Perchlorate Removal : Rohm And
Haas Introduces Amberlite PWA2
Philadelphia,
PA -- Rohm and Haas Company is pleased to introduce
Amberlite® PWA2 ion exchange resin, the first resin
specifically designed for the selective removal of
perchlorate from drinking water. According to the EPA,
perchlorate has been detected in water supplies across the
United States, and can interfere with iodide uptake into the
thyroid gland.
In
many typical municipal well contamination cases, Amberlite
PWA2 resin has been shown to be the most cost effective
technology solution to manage perchlorate contamination
concerns. This ultra-selective product achieves the highest
loading (removal) capacity for perchlorate of all available
ion exchange resins, with as much as 10 times better
performance versus other products. It can be used to treat
both potable and non-potable water.
For
more information on Amberlite PWA2 resin, or help with any
other water quality problem, please contact Rohm and Haas at

USAID : Announces $70 Million
Hygiene and Sanitation Initiative
NEW
YORK, NY -- Today, Dr. Anne Peterson, USAID Assistant
Administrator of the Bureau for Global Health, announced an
ambitious, new hygiene and sanitation improvement initiative
during a meeting of the 12th session of the United Nations
Commission on Sustainable Development in New York, running
April 14-30, 2004.
USAID
plans to invest $70 million over a nine-year period on
targeted health programs aimed at the prevention of
diarrheal diseases, a leading killer of vulnerable
populations, including approximately 2 million children
under five every year.
"Hygiene and sanitation have long been neglected, yet
critical elements of public health," Dr. Peterson said. "In
the face of the growing AIDS pandemic, we have more reasons
to be really serious about clean water, improved hygiene and
sanitation. Through our efforts and those of our partners,
USAID intends to reduce the suffering and death associated
with diarrheal disease worldwide."
Building on its previous health program experience in water
supply, sanitation and hygiene, USAID's new initiative will
focus on bolstering key hygiene practices that are proven
effective in diarrhea prevention -- safe storage, handling,
and disinfection of household drinking water; effective
handwashing; and improved sanitation.
Safer
household drinking water is one expected outcome of the new
initiative. Working with government, the private sector and
non-profit partners, USAID will explore and invest in
various technologies and promotional approaches to protect
and disinfect household drinking water, using different
techniques tailored to specific country, community, and
household needs.
About
1 billion people around the world lack access to improved
drinking water. For those that do have access to safe water,
unsanitary handling and storage practices can cause
household water to be unsafe for drinking and food
preparation. Household water disinfection and safe storage
has been shown to reduce diarrhea incidence by 30 to 40
percent.
Promotion of handwashing with soap is another important
component of USAID's agenda. International initiatives to
promote handwashing with soap will be launched in several
countries, working through existing national water and
sanitation programs, as well as through partnerships. A
recent review of available evidence suggests that
handwashing could reduce diarrhea incidence by 40 percent if
done properly and at correct times.
USAID's efforts will focus on these key interventions both
singly and in combination, a more effective approach to
preventing diarrheal disease.

University of Idaho
: Blue Water Plant Breaks Ground
Hayden,
ID -– Blue Water Technologies of Coeur d’Alene broke
ground Wednesday, April 14, on the Hayden Wastewater
Research Facility, a lab the water treatment company is
developing in cooperation with the University of Idaho and
the Idaho Research Foundation. Located at Hayden’s
wastewater treatment plant, the 1,200-square-foot wet lab
will showcase advanced wastewater treatment technology.
Blue Water was founded to commercialize a UI invention
that reduces phosphorus and other contaminants to
extremely low levels with high flow rates.
Blue Water CEO John Shovic,
Ph.D., said, "This facility allows full scale-up to treat
one million gallons of wastewater per day. We have
attracted significant interest from a broad spectrum of
stakeholders including cogeneration plants, municipal
wastewater facilities, food processors and NASA."
The high-flow test environment
provides opportunities not found in a university
laboratory, said UI Professor Greg Möller. "The Hayden
facility will be used to scale-up wastewater treatment
technology being developed with NASA funding for long
duration space flight.
“This new technology can be
targeted to remove trace pharmaceuticals, personal care
products, and hormonally active contaminants,” Möller
said. “These municipal wastewater discharge contaminants
are of increasing concern due to potential environmental
impacts that include antibiotic resistant bacteria and
reproductive failure of animals in aquatic ecosystems.”
This work is in cooperation
with the NASA Idaho Space Grant Consortium. Möller and UI
Mechanical Engineering Professor Michael Anderson received
a $30,000 grant from the space agency for the work.
The facility is scheduled to be operational in September.
"Blue Water has an efficient,
cost-effective phosphorus and metals removal technology,”
said Remy Newcombe, Ph.D., the company’s chief technology
officer.

TecStore Tank
The city’s tank selection
process focused on a choice between bolted tanks and
welded steel. “We considered a welded tank assembled on
site, but didn’t want to have to do sandblasting and
painting near the houses in the area,” Price explained.
“We decided to go with a bolted tank because the panels
are factory coated and shipped here and because the finish is expected to last longer.”
