Acquires Competing Manufacture

WEDECO Expands in Australia

The use of UV disinfection is growing strongly in Australia. Several large orders for WEDECO AG Water Technology Systems have been obtained by Wedeco's Agents, including the largest wastewater disinfection system in Australia, the Cronulla Sewage Treatment Plant in Sydney.

Click hereNew technologies and applications from WEDECO AG Water Technology (WEDECO), the worldwide market leader in ultraviolet disinfection of water, will ensure continuation of the growth of UV Disinfection and also a wider adoption of the use of ozone, so it is appropriate that WEDECO increase its presence and support to its customers in Australia.

This has now been done by the 100% acquisition of Australian Ultra-Violet Products Manufacturing Pty Ltd., which specializes in applications for the municipal, industrial and domestic market for ultraviolet disinfection of water and has long established service and support facilities.

The new subsidiary will be headquartered in Sydney under the name of WEDECO AVP Pty. Ltd. Ross Dive; the previous owner of Australian Ultra-Violet Products will manage the subsidiary. The existing staff will form the nucleus of the expanded operation.

Ross Dive and his staff welcome the opportunity to be part of the WEDECO group and to be able to take advantage of the expertise, advanced technology and continued intensive R&D development available from that group. This will markedly increase the local support for the users of ultraviolet and ozone equipment in Australia. All look forward to being of continuing service to their extensive list of local and international clients and to all of the existing and future clients of WEDECO.

Already market leader in Australia, WEDECO expects this acquisition and the combining of activities on the municipal, industrial and domestic market will result in a tremendous intensification of business activities in this country. The municipal market for drinking and wastewater disinfection will continue to be served by Clem Hinchliffe and Iain Johnson.

Supply of 22 Wastewater Screens

Headworks Awarded Landmark Contract in Michigan

HOUSTON - Nov. 29, 2001 - One of the largest screening contracts ever awarded went to Houston-based Headworks Inc. to supply 22 wastewater screens, valued at $2.4 million as part of the fulfillment of "Contract 4" of the George W. Kuhn Drain Improvements project in Oakland County, Mich.

Click hereConstruction work commenced on Contract 4 in Oct. 2001. Contract 4 covers the construction of additional retention treatment facility (RTF) capacity to handle excess wet weather flows, and the rerouting of select stormwater and combined sewer flows to alternate locations.

Drain Commissioner, John P. McCulloch said that, "When completed in 2005, this facility will be the largest retention treatment facility in Michigan and among the largest in the country." The improvements will serve a drainage area of 24,500 acres across 14 communities. Total system storage will increase to 124 million gallons, and "will provide treatment for any flows exceeding storage capacity," McCulloch said.

The GWK Drain Team, led by Tetra Tech MPS (TTMPS), of Ann Arbor, Mich., awarded the contract to provide the fine screens to Headworks Inc. because the equipment met the stringent requirements of the project. Sr. Vice President of TTMPS, Dr. Khalil Atasi, noted that the Headworks Mahr Bar Screens "were the best fit" for the uniquely-shaped weirs and the number of diversion structures because of the their "exceptionally low headloss."

Impetus for the project was spurred in the mid-1990s when public focus on water quality issues became front page news with the closing of public beaches along Lake St. Clair. Concerns centered on the quality and volume of combined sewer overflow discharges coming from the Twelve Towns Drain RTF (now known as the George W. Kuhn Drain RTF) after major storm events. To address these concerns, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality reissued the RTF's permit with more stringent requirements.

The 14 communities include the cities of Berkley, Birmingham, Clawson, Ferndale, Hazel Park, Huntington Woods, Madison Heights, Oak Park, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak, Southfield, Troy along with Royal Oak Township and the Village of Beverly Hills.

Headworks Inc. manufactures and distributes screening equipment to the water and wastewater industry worldwide from its Houston headquarters. Visit the Headworks Web site at http://www.headworksusa.com/.

Sold to Perrier

Ionics Agrees to Sell Aqua Cool Pure Bottled Water Business

WATERTOWN, Mass., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Ionics, Incorporated (NYSE: ION) announced today that it had entered into agreements with affiliates of Perrier-Vittel S.A., a subsidiary of Nestle S.A., to sell its Aqua Cool Pure Bottled Water operations in the United States, the United Kingdom and France for $220 million, subject to certain adjustments. The closing of the transaction, which is expected to occur near year-end, is conditioned among other things upon the expiration of the 30-day waiting period following notification under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act.

