EPA Orders AK Steel to Clean up Dick's Creek
------------------------------------------------------------
CHICAGO, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) Region 5 yesterday ordered AK Steel Corp. to
immediately stop contaminant discharges into Dick's Creek and
its landfill tributary in Middletown, 0hio.
AK Steel has two weeks to implement actions to prevent the
public from being exposed to contaminated sediments and surface
water in Dick's Creek. EPA said AK Steel then has 30 days to
submit a contaminant investigation plan. In addition, the company
must propose a clean-up plan.
EPA and Ohio EPA confirmed high levels of PCB-contaminated
sediments at Dick's Creek in June 1999. The U. S. Department of
Justice sued AK Steel this past June for violating the Clean Air
Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Resource Conservation and
Recovery Act.
PCB's are a group of toxic chemicals, once used as coolants and
lubricants. EPA banned the manufacture of PCB's in 1979 because
of evidence they accumulate in the environment and present health
hazards for people and wildlife.
Under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, EPA regulates
solid and hazardous wastes, from production to final disposal.

Meg-Alert's Motor Guard Reduces Unscheduled Downtime
------------------------------------------------------------
Saves on Repair Costs, Improves Operator Safety
Minocqua, WI - Meg-Alert has introduced a 480-volt version of
Motor Guard, a patented motor testing and protection system
designed to detect winding insulation breakdown in critical
motors. If an abnormal condition is detected, the motor can
be locked out, or a warning signal sent, indicating that the
motor requires attention.
Motor Guard provides early warning of motor insulation
breakdown that allows maintenance personnel to safeguard
against premature motor failure and the resulting downtime.
Downtime is reduced as critical motors are pulled out of
production on a predictive schedule rather than after
catastrophic failure. Significant cost savings is realized
when these motors are reconditioned as part of a preventive
maintenance plan rather than rebuilt on an emergency basis.
Motor Guard is intended to be an integral part of any
preventive maintenance program.
Operator safety is improved and adherence to preventive
maintenance schedules enhanced as Motor Guard testing is
conducted automatically rather than manually. This eliminates
potential danger when maintenance personnel manually megger
motor windings.
Meg-Alert manufactures low and medium voltage motor and
generator protection up to 4160 volts. This patented
technology is UL listed and has a successful 10-year track
record with both the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy.

Mr. Kathuria needs help pH control
We are a company into beverage packing business.
We recently did a line for bottling Mineral water in this
line our customer has the following layout/process.
The treated water is passed through RO plant and the water
values after RO are pH 8.0 ; TDS less than 7. This water
is mixed with the mineral solution(potassium salts) and
the TDS raises to 25 ; pH remains same. After this water
is passed through Ozoniser. Ozonisation of water takes
place with dosing of 2 ppm and after ozonisation the water
values are TDS 25 , Residual Ozone in water 0.8 to 0.9 ppm
and pH 6.5 or less.
Please explain us the reason for this drop in pH and what
factors can effect this drop if we need to control this drop.
Best Regards,
Harbinder S. Kathuria
