One More Time : Arber Receives National Finalist Award

Click hereWASHINGTON, D.C. - The Lake Mead Membrane Water Treatment Plant received a National Finalist Award in the Engineering Excellence Competition sponsored by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). The competition took place last month in the nation’s capital in conjunction with Consulting Congress Day. This is the second consecutive year that Richard P. Arber Associates has been honored with the award. In the 2002 competition, the Aurora Water Recycling Plant Project received a Finalist Award.

The new membrane water treatment plant at Lake Mead is one of the first facilities in the U.S to use a dual membrane system to purify drinking water. The combination of microfiltration and nanofiltration allows passage of desired minerals with high rejection of organic compounds. State of the art technology that was designed into the plant includes nanofiltration membranes, ultraviolet disinfection, and membrane clean-in-place systems. One of the unique aspects of the project was the reuse of the membrane reject stream water. This water is blended with raw water to irrigate native trees and shrubs.

ACEC also recently presented Mark Beebe, P.E. of Richard P. Arber Associates with a New Face in Engineering Award as part of National Engineers Week. The New Faces of Engineering program recognizes 109 nominees out of 1.8 million engineers in the U.S. The program is designed to boost public awareness of the newest generation of engineers. Mr. Beebe was one of the top three young engineers in the U.S. to be nominated by ACEC. To qualify, engineers had to have worked on unique or high profile projects and/or engineering achievements during the last two to five years. A few of the projects Mr. Beebe has been involved with include: Lake Mead Membrane Water Treatment Plant, AZ, Alamosa Arsenic Removal Project, CO, and La Junta Water Treatment Plant, CO.

Richard P. Arber Associates is an employee owned professional consulting engineering firm helping municipalities, special districts and federal clients in the U.S. The firm provides planning, design, and construction services for water, wastewater, and water reuse systems.

Training : Small Community Environmental Professionals To Gather in West Virginia

Morgantown, WV-Small and rural community utilities face the same financial, technical, and managerial issues that big cities do. However, they face bigger challenges finding help.

Do you need to update what you know about drinking water or wastewater regulations? Maybe you need to know how to manage a small community system or assess your wastewater options? Help is on the way. Join us in Morgantown, West Virginia, July 29 - August 1, 2003, for the National Environmental Training Center for Small Communities' (NETCSC) Fourth Annual "Institute."

The schedule for NETCSC's Environmental Training Institute for Small Communities "Protecting Public Health: Water and Wastewater Solutions for a New Era" is now available. We offer four days of intensive training about security for drinking water systems, emergency response planning, onsite alternative wastewater treatment technology, and related sessions that can help assistance providers, local officials, and others involved with small communities do their jobs better.

The cost is reasonable and a limited number of fee waivers are available for local officials working in communities with fewer than 10,000 residents. Early bird discounts are available until June 30. Plan now to spend a few days in scenic West Virginia.

For information contact Sandy Miller, at (800) 624-8301, ext. 5536 or via e-mail at smiller2@wvu.edu  For Institute updates or electronic copy, see our Web site at www.netc.wvu.edu

Divesting Non-Strategic Assets : SUEZ Sells Its Fortis Stake

PARIS, /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SUEZ the lead shareholder of Fortis with 140 million shares (10.8% ownership stake), has carried out the following transactions, in concert with the latter:

-- 50 million Fortis shares were sold on the market through a "bought deal", with a view to a further sale to institutional investors

-- 70 million shares were cashed in through the issue of a mandatory exchangeable bond into Fortis, carrying an exit price between 17 euros and 20 euros with a 3 years maturity.

These combined transactions allow the Group to cash in 1.8 billion euros and enable it to reduce net debt by the same amount. Following this transaction, SUEZ holds 1.5% of Fortis capital (20 million shares). This stake constitutes an underlying position for the exchangeable bond issued in July 2000. These transactions were carried out at a time when Fortis share reached levels close to the share price at the end of 2002. SUEZ is no longer present on the Board of Directors of Fortis and thus demonstrates its divestment of this company, which has been the historical partner of SUEZ.

These transactions demonstrates SUEZ will to divest its non strategic assets before the end of the 2003-2004 action plan. These transactions have been carried out by UBS Warburg. SUEZ, a worldwide industrial and services Group, provides innovative solutions in Energy - electricity and gas -- and the Environment -- water and waste services. It generated 2002 revenues of EUR 40.218 billion (excluding energy trading). The Group is listed on the Euronext Paris, Euronext Brussels, Luxemburg, Zurich and New York Stock Exchanges.

Mr. Chen wants to replace a settling tank:

The settling tank in our plant don't work well, the bottom draw-off line is easy to plug. The inlet flow rate of the settling tank is 1000m3/h. The apparent density of the particle is 1.3. The solid content of the inlet is 1~2% coke fines.

Is it feasible to replace the settling tank with hydrocyclone?  What is the guideline to choose between these two?
