Biosolids Recycling : Construction to Begin on New California Plant

Click hereHouston, TX -- /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Synagro Technologies, Inc., a full service provider of water and wastewater residuals management services, announced today that it has received a "Notice to Proceed" to begin construction of a state-of-the-art biosolids heat drying and pelletization facility for the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (District) which is expected to be completed sometime in mid 2004.

The facility, which will be built at the District's Wastewater Treatment Plant in Elk Grove, will process biosolids within a contained building to reduce odors. Further, the facility will treat air emissions from the plant using advanced state-of-the-art technology to help continue the "good neighbor" relationship between the District and surrounding residents.

"This facility is the first of its kind in the State of California and incorporates the most environmentally and technically advanced processing systems available," according to Ruben Robles, Biosolids Program Manager.

"Our environment and our community will benefit once this facility is completed and begins serving the residents of Sacramento County," stated Wendell Kido, District Manager. "The project design will enable this advanced treatment facility to be operated while having minimal impact on the neighborhood and allow us to deliver treatment services at a reasonable cost to the community," said Kido.

The state-of-the-art technology also provides another environmentally friendly benefit by recycling the city's wastewater residuals into an "exceptional quality" Class A organic fertilizer product that can be sold for use on commercial and residential lawns and gardens.

Approximately 20 dry tons of Class A biosolids will be produced daily at the Sacramento Recycling facility -- about 7,500 tons a year -- which will be marketed by Synagro and distributed for commercial and residential use under the "Granulite" brand name. Synagro currently markets over 150,000 tons of Class A (Exceptional Quality or EQ) pelletized biosolids annually.

"This will be a world-class heat drying facility and excellent example of how public-private partnerships can be formed to address municipal biosolids management needs, environmental challenges and local community concerns," stated Ross M. Patten, Synagro's Chairman and CEO.

The District entered into a public/private partnership last year with an industry team, led by Synagro Technologies, Inc., signing a twenty year contract to design, finance, build and operate a 7,500 dry ton/year biosolids, dewatering and heat drying facility capable of providing local residents with a long-term, environmentally friendly solution to their waste management needs.

Synagro is the largest national company focused on water and wastewater residuals management services in the United States, serving over 1,000 municipal and industrial water and wastewater generators in 35 states and the District of Columbia.

Aeration : "Monsoon" Aerator Redesigned for High Transfer & Mixing

Click hereMinneapolis, MINN. - Aeromix Systems, Inc. is pleased to announce the redesigned Monsoon Horizontal Surface Aerator. Incorporating a new low-profile design, the 2-40 hp Monsson is more stable and produces highly efficient oxygen transfer and basin mixing.

The design also integrates a new floatation system which allows for easy adjustment of blade submergence and system efficiency. A new scoop blade profile design maximizes the amount of water and the distance it is projected into the air to maximize aeration capacity.  A wastewater designed gyro gear reducer has been incorporated to better handle the high torque loads and reduce the amount of required maintenance.

The Monsoon Horizontal Surface Aerator was developed to serve the need for an extremely durable and all stainless steel brush rotor aerator for the harsh conditions of wastewater treatment plants.

Aeromix Systems, Inc. is an internationally known manufacturer of advanced aeration and mixing equipment used in the treatment of water and wastewater for industrial, municipal and aquaculture markets.

Stormwater : B&V Launch Second Phase of Research

Click hereKansas City, Mo. -- Black & Veatch, a leading global engineering, construction and consulting company, today announced completion of the first phase and initiation of the second phase of a three-year, $690,000 study of Best Management Practices (BMPs) and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) in the United States and United Kingdom. The project is funded by the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF), United Kingdom Water Industry Research (UKWIR) and the American Water Works Association Research Foundation.

Black & Veatch is leading teams in both countries in collecting information and providing guidance that will enhance understanding of stormwater quality management technologies and issues. Participants recently completed an extensive review of the scientific literature and survey of existing information on BMPs and SUDS in preparation for in-depth evaluation that will take place over the next two years. For the in-depth evaluation, the teams will assess performance, maintenance requirements and whole-life costs of selected BMPs/SUDS.

"The challenges faced by municipalities, stormwater agencies and others in controlling pollution from stormwater runoff are immense," said WERF Research Program Director Jeff Moeller. "Information developed from this project should provide useful guidance that will help organizations cost-effectively achieve water quality goals."

"Discussion of SUDS and BMPs is quite active in the United Kingdom, we are very much looking forward to completion of the second phase of this work," said UKWIR Director Dr. Mike Farrimond. "UKWIR members are anticipating the successful delivery of this collaborative research project."

Click hereThomasville, Ga. -- With advances in EMU pumping technology, USFilter is now offering a 100 percent, five-year warranty on all new EMU pumps for municipal use. This new warranty is non-prorated, and covers all wear parts, all rotating components, and all castings from defects in workmanship and assembly. Customers can take full advantage of the quality design and construction of EMU pumps, with total assurance in their purchase.

”Because past experience and recent documentation has proven how superior the EMU pumps are over its competition,” says Terry Rouse, sales manager of USFilter EMU Products, “we have decided to pass along our confidence to the customer in the form of a new 100 percent, five-year warranty”.

In addition to the new warranty, USFilter EMU Products has already in place a “Try-It-Before-You-Buy-It” program with both its pump and mixer lines. This program allows a customer to install a pump or mixer, test it in their application, and then return it if not satisfied.

It becomes a no-brainer, try it, buy it, and utilize the warranty. Try it, and if not completely satisfied, return it. We are confident more customers will be pleased than not.”

For restrictions and requirements on either the new 100 percent warranty or the pump/mixer trial program, please contact Terry Rouse at 229-227-8756. Both documents are available for viewing at www.emupumps.com.

Steve wants to know more about nitrification:

I must say this is a great site.  Been in the industry 20 years, but some of this stuff I did not know.

Can anyone tell me more about SND or simultaneous nitrification denitrification.  It appears this process is a phenomena (sorry about the spelling).  We seem to have achieved this with our own product, but cannot explain why it occurs.

Basically, we get nit/denit happening in the same tank at the same time.  DO levels are high - 60 / 80%.  pH at 7.2. Ammonia levels are at 0.1 mg/l. And we only treat domestic wastewater from the last chamber of the septic tank. It is great to get this level of treatment, but if we do not know we have done it, how can we fix if it goes wrong.  (Click here to post a reply)

Mr. Keenan needs help with activated sludge bulking:

We regularly get called in to rectify serious sludge bulking problems, (where SVI values can exceed 200 mls/grm). Normal corrective actions involving re-establishing optimum operating conditions that do not favour the growth of the particular filaments generally involve the WWTP operator in a relatively long recovery period where patience can be severely tested.

People sometimes recommend 'quick-fix' solutions to improve settlement and reduce solids loss in the treated wastewater during the recovery period, (e.g. use of chemical flocculation aids, chlorination, addition of activated carbon or inert clays, even chlorination, etc, etc.).

I am not so much interested in the cause of the filaments, as this can unusually be readily identified, - I am more interested in finding out about the types, and success rates, of any 'quick-fix' solutions used during the recovery period.  (Click here to post a reply)

Thanks,
Tom Keenan