Commenting on the forthcoming transaction, Arthur L. Goldstein, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Ionics, stated "Ionics is selling its Aqua Cool Pure Bottled Water business, which is currently generating revenues of over $70 million per year, primarily to enable greater corporate focus on its activities in water desalination, water reuse, surface water purification, ultrapure water and water quality instrumentation. These growing businesses, in which Ionics is a world leader, are based on Ionics' core technologies in membrane-based water treatment and are expected to require substantial resources and capital commitments in the future."

"The sale to the Perrier Group will enable us to direct resources to the growing worldwide "build, own and operate" market for water and wastewater systems, to decrease corporate debt and to pursue new opportunities for growth within the areas of our core competence. We are very pleased and confident that the Aqua Cool customer base in 33 locations in the United States, the United Kingdom and France will continue to be well-served by Perrier-Vittel. We believe this transaction will be in the best interests of the Company and its shareholders."

Ionics is a global separations technology company involved in the manufacture and sale of membranes, equipment and own and operate services for the purification, disinfection, concentration, treatment and analysis of water, wastewater and ultrapure water. Over a period of more than 50 years Ionics has built more desalination plants than any company in the world. Ionics has been a pioneer in purified water with its worldwide five-gallon brand, Aqua Cool Pure Bottled Water.

$3 Million Contract

USFilter to Supply Filtration Systems for Crude Expansion

PALM DESERT, Calif., Nov. 29, 2001 – USFilter will supply filtration and demineralization equipment for Petrolera Ameriven’s Hamaca Crude Upgrader Project in eastern Venezuela. Petrolera Ameriven is a joint operating company comprised of Texaco Inc., Phillips Petroleum Company, and Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PdVSA).

USFilter will provide a reverse osmosis (RO) demineralization system, amine sump condensate/water granular activated carbon, cooling tower filters, and granular activated carbon canisters, to be installed at the Jose, Venezuela refinery in March 2002. The RO system will reduce minerals in the water to prevent scaling, carbon filters will remove hydrocarbons, and multimedia vessels will filter out solids. The contract is valued at approximately $3 million.

The contract engineering firm for the Hamaca project is Grupo Alvica, LLC, a joint venture between Fluor Daniel Corporation and Inelectra.

Bill Himebaugh, USFilter’s Western Region account manager for the Hamaca Crude Upgrader Project said, “USFilter is excited to work with these industry leaders on such a significant project. Some of the top names in the oil and gas industry use our equipment. USFilter looks forward to helping Grupo Alvica make the Hamaca project a showcase for the industry.”

With a total estimated value of $3.5 billion, the Hamaca Crude Upgrader Project entails transporting heavy crude from Venezuela’s Orinoco Belt 140 miles north to the Caribbean coastal Jose Industrial Complex, currently under construction. The upgrading site will then produce 170 million barrels per day of a medium-gravity, synthetic crude, with a gravity of about 26 degrees API. The high value oil will then be exported internationally, beginning in early 2004.

Texaco Inc., Phillips Petroleum Company, and PdVSA manage their interests in the two-phase Hamaca Project through the joint operating company Petrolera Ameriven. Of the Petrolera Ameriven members, only Texaco Inc. has partnered with USFilter in the past.

USFilter is a Vivendi Water company, the leading global provider of commercial, industrial, municipal and residential water and wastewater treatment systems, products and services, with operations in more than 100 countries. Together, Vivendi Water, Onyx (solid waste and industrial services), Dalkia (energy management), and Connex (transportation and logistics) comprise Vivendi Environnement, the largest environmental services company in the world with annual revenues of more than $23 billion. USFilter invites you to visit its web site at http://www.usfilter.com/.

Mr. Delatorre needs help with BOD removal:

I am looking for the most cost effective means of wastewater treatment for a corn steeping process that results in high levels of BOD/SS.  I would like a recommendation for a system to remove as much of the BOD/SS and best solution to dewatering the corn residues to about 15% solids content. If you need any further questions ,please email me.

Mr. Selvarajan needs help with activated sludge:

I am working for a leading dairy industry in Australia. We have an activated sludge waste water treatment plant on our site. After six months of continuous monitoring and having several problems with it, we are still not successful with it. We have a good increase in the total solids for some time and without any indication it foams like hell.

The whole area gets covered with smelly and slippery foam. As the waste is milk origin we get lots of fly problem as well. I would like someone to give me expert advice on how to effective manage the system.
