New Sponsor : Industrial Waste Water Services, LLC

Jacksonville Beach, FL -- We are pleased to announce that Industrial Waste Water Services, LLC (IWWS) has become a sponsor of Water and Wastewater.com.

IWWS has over 33 years experience successfully treating industrial wastewater. They guarantee to meet or exceed your discharge limits. All their systems provide water reuse without further filtration or treatment.

They offer specialized packaged water treatment systems for heavy metals removal, food processing, industrial laundries, metal finishing, petro-chemical, pulp & paper and other industrial wastewater treatment applications.

In October 2003, Industrial Waste Water Services, LLC was granted a patent on its new Continuous Metals Removal (CMR) process for removal of heavy metals from wastewater. The new CMR technology removes all common metals to the parts per billion level in a continuous process.

Initial markets for CMR include powder-coating, electro-coating and other metal finishing treatments at flow rates up to and over 1,000 GPM. Oils, greases and other contaminants are removed in the same step.

Because the IWWS system operates in a continuous process, you can run the rest of your plant without worrying about overloading the waste treatment system.

Lamar Coleman of IWWS said, "CMR process was developed to address the increasingly tight heavy metals limits imposed on industrial customers by municipalities. We wanted a continuous process that would eliminate the bottleneck caused by traditional batch-type metals waste treatment systems. The CMR system cleans the entire waste stream including all common metals, oils, greases and other contaminants in one continuous process at flow rates up to 1,000 gallons per minute in a single unit."

Sold : Siemens Completes Acquisition of US Filter

Erlangen, Germany/New York, NY -- Effective July 31, Siemens completed its acquisition of the US Filter Corporation from the French parent company, Veolia Environnement, Paris.

This $993 million acquisition positions Siemens as the market leader in the water and wastewater treatment business in North America. The worldwide product, system and service business of US Filter with its 5,800 employees and an annual turnover of $1.2 billion will now become a part of the Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) in the form of the newly formed "Water Technologies" division.

By acquiring US Filter, Siemens is expanding its business activities in the rapidly growing market of water extraction and treatment. US Filter is the leading supplier of products and services for communal and industrial water treatment in the North American market. Worldwide, US Filter has 157 branches, thus giving it access to a wide base of approximately 50,000 communal and 100,000 industrial customers. More than 1,000 patents protect the range of products and solutions that the company has on offer. Headquarters of the company will be Warrendale, Pennsylvania.

"Synergetic benefits arising from the expertise of Siemens and US Filter will make Siemens a strong and attractive partner for our customers in the water industry", explained I&S Group President, Joergen Ole Haslestad, on completion of the takeover.

Siemens, he continued, would internationalize existing US Filter business and use Siemens worldwide facilities to enhance the company's market presence and expand its business. Whereas, in the U.S., the move would open up a new sales market for Siemens products, he said, Siemens's share of the European water market could also be expanded with specific products and systems from US Filter. In China, he explained, Siemens would also be able to participate in the build-up and expansion of the infrastructure in the future thanks to its overall presence in all segments of the water treatment market.

Mr. Serrano wants information on biomass activity:

As far as I understand, in the activated sludge, the biomass activity will depend not only from the micro-organisms but also from the organic substrate features.

Under this principle, the biomass activity assessment could  be valuated from SOUR respirometry since here we include the micro-organisms concentration and their response to an specific substrate.

In my respirometry activities, sometimes I have been asked on how to perform a fast respirometry assay (screening type) in which we could valuate if the activated sludge is under normal activity or not.

Mr. Nutting wants know about recirculating gravel filters:

Does anyone know of examples of the use of a primary clarifier upstream of an RGF, without septic tanks in the collection system? Do you know of any process disadvantage of the use of a primary clarifier at the treatment plant to remove suspended solids upstream of a RGF, rather than by septic tanks?

Background:  My question concerns the design of a recirculating gravel filter (RGF) for a small wastewater treatment system, for a town in south central Washington. Typically, RGF plants are connected to sewer systems with septic tanks (or "interceptor tanks") at the houses to pre-settle solids. Also, RGFs are usually preceded by a large recirculation tank to settle and store solids, and to provide some hydraulic surge capacity.

We are investigating the concept of a RGF facility with a mechanical fine screen and a primary clarifier upstream of the filter, thereby eliminating the need for septic tanks at the houses. (Installation of septic tanks in an existing community is very expensive.) The settled solids in the primary clarifier would be treated and stored in an aerobic digester.  (Click here to post a reply)

New Tank Helps
Grain Valley Beat Drought

Located on the eastern edge of the Greater Kansas City area, the city has doubled in population — to 9,000 residents — in only three years.  Rapid growth was putting a strain on the existing water supply from its two tanks...
