AWWA : World's Largest Drinking Water Conference

Click hereDENVER, CO -- The American Water Works Association (AWWA), the authoritative resource on safe drinking water, today announced several new events that will be unveiled at its 123nd Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE) to be held June 13-17, 2004 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

The premier event for total water management, AWWA’s five-day conference will feature a new technology showcase exhibiting the latest and greatest technology in one area. Also new this year, ACE is hosting the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Buyer Program (IBP) which encourages the export of US-made products by matching international buyers with domestic firms.

AWWA has invited international attendees from all around the world. The Water Industry Luncheon will feature guest speaker Lou Holtz, the only coach in NCAA history to lead six different programs to bowl games. Additionally, over 500 exhibitors will demonstrate the latest innovations and technology in the drinking water profession.

“The conference theme ‘One World One Water’ truly represents the global importance of safe drinking water,” said Jack Hoffbuhr, executive director of AWWA. “The collective knowledge and experience found at this conference provides water professionals with the information and tools needed to meet new challenges and continue to protect public health and effectively manage our priceless water resources.”

Other key conference events include the H2Open Forum discussing the link between the electricity and water industry, as well as the world-renown pipe tapping contest. Also, ACE will feature more than 70 technical sessions and 13 pre-conference workshops focusing on pressing issues such as infrastructure management, security, benchmarking, and legislative and regulatory challenges.

For more information on the conference and registration, visit www.awwa.org/ace2004 or call toll-free 1-800-926-7337.

AWWA is the authoritative resource for knowledge, information, and advocacy to improve the quality and supply of drinking water in North America and beyond. AWWA is the largest organization of water professionals in the world. AWWA advances public health, safety and welfare by uniting the efforts of the full spectrum of the drinking water community. Through our collective strength we become better stewards of water for the greatest good of the people and the environment.

Chickens : HydroFlo Provides WWT Equipment to Tyson

RALEIGH, N.C. -- HydroFlo, Inc. announced today that it has provided and installed equipment for the treatment of wastewater at a Tyson Foods chicken processing plant.

The HydroFlo equipment typically used for aeration of wastewater and for odor control in force mains is being used by this Tyson facility for an entirely different application. The application is called Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) and this adds to the list of solutions that HydroFlo is able to provide its industrial clients.

HydroFlo's core business is providing aeration equipment used for the pre-treatment of wastewater. Using the patented Pressure Line Up-Stream or PLUS pre-treatment system, customers begin the treatment process at their pumping stations, prior to the wastewater reaching a treatment plant. The company also provides a full range of related services to companies and municipalities to treat their wastewater at the treatment plant by the use of the energy efficient aeration systems in treatment lagoons.

"This installation adds a new realm to the technology that HydroFlo is able to provide. DAF equipment is used by a wide variety of industry worldwide, and our aeration systems provide a new alternative for high efficiency treatment of wastewater within an energy hungry world. This new application continues to add to the company's overall potential," said Dennis Mast, CEO of HydroFlo.

Phosphorus Removal : Blue Water Releases New Technology

Coeur d'Alene, ID -- Blue Water Technologies, Inc. has recently made a new phosphorus removal technology commercially available. The water treatment system, known as the Vandal-ION process, is capable of lowering the concentrations of phosphorus in wastewater to very low levels. Blue Water in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho has licensed the patent-pending technology from the University of Idaho.

Regulatory pressure from the EPA has driven both municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants to lower the amounts of certain water constituents they discharge to receiving waters. Phosphorus is one of the constituents facing increasing regulatory pressure.

Phosphorus is an essential nutrient in aqueous environments, where 20 parts per billion (ppb) is considered healthy. However, in excessive amounts phosphorus can lead to eutrophication. This condition is typified by rampant algae growth and subsequent water quality problems. Until now there has not been a cost-effective process for lowering phosphorus in discharged effluent to less than 500 ppb.

The Vandal-ION process is capable of lowering phosphorus to 60 ppb and below. This fall a pilot project was completed at the Moscow, Idaho wastewater treatment plant. Total phosphorus influent averaging 776 ppb was lowered to an average of 59 ppb. This result easily meets Moscow’s discharge permit level of 136 ppb. Two other troublesome water quality parameters, turbidity and biological oxygen demand, were also lowered significantly.

Additional process optimization can lower the phosphorus concentrations even further. The technology is capable of reaching a non-detect (less than 10 ppb) level for phosphorus with a multi-stage system, dependent on the influent concentration.

Blue Water Technologies, Inc. was established in February 2003 to commercialize state-of-the-art water treatment technologies. Blue Water’s products remove phosphorus, arsenic, selenium, and heavy metals from water and wastewater.

Help Forum : Hot Messages from the Help Forum

People post their requests for help and offer their suggestions to others in our open forum.

Mr. Brooks wants to remove dissolved hydrocarbons:

I am investigating an upgrade to our existing Dissolved Air Flotation Units.  They are used to remove dissolved phase hydrocarbons from refinery wastewater.

I know there are a number of alternatives out there but I need to know what technology has proven success at meeting the following spec:

Inflow 175 kilolitres per hour (klph)
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) 500 mg/l
Expected outflow TPH <10 mg/l
Hydraulic Capacity 275 klph

We are willing to investigate any technology that is proven, effective and will meet our maintainability and availability requirements.

Mr. Zhao needs an RAS pump:

As we design Return Activated Sludge (RAS) system for a WWTP upgrade and expansion project , we need a screw centrifugal or mixed pump (or other types of pumps you have for RAS application)  which meets following design conditions,

1. Capacity: 29.2ML/d or 338 L/s (5357gpm), head:  5 m.
2. Dry pit type
3. Only requires slight modification (i.e. change driver sheave)  to fit future use with a capacity of 35ML/d or 405 L/s
(6421gpm) and head of 5.4m.

Please provide a list of your applications of screw centrifugal  and/or mixed flow pumps (or other types)  with  same or  bigger capacity  and head as above.

Also, could you find out what is your minimum requirement for  water submergence measured from the top of  suction line in our case ?  Sludge chamber has an approximate dimension  of 3 m ( Length, where suction line tie in) and 4.4 m (width) .

If you  need more information, feel free to contact me  by email jack.zhao@earthtech.ca (Click here to post a reply)
