Oil/Water : Solar-Powered Oil Skimmer Provides “Unplugged” Cleanup

Cleveland, OH -- Abanaki Corporation, the world leader in oil skimming products, has released an innovative new design for its PetroXtractor oil skimmer that includes solar-powered capability for the even the most remote environments.

The PetroXtractor Solar Skimmer is designed to remove oil, fuel and other hydrocarbons from groundwater using recovery or monitoring wells. The solar unit allows for unattended remediation in areas where no electricity is available or convenient.

Like the standard PetroXtractor, the new PetroXtractor Solar Skimmer unit comes with any of three belt widths that allow its use in two-inch, four-inch, or six-inch diameter well casings. With the widest belt size, the unit can remove up to 12 gallons of floating oil per hour. Belt lengths can be customized for well depths of 100 feet or more, which assures hydrocarbon removal even when the water level fluctuates. The lower belt pulley is tethered to the drive unit to prevent accidental loss in the well casing.

The PetroXtractor Solar Skimmer can be installed in existing wells by mounting it on a flat surface above the well casing. Other installation options include an above-ground mounting stand and a below-grade manway mounting kit. To resist severe weather conditions, a 316 stainless steel housing is available, as well as a reinforced poly shelter for durable protection of the skimmer. Skimmer use consists of merely lowering the belt and tail pulley into the casing until the pulley is fully immersed, placing the discharge hose in a container, and switching the unit on.

The unit can be used anywhere where there is an average of four hours of sun per day but is designed to run constantly for five days without sun. Its standard configuration comes equipped with electronic control circuitry regulating electrical discharge as well battery charging. A float switch is available that fits through a ѕ-inch diameter bung hole on a 55-gallon drum, which can be used to turn off the skimmer when the drum is full. Abanaki also offers a 24-hour timer that can be used to start and stop the PetroXtractor Solar Skimmer at specified intervals.

For more information about the PetroXtractor Solar Skimmer or other Abanaki products, contact Chris Ott at (440) 543-7400 or (800) 358-SKIM (7546), or by e-mail: cott@abanaki.com.

AWWA : Utility Operators Test Skill at Meter Madness Contest

DENVER, CO -- The August 30 deadline is fast approaching for participants at AWWA’s DSS Conference & Exposition to register to represent their utility and test their knowledge and skill at Meter Madness. The competition will take place Tuesday, September 28 at 12:30 p.m. DSS is Sept. 26-29 at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, IL.

About Meter Madness

Meter Madness is a fast-paced competition held at DSS each year where contestants work against the clock to quickly and accurately assemble a specified water meter (models vary from year to year) from a bucket of parts. Each person is given two chances to assemble the meter. Officials then inspect the meter for problems such as leaking or dripping connections, safety violations, loose meters, or failure to register flows. Penalties are then assessed, adding to the raw finish times for the official time. The contestant with the fastest time, including penalties, wins. The current record is held by Lionel Galvan of Corpus Christi, Texas, with a time of 20.24 seconds.

Meter Madness is open to individual, active, operations members of AWWA or a regular employee of a utility member or organization member. For more information on the competition, visit http://www.awwa.org/conferences/contests/metermadness/ or email Lois Sherry at lsherry@awwa.org

Controls : Ametek Drexelbrook Offers Wireless Interface Solution

HORSHAM, PA -- AMETEK Drexelbrook—the leader in level measurement technology—offers an integrated wireless transmitter/receiver set that can be part of an integrated solution for harsh environments, hazardous Class 1 Division 2 areas or other locations where conduit or cable would be costly or impossible to install.

The AMETEK Drexelbrook Wireless Interface Solution is a unique addition to the company’s full-line of level measurement products. It eliminates costly cable and conduit runs by utilizing 902-928 MHz ISM band spread spectrum frequency hopping technology. That technology guarantees a license-free, interference-free link between remote devices and a control room. Typical installations include monitoring control of pressure, level, temperature and flow as well as switching and alarm functions.

Modules are available as a transmitter/receiver pair and come factory programmed, calibrated and tested as a set. Further switch configuration and programming are not required. Each set is given a unique address at the factory enabling multiple radio systems to operate independently in the same area without interference.

The transmitter/receiver set is tube mounted in a weatherproof NEMA 4x housing that is suitable for both new and existing installations. The transmitters are available in both AC and DC power versions. The receiver in DC only is suitable for DIN-Rail mounting.

Transmitters measure 279 mm (11”) x 57mm (2.3”) including Omni antenna and mount directly to Ѕ” NPT conduit. The space-efficient DIN-rail mounted receiver takes up only 102 mm (length) x 114.5mm (height) x 175mm (width) or 4”x 4.5” x 0.7” in the control cabinet.

Installation is quick and easy. The process signals are simply wired to the color-coded wires of the transmitter and output via wires connected to the receiver. No wiring is required in between. Typical outdoor range is one to two miles with no line of sight, four to five miles with line of sight, and upwards of 20 miles with professional antenna propagation study and installation.

AMETEK Drexelbrook is an international leader in the design and production of level-measurement instrumentation and a unit of AMETEK, Inc., a leading global manufacturer of electronic instruments and electric motors with annual sales of more than $1.2 billion.

Ms. Gonzales wants information on paper mill sludge:

Our group is planning to do a research work on paper mill sludge with 40% ash and 60% composite. We are thinking of converting the ash to something useful since it has a very high percentage in the sludge.

Can you give us some ideas on how we are we going to convert ash to something useful? what are other possible things we can do for this research. thank you very much.

Mr. Male wants know about UV vendors:

I'm looking to get some high-level feedback on what the major differences are (strengths, weaknesses) among the major UV vendors; Calgon, Wedeco, Trojan, etc..?

Anyone know if either has a significantly better technology/performance than the other in practice?  For example, Trojan's wiper technology?  Wedeco's in-house lamps?  WW or DW differences?
