New P&G Technology Improves Drinking Water in Developing Countries
------------------------------------------------------------

ATLANTA, April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- A new product system, developed
by The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G), makes water in developing
countries germ-free, leaving it clear and drinkable.

According to public health experts, these benefits might encourage
more people in developing countries to effectively purify their
drinking water -- and, as a result, reduce illness caused by
water-borne diseases.

These findings, from a just-completed study, were presented
today at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's
(CDC) annual Epidemic Intelligence Service Conference in Atlanta.

The research was conducted among 100 households in Guatemala by
CDC epidemiologists Josefa Rangel, M.D., and Steve Luby, M.D.,
as well as researchers from the Medical Entomology Research and
Training Unit (MERTU) in Guatemala and P&G.

NEW PRODUCT SYSTEM

P&G's new product is actually a two-step system. First, the
consumer mixes a small packet of a powder in a vessel of water.
The powder contains both a "flocculant," which seizes and separates
contaminants in the water, and chlorine, a common disinfectant.
After stirring, contaminants in the water fall to the bottom,
forming a visible sediment.

These contaminants can include dirt, pesticides, toxic heavy
metals, such as arsenic and lead, as well as bacteria, viruses
and protozoa that are resistant to chlorine alone.

Second, the consumer pours the contents of that vessel through
a filtering cloth into a larger container for clean storage and
dispensing. A level of chlorine is left behind to ensure cleaner
drinking water.

Drawing on its knowledge of how to clean water and its expertise
in health care, P&G developed the two-step system, which is now
being tested. Patents are pending.

SAFE WATER AND THE WORLD'S HEALTH

Three million children die annually from illness caused by unsafe
drinking water. Diarrhea alone claims more than two million
children a year. Contaminated water causes more than half of all
diarrheal disease cases in children.

More than one billion people in low-income countries do not have
access to safe drinking water. The CDC estimates that providing
access to safe drinking water could prevent hundreds of millions
of cases of diarrhea and more than a million childhood deaths a
year.

PROCTER & GAMBLE

P&G sells 300 brands in more than 140 countries. In 1999, P&G
acquired Recovery Engineering, Inc., which makes the PuR brand of
home water filter devices. The company's new system for the
developing world is based on a combination of P&G's deep expertise
in water management and PuR technology.

Water, health and hygiene are the focus areas for P&G's sustainable
development strategy. Sustainable development looks at the
synergies among the environment, social equity and economic
development.

FWS Team Wins 'Top Ops Competition' For Fourth Straight Year
------------------------------------------------------------

ORLANDO, Fla., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- A team of Florida Water
Services operators from Central Florida has won the statewide
"Top/Ops Challenge" at the Florida Water Resources conference
for the fourth consecutive year. By winning the statewide
competition, Florida Water's team earned the chance to recapture
the national championship it held in 1999. The national
championship will be held at the American Water Works
Association Conference in June in Washington, D.C.

The Florida Water team of operators includes Glenn Whitcomb
and Jim Smith, Deltona, and Jim Hogan and Pete Roussell,
serving the community of Palm Coast. The team was coached by
Dave Denny, Central Region Manager, Deltona.

By winning the state contest, the team won the right to
represent all Florida water utilities in the national
championship.

"We are extremely proud of our team," said John Cirello,
President and CEO, Florida Water Services. "Winning this
challenge took a great deal of preparation and dedication on
the part of each team member. Their effort reflects well on
the level of professionalism and talent that our operators
demonstrate every day on the job in making sure that our
customers receive the finest service possible."

The "Top/Ops Challenge" tests the knowledge of plant operators
from different utilities, both public and private, in a "College
Bowl-" type match. Teams vie for the championship by answering
a variety of questions related to plant operations, safety
standards, maintenance and regulations. The team correctly
answering the most questions advances through preliminary rounds
to reach the championship match.

Florida Water Services (http://www.florida-water.com), a
wholly-owned subsidiary of ALLETE (NYSE: ALE), has more than
30 years' experience serving Florida citizens and communities,
such as the treatment and distribution of drinking water and
the treatment of wastewater. More than 500,000 Floridians in 27
counties rely on Florida Water Services.

ZENON Secures New Orders In Excess Of $17 Million
------------------------------------------------------------

ZeeWeed(R) Membrane Technology Becoming Obvious Choice for
Higher Quality Water

ZENON Environmental Inc. (TSE:ZEN.)(TSE:ZEN.A), a global leader
in membrane-based water treatment technologies, announced today
that it has secured orders in excess of $17 million for its
ZeeWeed(R) water treatment systems.

ZENON continues to maintain its lead and growth in market share
in the North American municipal sector with new sales of its
systems for drinking water, wastewater and tertiary treatment
plants.

"We are aggressively penetrating all sectors of the municipal
market with our proprietary membrane technology and expect to
continue this growth globally," said Andrew Benedek, Chairman
and CEO of ZENON.

Some of the communities to purchase ZENON's ZeeWeed(R) technology
for drinking water treatment are located in Alberta, Oregon,
Missouri and Puerto Rico.

ZeeWeed(R) membranes are the proven technology for removing
water-borne bacteria, viruses and parasites, providing a higher
level of assurance for safe drinking water. In addition to
being cost competitive, ZENON membranes also provide ease of
operational use for municipalities, producing higher water
quality in a single step process.

