New : The Water and Wastewater Blog

Jacksonville Beach, FL -- The idea to do this weblog started with an interview at IAOCblog.com, hosted by the International Association of Online Communicators. It was in a Q&A with Joe Taylor, during IAOC's first week of blogging devoted to discussions about industrial companies.

We talked about how his two industrial websites WaterandWastewater.com and PowderandBulk.com have helped form a sense of community among his regular visitors, and I asked him if any of his regulars had sought to further the community spirit. He replied:

"Some of the regulars have suggested that we should build a tree house or start a club. There is a feeling among process engineers dealing with water treatment issues, that they don't have a way to congregate online with their peers. Who knows, maybe a blog could help serve that end."

So here's Joe's water blog. And you're welcome to dig right in and add your own ideas on how this community should be built. Whether you are a designer of water treatment systems, or a operator of wastewater plant or a maker of the machinery, here is a place where you can tell us about what you do, how you do it and how it might be done better...

Sold : Advanced Drainage Systems Acquires Hancor

HILLIARD, OH -- With the expiration of all applicable waiting periods under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act, Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc. today completed the previously announced acquisition of Findlay, Ohio based Hancor, Inc.

“Today’s announcement is about the confluence of two strong companies that will now become one great company,” said Joe Chlapaty, ADS President and Chief Executive Officer. “The result will be a vigorous competitor in the supply of storm water management systems that will allow us to provide comprehensive product and service solutions for design engineers, public works officials and underground utility contractors."

“An investment of this scale clearly demonstrates ADS’ ongoing commitment to promoting the approval and acceptance of HDPE pipe in building and repairing the country’s storm sewer infrastructure,” Chlapaty continued. “We believe the completion of our transaction will provide significant benefits to our customers in the marketplace.”

The new organization will now have 43 domestic and international manufacturing facilities producing pipe and fittings in 2-inch though 60-inch diameters, along with other engineered surface and sub-surface drainage structures.

“We will have an unmatched breadth of product line and field sales/engineering experience to support the industry in meeting the challenges of future growth and infrastructure repair,” said Chlapaty. “Now with the size and scale to enhance our manufacturing, marketing and distribution efficiencies, we will be in a stronger position to compete with manufacturers of concrete, steel and PVC pipe.”

The two companies are developing integration plans that build on the cultural similarities and the best business and product development practices from each company. Chlapaty stated that “successful integration of the two companies will be critical in our success going forward. Our philosophy is one dedicated to build and acquire the necessary technologies to provide the best products and services to our customers worldwide. Now that the acquisition is complete, we can hit the ground running with the finest talent and expertise in the stormwater management industry."

New : Two MGD Desalination Plant in Virgina

BOYNTON BEACH, FL -- A new reverse-osmosis (RO) desalination system, supplied by Aquious -- Water Equipment Technologies (WET), is now online at the Five Forks Groundwater Treatment Facility in James City County, Va.

The plant provides nearly two million gallons a day (2.0 mgd) of potable water. The output is blended with water from other sources so the facility is able to provide county residents and businesses with a total of 2.5 mgd. Designed and built for easy expansion, the facility is expected to satisfy the area's water needs until at least 2013, at the current growth rate. Aquious is the advanced liquid separation unit of ITT Industries.

The Five Forks Groundwater Treatment Facility, designed and engineered by Buchart Horn Inc. and WATEK Engineering Corp., contains five on-site wells that draw brackish water from the Middle and Lower Potomac Aquifers. During the desalination process, the brackish well water is forced, under high pressure through a semi-permeable reverse-osmosis membrane leaving behind salt and minerals. From every gallon drawn from the wells, the system yields 0.8 gallon of potable water.

The remaining 0.2 gallon of concentrate is then discharged into the James River via a 12-inch underground pipeline. This concentrate discharge does not adversely affect the quality of water in the James River.

Aquious-WET provided four RO modules or "trains", each capable of producing up to one million gallons per day (MGD) for a total of 4.0 MGD. Two trains are fully piped and operating, while the other two are available for plant expansion. County officials decided to purchase all four trains immediately, so they would be assured of having identical equipment when Phase II of the Five Forks project doubles plant capacity around 2010.

In addition to the RO units, Aquious-WET provided the variable frequency drives for the submersible well pumps, and a pilot unit to be used for the testing of membrane options and pre-treatment and post-treatment chemicals. Aquious-WET has also supplied the instrumentation, controls, computer-programming services for the plant wide SCADA system from well head to potable water distribution.

Michael D. Vergakis, chief engineer of water services for James City Service Authority (JCSA) said the County is pleased with the design and performance of the equipment supplied by Aquious-WET.

"Although we have only been running the plant a short time, and we are still working through start-up and completing punch-list items," he comments, "the plant is running every bit as well as we had hoped it would run. JCSA is looking forward to a long-term relationship with Aquious for support of the existing plant, as well as the Phase II Expansion. In fact, we are exploring options for moving forward ahead of schedule on the expansion."

Water Utilities Celebrate Defeat of MTBE Provision

DENVER, CO -- This week, the U.S. House and Senate are poised to pass comprehensive energy legislation. House and Senate conferees announced that the final bill will not include a controversial provision that would have granted gasoline makers defective product liability immunity in instances of MTBE contamination.

MTBE is a gasoline additive that has contaminated the water supplies of communities in 36 states nationwide. The likely cost of removing contamination from community water supplies is between $25 and $85 billion. Jack Hoffbuhr, Executive Director of the American Water Works Association (AWWA), issued the following statement:

"The elimination of MTBE liability immunity from the Energy Bill is a tremendous victory for water utilities, local communities and consumers. The resolve demonstrated by water professionals, municipal groups, safe water advocates and others should remind our elected leaders that the protection of our water supplies cannot be bargained away.

"While we welcome today's developments, AWWA will stand ready to fight this provision again if it surfaces in any future legislation.

"AWWA applauds the lawmakers from both parties and all regions of the country who listened to the voice of the American public and supported responsible stewardship of our precious water supplies."

AWWA is the authoritative resource for knowledge, information, and advocacy to improve the quality and supply of drinking water in North America and beyond. AWWA is the largest organization of water professionals in the world. AWWA advances public health, safety and welfare by uniting the efforts of the full spectrum of the drinking water community. Through our collective strength we become better stewards of water for the greatest good of the people and the environment.

Mr. Gerrits needs help with reduction of sludge:

I'm interested in experiences from readers with techniques for reduction of aerobic sludge.

I know there are several techniques available like mechanical, ozone and ultrasound. I would like to know what is the most used, is the easiest to use and least costly.

Further, I'm interested to know what it will do on nitrogen-, phosphate- and heavy metals levels in the water. (Click here to post a reply)
