Orenco Introduces Compact Textile Filters for Secondary OWWT
------------------------------------------------------------
SUTHERLIN, Ore., Dec. 6, 2000 - Orenco has launched a new line
of compact, pre-packaged onsite treatment systems that uses a
highly absorbent textile media and treats waste to better than
secondary standards.
In development since the early 90's, Orenco's AdvanTexT Treatment
Systems have been installed on hundreds of sites throughout the
United States - including numerous demonstration projects and
university testing facilities - and are now going through the
regulatory approvals process.
"AdvanTexT Treatment Systems are ideal for small sites, problem
soils, and pretreatment of moderately high strength waste,"
says Eric Ball, Orenco's Vice-President of New Product Development.
"We also have a model that does an especially good job of
reducing nitrogen, typically to less than 10 mg/L."
The heart of the system is the lightweight, self-contained
textile filter pod that, in most cases, is small enough
(4' x 2.5' x 2.5') to sit right on the top of the tank. The
textile media has a very high surface area for wastewater
treatment and can therefore support loading rates that are
5-20 times higher than for sand or gravel.
"Our AdvanTexT system works much like a recirculating sand
filter, but is smaller, less expensive, and easier to install
and maintain," says Ball. "We use an energy-efficient pumping
system and a control panel with a programmable timer to process
and discharge small amounts of recirculated wastewater throughout
the day. Like other recirculating packed bed filters, it's a
very reliable, very consistent process, even under 'peak flow
' conditions. And the treated wastewater can be reused for
drip or subsurface irrigation."
AdvanTexT Treatment Systems have already been approved statewide
in Arkansas, in Missouri, and under an experimental permit in
Ohio; under a "WPCF" permit in Oregon; and in the Canadian
province of Alberta. The larger, RX series has been approved
statewide in Rhode Island. AdvanTexT has also been approved
in Mohave County, AZ and in the City of Anchorage. Approvals
are pending in nearly 30 jurisdictions, and the product is
also undergoing NSF testing.
Company Orenco Systems has been designing, manufacturing, and
distributing leading-edge wastewater equipment since 1981. The
company's 165 employees work out of a 23-acre headquarters site
in Sutherlin, Oregon that includes sales, manufacturing,
engineering, and research facilities. Some 70 distributors
represent most of the U.S., Canada, parts of Europe, New Zealand,
Australia, and Chile. Orenco's systems are installed all over
the world.

Space-Saving Technology Meets Unique Size Requirements
------------------------------------------------------------
Syracuse wastewater treatment to receive $11.9 million upgrade.
Syracuse, N.Y., Nov. 21, 2000--The Onondaga County (NY)
Department of Drainage and Sanitation has awarded USFilter an
$11.9 million direct purchase contract for an innovative,
space-saving system to upgrade treatment at the Metropolitan
Syracuse Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The installation will include advanced technology for removing
ammonia and phosphorus, as well as a comprehensive control
and monitoring system including instrumentation, control panels,
and SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) that will
be integrated into the current plant-wide SCADA system.
The system will be designed to treat 84 million gallons of
wastewater a day (mgd), with a maximum wet weather flow of
126 mgd. USFilter will provide its biologically aerated filtration
technology (known commercially as BIOSTYR®), and its ballasted
flocculation process (Actiflo®). It will be the largest
installation of this technology in the United States.
The Metropolitan plant is located adjacent to Onondaga Lake,
and the length of pilings required to reach bedrock dictated
that the new facilities be as small in size as possible,
explained USFilter’s Terry Mah. "The selected process has the
smallest footprint of any commercially available alternatives
and will provide the lowest operational costs possible for the
high level of treatment required.
"The project will also save money through an alternative
purchasing process consisting of up-front process evaluation,
direct equipment purchase, followed by installation and
construction bids."
The BIOSTYR process combines a very high density fixed film
media with filtration, minimizing reactor volume and eliminating
the need for final clarifiers. Actiflo is an enhanced ballasted
flocculation/clarification process with short mixing times
(<10 minutes) and high clarifier rise rates
(51,840 gallons/day-ft2). Both technologies are marketed
through USFilter’s Kruger Products, Cary, NC.
Under a federal court order, the county’s metropolitan plant
is required to have an effluent ammonia content of less than
one milligram per liter (summer) and 2 mg/l (winter).
Phosphorus must be reduced to a level of less than .02 mg/l
by the year 2012.
USFilter’s partners on this project include the design team
of Environmental Engineering Associates, Inc. a joint venture
between Stearns & Wheeler, LLC; O’Brien & Gere Engineers,
Inc.; and Blasland, Bouck & Lee, Inc., all of the Syracuse
area. USFilter’s representative is Koester Associates,
Canastota, NY.
Following the design phase, the project schedule includes
contract award in the second quarter 2001, completion of
construction by mid-2003, and full operations by June 2004.
USFilter, a Vivendi Water company, is the leading global
provider of commercial, industrial, municipal and residential
water and wastewater treatment systems, products and services,
with operations in more than 100 countries. USFilter, which
is based in Palm Desert, Calif. invites you to visit its
