Water Treatment and The Internet, What's the Future Hold?
------------------------------------------------------------

Imagine in the future the Internet is in everyone's home, with
broadband-type service (or even faster!). Computers are super
fast and cheap....let's say $200 each, so you can have multiple
computers for the home and at work. Desktop computers out
number people 10 to 1.

The computer combined with the Internet has replaced television
broadcasting as we know it. Your TV is simply a computer with
over 12 billion channels. You can watch movies, go shopping,
or chat with grandpa (oh yeah, the phone thing has changed too!).

Bandwidth and computing power are free.....and plentiful.

What does this do to change how water treatment is done?
With our global population at 6 billion people, what will it
be in 25, 50 or even 100 years. And how much waste will
our relatives be turning out? Water treatment, both fresh
and waste water is population dependent.

What will the Internet bring to this mix? Here are a couple
of ideas we have.

TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER

In the next 100 years new technology will spread at the
speed of the Internet. Have a new process, new equipment
or better technology? Put it on-line and everyone who cares
can find out about it quick and at a level of detail
unavailable before.

The technology web site in the future will be a teacher, a
professor of the knowledge one wishes to share with others.

Imagine a new product notice arrives in your email box.
(Yes, Thomas, email is part of our future!) You open the
email and the announcer in the video that plays explains
that the New Zero Emission, Zero Metals, Water Treatment
System is available. And uses 20% less power than
conventional laser water treatment systems! For more
information say the word "ZERO" or click here.

You bite, saying "ZERO" off you go to the company's web
site. Once the site you have access to a water treatment
simulator, where you can plug in your water's composition
and the simulator generates the projected clean water
analysis, waste volumes and creates a system, priced with
delivery and installation included.

But you have questions....

Speaking to your computer again, you say the word "ASSISTANCE".
Up pops a smaller window in the corner of the screen with
an engineer, John, ready to discuss your questions in more
detail. You ask about the sodium removal and John tells
you that he's got just the answer. With a few clicks of the
computer John make changes to the system, problem solved.
His modified plant design and data are shared with you
immediately on-line, on your computer monitor.

When done, John thanks you for your interest and sends
over a full proposal, with detailed, 3-dimensional
engineering drawings of the New Zero Emission, Zero
Metals, Water Treatment System via email for you
to review with your associates.

PROCUREMENT

You are the head of a busy municipality's engineering group.
A new water treatment plant has been designed, engineered
and going out for bid. You release the project to the
city purchasing department who posted the bid on their
procurement web site. Because all the information is
electronically transferred no plans have to be printed and
distributed, just electronically transferred from engineering
firm to city engineer to procurement department.

On the city's procurement web site it is announced that the
bid day is July 12th, 2033 from 1 to 4 PM. Qualified bidders
to apply on or before the 10th of July. All technical
and detailed drawing are available on-line. Sealed bids
are no longer used they are just like "wheels on a car" or
"the buggy whip", who needs them! Automatic notifications
about the upcoming bid are emailed out to the interested
contractors on the city's vendor list.

On the bid day, prequalified contractors are emailed their
password to the bidding room and for 3 hours they "duke-it-out"
openly bidding for the project in the bid room. Because they
can all see each others bids, the fight is intense. By 3:30 PM
all but two contractors dropped out. At 4 PM the bidding room
is electronically sealed and the apparent low bidder is announced
on the home page of the procurement web site.

Open bidding on projects in the year 2033 has reduced government
spending by 20%. Who would ever want to go back to sealed
bids!

What are your ideas about the future of the water treatment
industry in the years to come? Drop us a line and let us know
what you think! The future holds great improvements for everyone.
The above is just a couple of ideas that are becoming reality
for us now.

Make Your Computer Ready for the New Year
------------------------------------------------------------

As we approach the New Year, this is a good time to remember
to update your personal and work computer programs. This is
a personal ritual I do during the holiday "slow down", if it
can be called that.

Here is what to look for:

Operating System: If you are using Windows there are a number
of patches and updates to your operating system. Most important
of those are Y2K related updates. I know that for WIN 98 there
are several patches and updates available from Microsoft. Make
a point to visit their site at http://www.microsoft.com/ and
check for these and other software updates available on their
web site.

Financial Programs: Most financial or check book type programs
have date-related information and should be checked and patched.
The two programs I use, Quickbooks and Quicken both have patches
or revisions to update the programs and make them Y2K compliant.
An interesting note from their site was that Quicken recommended
that the updates be installed BEFORE the year end to prevent
any kind of problems. Other programs like this include Money
by Microsoft. You should check your software vendor's home
page for more information.

Critical Programs: Do you use a data base sales program or
calendar program? Anti-virus software is one such program.
Browsers are constantly being updated with security patches,
etc. Find the programs that you can not do without and make
sure that they have the latest patches for Y2K.

Take a moment when things get a little slow this holiday
season and make sure your computer ready for the new year.

People post their requests for help and offer their suggestions
to others in our open forum.

Mr. Iftakhar wants to cut the sodium out of the hide:

We are producers of glue from buffalo and cow rawhide cuttings.
We are now making manure from the sludge taken out from the
effluent treatment plant.

However because of the use of sodium sulfide and salt, our
sodium percentage is quite high in the manure. How to reduce
the sodium percentage in the manure?

Regards,
A. Iftakhar

Mr. Gamble also wants help with sodium:

Could anyone explain the benefits of using calcium
chloride in the secondary treatment side of a wastewater
treatment plant. This plant has high amounts of sodium
coming into it in comparison to the calcium, potassium
and phosphorous. It is in an oil refinery setting and
there is no source control. Rather than having good
nitrification I believe there is just absorption. The
sludges also settle badly and the bacteria is usually
young and does not complete its log growth.

Mr. Anjum wants to get the smell out of rendering:

We are running a poultry slaughter waste (rendering)
recycling unit in process a heavily pungent smelling
water is obtained. We wish to get rid of the bad smell
to the maximum extent.

Mr. Benz needs a resin trap:

Looking for a resin trap for a paper mill application.
They asked for a "McCormack Model 4300-12", thus it's a
pretty good indication there is such a device. I found
others, but could not locate the one listed above which
they are requesting.
