Hi Everyone,

New Help Forum and Job Fair

We've been having some problems with our Help Forum and Job Fair, both are discussion-group type formats.  Those boards were slow to load and hard to maintain.  Well, we have installed a new forum software with more features, you can see them here, at these web addresses:

New Help Forum
http://www.waterandwastewater.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=general

The Job Fair is also running on the same system.  We have split the Job Fair into two parts, one for posting job openings and the other for posting your resume.

Job Fair - Positions Available
http://www.waterandwastewater.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=jobs1

Job Fair - Resume Search
http://www.waterandwastewater.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=jobs2

We hope you like these updates, and more importantly, we want your feedback on these new additions.  Please have a look at them, poke around, sign up, post your messages, then let me know how we can do it better.  Without your help, where would we be!

Our goal is to provide information to improve your business by using the resources available on the Internet.

Thanks,

Anchors Chlorine Atoms to Surface

Tnemec & HaloSource to Develop Anti-Microbial Coatings

KANSAS CITY, Mo & SEATTLE--(BW HealthWire)--Aug. 14, 2001--Tnemec Company, Inc. and HaloSource Corporation today announced the signing of agreements to develop and commercialize anti-microbial paints and coatings based on HaloSource's patented haloshield technology.

The new paint and coating products will use haloshield technology to anchor chlorine atoms to surfaces such as walls, floors and ceilings, creating durable and "rechargeable" anti-microbial surfaces. The coatings obtain their anti-microbial properties when rinsed or wiped with a solution of chlorine bleach. The technology is an outgrowth of groundbreaking research conducted by scientists at Auburn University.

Surface recharged with free chlorine and lethal bacterial collide with the chlorine
charged surface.

Under a joint development agreement, the companies will work together to combine haloshield technology with new materials developed by Tnemec to create the breakthrough coating products. Tnemec has exclusive rights under a license agreement to commercialize the products in North America for the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, healthcare and military coating markets.

"Haloshield technology represents an entirely new approach to anti-microbial coatings by taking the functionality of chlorine to an entirely new dimension," said Tom Osborne, CEO of Tnemec.

"We believe our customers concerned with maintaining an hygienic environment will benefit greatly from this advancement." "We are thrilled to be working with Tnemec on the development and commercialization of these revolutionary products," said J. Thurston Roach, president and CEO of HaloSource. "Tnemec is known for the quality of its specialty coating products and services, and has the ability to create new coatings incorporating our haloshield technology and bring them to the market quickly."

Established in 1921, Tnemec is one of the largest privately held companies in the United States specializing in industrial coatings for new construction and maintenance. Tnemec produces approximately 120 architectural and industrial coating products used in a wide range of protective applications for steel, concrete and other substrates.

Tnemec's product line provides coating protection for a number of different industries including food and beverage processing, water and wastewater processing, power generation, pulp and paper, pharmaceutical and biotech, industrial process manufacturing and water tanks.

Headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., Tnemec has distribution facilities in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Phoenix, Seattle, St. Paul, St. Louis and Benicia and Compton, Calif. Manufacturing facilities are located in Kansas City and Baltimore. In addition to the company's national network of technical representatives, Tnemec has technical representatives in Canada, the Czech Republic, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

HaloSource Corporation is a privately held life science company headquartered in Seattle, dedicated to improving health and hygiene through surface-active anti-microbial technology.

Water agencies account for 5-7% of electricity used

Water Agencies Taking Steps to Deal with Energy Crisis

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 14, 2001--The energy crisis has brought soaring costs and uncertainty to the water supply arena, but water agencies are working to keep costs down and reduce the impact of blackouts, the head of the Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) said today.

Speaking at a major conference on energy issues held in Sacramento, ACWA Executive Director Stephen K. Hall outlined an array of steps water agencies are taking to deal with skyrocketing energy bills and the threat of outages. The conference was sponsored by the California Energy Commission and the U.S. Department of Energy.

"Water agencies account for 5% to 7% of the electricity consumed in the state - making them the number one user among the state's industries," Hall said. "With energy costs representing up to 80% of a water supplier's operating costs, it's no wonder water agencies are motivated to find ways to lessen the impact on their operations and their customers."

Although many water agencies have been forced to raise water rates to keep up with rising energy costs, Hall said water suppliers are making great strides in reducing energy usage by installing more efficient pumps and shifting some operations to off-peak times.

Some agencies are pursuing on-site energy generation to help meet their needs and, potentially, provide additional capacity that could be sold to utilities or other users, he said.

Hall noted that an ACWA-sponsored purchasing cooperative has arranged for water agencies to purchase micro-turbine generators and photovoltaic systems at reduced costs. The cooperative, known as ACWA-USA, has also put together an energy consulting program to help water agencies evaluate their systems and analyze alternatives for reducing costs.

Water agencies are seeking not only to reduce costs but also to avoid the threat of rotating outages, Hall said. Water and wastewater agencies are not exempt from blackouts under current state regulations, and water agency managers fear that a one-hour outage could trigger problems that would disrupt water service for two or three days.

ACWA is a statewide organization whose 440 public water agencies are responsible for about 90% of the water delivered in California.

Ms. Woods needs ozone info:

Can you provide any feedback or information on the use of ozone to remove color in raw water eg. dosage rates, any precautions, side-effects/benefits?

I’m researching the use of applying the following process to site: Inlet pumping of raw water - micro-straining - ozone dosing - sand filter - GAC filter.  Gran Act Ca will be used only if color removal is not adequately achieved.

Have you any experience of such a process and any concerns with the same?

Thanks Zita Woods
