MaterialNet Expands Relationship With USFilter
------------------------------------------------------------
Completes Implementation of Custom Procurement Platform
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- MaterialNet, a
leading provider of technology solutions for the procurement
of direct and indirect materials, goods and services, today
announced the completion of the implementation of its Custom
Procurement Platform (CPP) for USFilter, a global provider of
water treatment systems and services.
The Custom Procurement Platform is a web-enabled application
that permits USFilter's purchasing agents to manage the entire
sourcing process from creation of a Request for Proposal (RFP)
through purchasing order execution and material receipt. The
CPP is a tool for managing vendor relationships, centralizing
and analyzing key purchasing information, and driving
efficiencies throughout the procurement process.
"As a company that has grown rapidly through acquisition,
integration and consolidation of our inbound supply chain is
a key issue for us," said Bruce Beavis, Vice President Strategic
Sourcing. "The CPP provides an excellent vehicle for us to

First Ultrafiltration Plant for WoSW
------------------------------------------------------------
West of Scotland Water (WoSW) has recently awarded a contract,
under competitive tender, for its first ultrafiltration (UF)
plant to PCI-Water. The treatment works, being built for
Carradale, near Cambeltown, Kintyre, has been designed by
PCI-Water, using Hydranautics vertically mounted ultrafiltration
membranes. This would be the first installation in the UK
using a Hydranautics based UltraBar system.
Located on croft land, the water treatment plant operates for
18 hours per day, treating 270m3 daily and serving a population
of 750-1,000 in the Carradale area. Currently under commissioning
test, the plant manufacture and installation was completed
within 32 weeks. The contract covers the project's full
mechanical and electrical requirements, installation of four
borehole pumps and a rising main at the site, typical of many
new small groundwater sites, which need borehole pumping to
supply the works.
Metals are present in the raw water supply as a result of the
local geology. Drinking water must comply with regulated limits
above which the incidence of metals presence is not acceptable.
Where levels are too high, they must be reduced to the regulated
limits, achieved on this site by a novel metals removal stage
at the head of the works. The PCI-Water design uses duty and
standby contact tanks containing calcium carbonate. Dosing the
raw water with sodium hypochlorite removes the unwanted soluble
metals, through oxidation. This precipitates and the insoluble
metals in the water adhere to the high pH surfaces of the
calcium carbonate media. The resultant fouling is cleared
using a backwash facility.
Conventional metals removal systems operate using pressure
filters with catalytic media. These are more expensive to
install and operate. However, the PCI-Water system, which
uses sodium hypochlorite as the chlorination media for
oxidisation, consequently provides extra residual chlorine for
disinfection in the water supply, thus removing a process
stage and reducing opex costs. The UF unit is also run on
chlorinated water which helps reduce membrane fouling and
hence cleaning requirements.

metals removal and process control shows that we can compete
well in the small UF plant market," said Sales Manager

Landmark Water Reclamation Project Approved for Orange County
------------------------------------------------------------
The Groundwater Replenishment System will provide a safe,
reliable supply of purified water for a growing region
April 3, 2001 (Fountain Valley, Calif.) -- Orange County water
and wastewater officials Wednesday night approved the first
phase of a $600 million project that will produce up to 140,000
acre-feet of near-distilled water through membrane purification
from highly treated sewer water. The Groundwater Replenishment
System, which is scheduled to be online in 2005, will produce
water for replenishment of Orange County's large groundwater
basin, helping to make the area less dependent on water from
Northern California and the Colorado River.
The Orange County Water District and the Orange County
Sanitation District are partners in this joint venture, which
was approved overwhelmingly by both boards of directors. The
first phase of the project will cost $352 million and will
help the county meet the future water demands of a rapidly
growing region.
"I applaud Metropolitan Water District of Southern California
for its many efforts to provide future water reliability for
Southern California in the face of cutbacks in the Colorado
River and threats to water from Northern California," said
Irv Pickler, chair of the Joint Cooperative Committee of the
Groundwater Replenishment System. "We want to complement
those water reliability efforts in Orange County with this
project."
The Groundwater Replenishment System will take highly treated
sewer water and, through microfiltration, reverse osmosis
and ultraviolet disinfection, produce near distilled-quality
water. The water will then be pumped via a 13-mile pipeline
to spreading basins where it will blend with Orange County's
other sources of water from Northern California, the Colorado
River and the Santa Ana River.
"The Groundwater Replenishment System provides us with the
water diversity we will need should any one of our current
sources be reduced," said Pickler. "The GWR System also
helps 'drought-proof' Orange County, which is critical for
a semi-arid region like Southern California.
Phase One of the Groundwater Replenishment System will produce
70,000 acre-feet of water per year, enough to satisfy the
annual water needs of 140,000 families. Orange County is
expected to grow by nearly 600,000 people by 2020, bringing
the districts' service area to 2.8 million, who will require
an additional 180,000 acre-feet of water per year. Without
the Groundwater Replenishment System, the county would need
to purchase more -- and more expensive -- imported water.
The water will be so pure that it will reverse a growing
mineral content problem in the basin caused by filling the
groundwater basin with Colorado River water.
As an added benefit, producing water through the GWR System
requires half of the energy it takes to pump water to Orange
County from Northern California. Phase One of the project
will save about 140 million kilowatt hours each year, enough
electricity to serve more than 21,000 homes.

Mr. Jeffries needs help with a settling problem:
Hello, I am new to this field...I'm am currently working
on a settling problem in at an SBR treatment plant. We
have a 200,000 gallon a day average flow, MLSS of 2800,
but we have had little settling....we do not have a
filamentous problem...the bugs are young and very active
...could they be too young?....also there is a carwash
connected to the system, but is not pre-treated; however
settling problem seems to start beginning in winter,
and are good during the summer....we have used polymer
which helps at first but doesn't continue to work after
a few weeks....if anyone could give info as what could
be the problem, it would be much appreciated...at present
I am going to try to increase the sludge age, but have
not found any information concerning what a good sludge
age would be for a SBR.

Ms. Hubbard asks about the characteristics of WWTP sludge:
I am trying to find out the expected characteristics of
anaerobic wastewater sludge in order to determine if the
concrete tank that will contain it will need an epoxy
coating? The plant will treat only residential and
commercial wastewater (separate storm sewer) and will be
located in the Phoenix area. The treatment process up to
that point includes screening, grit removal, and anoxic
reaction. At that point any sludge goes to an anaerobic
reactor. Here is where I am looking for the corrosiveness
of the sludge.
