the project and may be more likely to develop TMDLs and allocations that are more workable in the short- and long-term.”

A third-party TMDL is a TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) in which an organization or group other than the lead water quality agency takes responsibility for developing the TMDL document and supporting analysis. Often very familiar with local watershed issues, these groups – including watershed groups, local government and landowners - can provide valuable insights to the TMDL process and help leverage state funds, as well as the resources and expertise of other agencies and non-governmental organizations.

Third-party involvement in TMDL decisions may improve the level of stakeholder support, increase the likelihood of effective implementation of pollutant controls and increase the degree of public understanding of TMDLs and water quality protection issues.

"WEF hopes that the Tool Kit will encourage both state agencies and third parties to consider this innovative approach as a way to hasten the development and implementation of TMDLs across the country," said Task Force Chair Dick Schwer.

Intended for watershed management groups, industries, municipalities, utilities, local and state environmental regulators, planning agencies, universities and other potential stakeholders, the Tool Kit is available as a free download.

Printed copies can also be obtained at no charge by requesting Stock Code P07001 from WEF Customer Service at 1-800-666-0206 or pubs@wef.org

Free Tool Kit is available for download at:

New Desalination Plant for Hilton Head, SC

LONG BEACH, CA -- Earth Tech Inc. a global provider of consulting, engineering and construction services, has been awarded a $5.5 million design-build contract by the Hilton Head Public Service District, the drinking water and reclaimed water utility for the north- and mid-island areas of Hilton Head Island, SC, for the development of a new desalination facility that will increase access to affordable fresh water in the community.

Saltwater intrusion in the local aquifer has forced the utility to purchase almost half of its water from its wholesale surface water supplier in recent years. Earth Tech will design and build a new treatment facility, which will use reverse osmosis to treat up to 3 million gallons per day (mgd) of brackish water from the 600-foot-deep Middle Floridan Aquifer, a new drinking water source for the island.

“Ensuring a reliable source of drinking water is an issue that many communities face,” said Bill Webb, executive vice president of Earth Tech’s Global Consulting & Engineering business. “Our global expertise in designing water facilities, combined with our treatment technologies, will help Hilton Head meet the drinking water needs of its residents for years to come.”

Earth Tech’s scalable design will allow the capacity of the plant to be doubled to meet future needs of the region. It will take approximately 18 months to design and build. The reverse osmosis system will be constructed by Water & Power Technologies, a division of Earth Tech.

Earth Tech Inc. is a global provider of a full suite of engineering, construction and operations services to the international water/wastewater, environmental, transportation, and facilities markets. A business unit of Tyco International Ltd. and part of the company’s Engineered Products & Services segment, Earth Tech employs some 7,000 talented people, delivering services to customers in 15 countries. Founded in 1970, Earth Tech is headquartered in Long Beach, Calif.

Mr. Deshpande needs help with UASB reactor:

I was wondering what is the optimum recycle ratio for UASB reactor? Generally I employ 6-8 kg COD/m3/day loading rate for 2000-4000 ppm COD (lets say 1000 m3/day flowrate).

Then I also countercheck for settling velocity criterion i.e. velocity < 0.7m/hr. But if recycle ratio is more it might dilute the system.  Can you give me some suggestions?  (Click here to post a reply)
