NSF Issues First
Certifications to the NSF Chlorine Resistance Protocol for Hot Water
Piping Materials
ANN ARBOR, MI - NSF International,
The Public Health and Safety Company, has expanded its certification
services to include chlorine resistance certification of
cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) materials. Hot water piping
materials are the initial focus of the certification program. NSF is
the world leader in standards development, product certification and
education services for public health and safety.
AT
Plastics, Padanaplast USA Inc., Vanguard Piping Systems Inc. and
Wirsbo Company are the first manufacturers to obtain listing to NSF
Chlorine Resistance Protocol P171. Their cross-linked polyethylene (PEX)
materials and tubing achieved NSF Certification after completing
evaluation to the requirements of NSF P171 for both Domestic
Continuous Re-circulation (NSF CL-R) and Traditional Domestic (NSF
CL-TD) applications.
In response to industry requests, NSF
International developed the protocol in the fall of 1999. NSF P171
establishes the minimum requirements for the evaluation of hot water
piping materials' ability to resist exposure to the levels of
chlorine commonly found in drinking water. Future applications of
the certification program are expected to include components and
non-plastic materials that may degrade prematurely after exposure to
chlorine.
"I am pleased to offer chlorine
testing to our customers," said Ron Coiner, NSF General Manager
of Water Distribution Systems. "NSF continues to work hard to
provide new and expanded programs to its clients and looks forward
to their input in program development."
NSF International, a not-for-profit
organization, is dedicated to improving public health, safety and
protection of the environment. NSF offers a broad range of services
in over 83 countries, including accredited food equipment
certification; comprehensive food safety and quality systems
auditing; HACCP-9000 registration and verification; certification
for water distribution systems; certification for dietary
supplements, bakery products and nonfood compounds; management
systems registration; and toxicology consulting. NSF also provides
learning opportunities through its Center for Public Health
Education.
NSF is a World Health Organization
Collaborating Center for Food Safety and Drinking Water Safety and
Treatment. Founded in 1944, NSF is headquartered in Ann Arbor, MI,
with offices and laboratories around the world.

Billion Water Treatment Market
BNamericas
Launches Water & Waste Industry News Service for Latin America
SANTIAGO, Chile--(BUSINESS
WIRE)--Aug. 6, 2001--Latin American business and industry news
provider BNamericas.com has launched a daily online news service
covering the region's water and waste industries, which was spun off
from the company's existing Environment and Infrastructure sectors.
"This
cost effective service has been devised to provide accurate and
timely reporting to professionals in Latin America's fast growing
environmental sanitation sector, thereby laying the foundations for
a sector-specific online community," BNamericas.com sales
director James Newbold said.
"We'll be keeping company
executives, investors, consultants and analysts abreast of
opportunities in construction and engineering projects, as well as
equipment and technology to expand waterworks and waste treatment
services across Latin America," Water & Waste editor David
Casallas said.
Latin America's general lack of basic
sanitation services means the regional environmental sanitation
services market will be worth some US$18bn through 2005, according
to a recent study by Washington D.C.-based CG/LA Infrastructure.
In Brazil alone, revenue from the
water/wastewater industry will surpass US$5.5bn this year, while the
services and equipment market will add US$2.2bn, a 20% increase over
record 2000 levels.
BNamericas.com's Water & Waste
coverage will span drinking water supply, construction and financing
of the necessary infrastructure, concessions, privatizations and
rates. Sewage treatment will also feature, as will irrigation,
desalination and waterway remediation.
On the waste side, coverage will
include solid waste (residential, industrial and hospital)
collection, treatment and final disposal, including landfills,
incineration, recycling, waste-to-energy and waste reduction
programs. Liquid waste coverage will include collection, treatment
and final uses given to domestic and industrial waste liquids.
About BNamericas.com
Since its inception five years ago as
Latin America's first online industry-specific news provider,
Business News Americas has built up a loyal client base of top-level
executives.
Today the company's 35 journalists,
editors and researchers - based in Chile, Brazil, Mexico and
Argentina - produce 180 stories per day, following company, project
and industry developments. Last month, readers of Latin Trade
magazine voted BNamericas.com the best online source of business
news for CEOs.
Articles are published online in

Agreement Positions American Water as
a Premier Provider of Integrated Water Resource Management Services
VOORHEES,
N.J. - Aug. 6, 2001 - American Water Works (NYSE:AWK) announced
today that it had entered into an agreement to acquire Azurix North
America Corp.
The transaction positions American
Water Works Company as a premier provider of water resource
management services in North America while expanding its existing

management services.
The acquisition strengthens American
Water's existing geographical position and expands the Company's
presence into the southeastern and northwestern United States and

Integrated
Bioreactor Vessel
State-of-the-Art
Wastewater Facility With USBF Technology
STRATHMORE, AB – August 3, 2001 –
A new wastewater treatment facility built for the Town of Strathmore
is now in service. The plant designed by Ecofluid Systems, Inc. of
Vancouver, B.C., incorporates their patented, proven USBF (Upflow
Sludge Blanket Filtration) process. The USBF technology ensures high
quality effluent that meets or exceeds typical regulatory
requirements including phosphorus and nitrogen reduction.
The
plant is designed to treat an average wastewater flow of 4,000 m3/d
(1 million gallons/day) for Strathmore’s rapidly growing
population and will be operated by EPCOR. Due to the modular design
of the USBF system, the plant can be readily expanded to meet future
growth in a cost-effective manner. This plant will meet the
immediate and long-term wastewater treatment needs for residential
and business development.
“We are pleased with the results
reported to date,” said Karel Galland, P.Eng, and President of
Ecofluid.
The Ecofluid USBF process is the
result of over forty years of research and development, testing and
practical experience. It is a modification of the conventional
activated sludge process that incorporates an anoxic selector zone
and an USBF clarifier in one integrated bioreactor vessel. This
compact, modular system takes up significantly less space and
contains few moving parts. The result is an efficient, highly
affordable wastewater treatment plant with low maintenance and
operating costs.
USBF technology has no inherent
capacity limits and is used in a wide range of applications. Plants
serving the domestic and municipal sectors designed for treating
industrial, food processing and agricultural wastewater are in
successful operation around the world. Ecofluid has established an
impressive international reputation for its USBF process. Elegantly
designed, simple and highly cost-effective, it is making a
significant impact on the wastewater treatment industry. In a 1995
report to United Nations Industrial Development Organization, Dr.
Lawrence K. Wang called it “state-of the-art…. an important
environmental engineering process revolution.”
