Wastewater Recycling : USAID and PWA Inaugurate Pilot Program

Washington, DC -- The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture and the Palestinian Water Authority (PWA) participated in the inauguration of a pilot wastewater re-use program at the Al-Bireh Wastewater Treatment Plant near Ramallah. This program is a pilot for a Hebron Regional Wastewater Treatment and Re-use Program which will provide a new source of reclaimed water for use in Palestinian agriculture. Funded by USAID, this will be the first wastewater re-use project ever to be constructed in the West Bank.

Participating in the inauguration were Larry Garber, USAID Mission Director; Rafiq Al-Natsheh, P.A. Minister of Agriculture; Walid Hammad, Mayor of Al-Bireh; Monther Hind, Head of the Wastewater Section of the Al-Bireh Municipality; Fadel Kawesh, Palestinian Water Authority (PWA) Deputy Head; Ihad Bargouthi, PWA Program Director; as well as representatives from the contracting firm, CH2M Hill.

Speaking at the inauguration, Garber said: "The pilot wastewater treatment program we've inaugurated today makes clear the important role that reclaimed water can play in fulfilling the water needs of the Palestinian agricultural sector. In a region plagued by constant water shortages, the value of this new source of water cannot be overestimated. All parties involved in the development of this technology for the West Bank - the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture, the PWA, the American contracting firm CH2M Hill, as well as USAID - can take pride in their contribution. This new wastewater treatment program will aid the Palestinian local economy at the same time that it protects and preserves the environment."

The inauguration was preceded by a tour of the Al-Bireh plant's on-site greenhouse and composting facilities, and followed by a USAID meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture at its offices in Ramallah.

USAID administers the U.S. foreign assistance program, which provides economic and humanitarian aid in more than 80 countries worldwide. Since 1994, the USAID West Bank and Gaza program has provided more than $1 billion in assistance to Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza. Its water resources program combines the development of new water resources with an improved system of water distribution and management, and wastewater treatment.

Chemicals : Kemira Buys US Water Treatment Company

Helsinki, Finland -- Kemira has taken a significant step forward in our water treatment business by expanding the present holdings in the US-based company Kemiron Companies Inc. from 15 % to 60%. The parties have also agreed on the terms, whereby Kemira is obliged to buy the remaining 40 % of shares. Kemiron has annual sales of 90 million USD and 250 employees.

The former majority owner and founder, Mr. Lawrence Hjersted, will remain as a minority shareholder in the company, and will continue as President and CEO of the company.

"The United States are the world's largest market for water treatment chemicals and positive development for Kemiron is expected to continue with the shift in main growth areas to applications that favor Kemiron's core competences in iron and speciality aluminum coagulants," concludes Lennart Johansson, Senior Vice President, Kemwater.

From the start in 1992, Kemiron Companies Inc. has had considerable success in the water treatment market, and the company now ranks as USA's largest producer and marketer of a complete product range of iron and aluminum coagulants. The company has fourteen, strategically located manufacturing and distribution sites with headquarters in Florida. The primary production units are located in Bartow (FL), Mojave (CA), Fontana (CA), St. Louis (MO), Rowley (Utah), Houston (Texas), Gastonia (NC), Savannah (GA) and Spokane (WA).

Water treatment chemicals are one of Kemira's core growth areas. Kemira already ranks as the world's largest producer and supplier of coagulants for water treatment, with presence in 30 countries. The total turnover of Kemira´s water treatment business was around 180 million euros during 2002. Kemira strengthened its water chemicals business further earlier this year by starting a water chemicals plant in St. Petersburg in Russia and acquiring the water treatment business of Ageco in Italy.

Mr. DeRudder needs help with tank calculations:

I have found formulas for calculating a liquid volume in a horizontal laying tanks with flat ends.  What I am looking for and have not yet found is a formula that deals specifically with liquid volumes that would be contained in the "Dished" ends at any given level of tanks so equipped.

I would appreciate being pointed in the correct direction.