A municipality in New Hampshire will also be utilizing the
world's leading technology for wastewater treatment in their
community. ZENON's wastewater system produces a high quality
effluent that complies with the most stringent standards in
the United States.

Another community in Oregon has purchased ZENON's ZeeWeed(R)
technology for tertiary treatment of wastewater. Tertiary
treatment requires further treatment of wastewater to produce
much higher quality effluent. In the case of this Oregon community,
the re-treated water will be released into an environmentally
sensitive stream supporting marine life.

According to Mr. Benedek, these orders signal the momentum
currently in the municipal market for water treatment equipment,
and ZENON's technology specifically. "We will continue to
increase our market share in the municipal sector where we
anticipate significant growth worldwide," concluded Benedek.

ZENON is a world leader in providing advanced membrane products
and services for water purification, wastewater treatment and
water reuse.

Chosen as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers, the ZENON group
of companies operates from nine locations in North America,
six in Europe, and one in each of Asia, Latin America, and
the Middle East.

ZENON's products and services are marketed for a variety of
municipal and industrial applications through ZENON's offices
and representatives located throughout the world.

Trojan Signs Agreement with Netherland's PWN Water Supply Co.
------------------------------------------------------------

Contract to Extend Application of Ultraviolet Treatment to
Include Organic Micropollutant Destruction from Municipal
Drinking Water Supplies

Trojan Technologies Inc. (TSE:TUV.) today announced an agreement
with N.V. PWN Water Supply Company North-Holland ("PWN") to
collaborate in the research, design, optimization and
installation of ultraviolet ("UV") treatment systems.

These systems will provide both primary disinfection as well
as an additional barrier against organic micropollutants,
including herbicides and pesticides. Ultraviolet technology,
in combination with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in a process
called Advanced Oxidation, has been proven to effectively and
efficiently destroy harmful organic contaminants from water
and wastewater.

"Drinking water contamination is a growing global concern,"
said Hank Vander Laan, President and CEO of Trojan Technologies.
"We are extremely pleased to have established this relationship
with PWN, a recognized leader in the treatment and supply of
top quality drinking water in Europe, to implement a lasting
solution to a difficult micropollutant problem. Global
awareness of contaminant pollution continues to grow and it
is important that we develop and prove new solutions to these
risks. We believe that as the public and governments embrace
the need for more advanced treatment of drinking water, a very
significant market will emerge."

"We selected Trojan Technologies after an extensive review
process", said Mr. P.C. Kamp, Director of Production for N.V.
PWN Water Supply Company North-Holland. "Trojan has fully
demonstrated its abilities in both research and development
of UV products for drinking water and we look forward to
combining their research and design capabilities with our
expertise in advanced drinking water treatment."

The project, expected to be completed over a 2.5-year period,
has three phases. The first two phases are extensive joint R&D
phases involving piloting and prototype testing at a major
municipal drinking water treatment plant in the Netherlands.

PWN have conducted research on the effectiveness of ultraviolet
light and advanced oxidation for over five years. The combined
effort, leveraging the unique expertise of both parties, will
optimize the configuration of the final design. The third
phase is the final equipment manufacture, delivery and
installation of UV disinfection and advanced oxidation
equipment. The agreement provides that Trojan retain all
intellectual property rights associated with the project.

The drinking water treatment plant, located at Andijk, the
Netherlands, serves approximately 500,000 people and treats
approximately 25 million cubic metres of water per year. It
is expected to be the largest installation involving UV
technology in Europe and is the first of its kind to treat
micropollutants.

"Ultraviolet systems have, for some time, been proven as an
effective barrier against a wide range of pathogens, including
E.coli, Cryptosporidium and Giardia," said Marvin DeVries,
Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for
Trojan Technologies. "This project will optimize the design
of a UV treatment system, using Advanced Oxidation, that
will effectively treat a much wider range of contaminants,
that, with extended exposure, may be harmful to human health."

About Trojan Technologies

Trojan Technologies is a Canadian based, high technology
environmental company operating internationally. With more
than 20 years of experience, Trojan has the largest installed
base of UV disinfection systems operating around the world.

year on water research and have, over the past 5 years,
proven UV's ability to destroy organic micropollutants
from drinking water supplies.

Mr. Brayman needs help with sulfide removal from wastewaters:

We have a process that generates a wastewater containing
hydrogen sulfide. It is currently batch treated with lime
slurry, then hydrogen peroxide to oxidize the sulfide. This
stream is then discharged over a period of about 8-10 hours
via chemical sewer to a remote WWTP. The pH in the chemical
sewer is typically 1.0-1.5 due to HCl. This is usually effective,
but sometimes H2S odor is emitted from the sewer after the
discharge has been running for some hours (no particular length
of time). Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thanks!

Mr. Venkatesan needs information on oil/water separators:

I’m interested in incorporating an oil / water separator unit
for one of our process water systems. I work for a large steel
manufacturing company. I was thinking on the lines of a
centrifugal separator. Can anyone provide me with relevant
information and possible design units that will fit this task?

The process water most often contains a mixture of hydraulic
oil, sludge and suspended solids. We do send our water in to
a settler tank, and we are using a drum oil skimming device,
but it does’nt fair well against the large amounts of oil that
needs to be removed.

I hope someone will be able to assist me in this regard.

Thanking you,
