PCI-Water Uses New Membrane for UltraBar
------------------------------------------------------------

PCI-Water has selected a new vertical membrane for use in its
UltraBar Ultrafiltration unit. PCI-Water is to use a
Hydranautics low fouling polyethersulphone hollow fibre
membrane in all its new UltraBar installations.

The tubular, PVC housing comprises approximately 11,900 fibres,
each membrane fibre measuring 0.8mm internal diameter. The
membranes operate in direct flow mode, to optimize performance
at minimum energy consumption. The vertical membrane module
offers more flexibility with design and operation. PCI-Water's
stack designs allow easy access for maintenance, which can
be carried out in situ if required.

Water companies use the UltraBar ultrafiltration unit to
filter water, especially groundwater, to remove Cryptosporidium
and viruses to 5 log. The UltraBar system is listed by the
DWI as a product that complies with the Water Quality
Regulation for Cryptosporidium in Water Supplies. The unit
is capable of removing or retaining organisms greater than
one micron in diameter.

PCI-Water's first installation using this membrane has been
completed at Carradale Water Treatment Works in Scotland.
Carradale is a remote site on the Mull of Kintyre (West
of Scotland), treating a difficult groundwater source.

AWWA Endorses Blueprint for New Infrastructure Partnership
------------------------------------------------------------

Federal Commitment Critical to Meeting Nation's Infrastructure Needs

DENVER, Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Water Works
Association (AWWA) today urged Congress to pass a federal
assistance plan for regulatory compliance and replacement of
America's aging underground water pipes. AWWA made its
recommendations as part of the Water Infrastructure Network
(WIN), a consortium of municipal leaders, environmentalists
and the water profession.

"An investment in our nation's water infrastructure is an
investment in our public health," said AWWA Executive Director
Jack Hoffbuhr. "We must ensure that Congress' investment
will reach all of the communities in need of it."

AWWA has been working for more than two years to raise awareness
about the implications of the water infrastructure challenge
facing utilities, consumers and general public health. Part
of that work has involved producing a more detailed assessment
of the national situation and analyzing the obstacles currently
preventing utilities from making the necessary investments
on their own. Based upon this ongoing research, AWWA believes
an effective national water infrastructure program will
incorporate the following tenets:

-A strong commitment from the federal government to provide
ample new resources based on the reform and expansion of
existing federal programs.

-An agreement from states to match federal funds and
streamline delivery of them to utilities in need of them.

-Collaboration between local governments and utilities to
develop strategies aimed at improving utility asset management,
cost savings and rate evaluation.

The WIN proposal announced today is the most comprehensive
proposal for water infrastructure renewal across the nation.
Water experts and federal regulators agree that drinking water
and wastewater utilities must invest nearly $1 trillion for
treatment plants, distribution systems and wastewater collection
systems over the next 20 years. The competing needs of pipe
replacement and expensive treatment and technology upgrades
to ensure compliance with increasing federal regulations have
sapped the ability of utilities to fully investment in
infrastructure replacement, resulting in an investment short
coming of $23 billion every year. If utilities are required
to make up that shortcoming on their own, the WIN estimates
that water rates could double, or even triple, in some
communities, an increase which could make access to clean
drinking water unaffordable for some Americans. To stave
off such a crisis, the WIN today recommended the creation of
a five-year, $57 billion federal program to fill the
investment gap.

"The WIN proposal is a sensible place to start work on closing
the investment gap," concluded Hoffbuhr. "Equipping communities
with the resources to improve their water infrastructure
merits Congress' support and our collaboration."

The American Water Works Association and its 57,000 members
work to assure a safe, sufficient supply of drinking water
for the people of the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The group leads efforts to advance the science, technology,
consumer awareness, management, conservation, and government
policies related to drinking water.

Mr. Duffy needs to lower BOD in leachate:

We are remediating an old municipal solid waste landfill.
As part of that effort, we will install a perimeter leachate
collection system designed to discharge the leachate to the
local sanitary sewer. The leachate has been tested and the
only parameter of concern is a very high BOD (>10,000).

We need to reduce BOD by at least 50% prior to discharge at
the sewer. Maximum flow rate is 70 gpm (allowable sewer
discharge rate). We prefer an inexpensive, simple, easy
maintenance, mobile system since this is only a 4 year
project. Currently leaning towards a frac tank with coarse
bubbler unit in the bottom.

How big does tank have to be (i.e. how long of a retention
time at 70 gpm to reduce BOD 50%)? Any other ideas or
suggestions? Thanks ahead of time.

Daniel Duffy
