Conference on Pharmaceutical Chemicals in Water

WESTERVILLE, OH -- Hormones and drugs in drinking water supplies will be the focus of the 5th International Conference on Pharmaceuticals and Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals in Water being hosted in Costa Mesa (CA) March 13-15, 2006, at the Hilton Costa Mesa.

The conference is being conducted by the National Ground Water Association and is cosponsored by the U.S. Geological Survey Toxic Substances Hydrology Program, U.S. EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory, German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, Minnesota Department of Health, the Berlin Centre of Competence for Water, and the Technical University of Berlin.

The conference will examine:

Occurrences — The world's leading experts on monitoring water supplies will present data showing the presence of dozens of drugs and hormones in streams, rivers, and ground water throughout the United States and Europe. The data include important new findings showing population declines in certain bird species due to exposure to diclofenac—a common antiinflammatory.

Drug-resistant bacteria — The news media has reported widely on the creation of "superbugs," new strains of bacteria that have evolved and are resistant to antibiotics. Some of these have been detected in water resources near major cities and in rural areas.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals and wildlife — Evidence will be presented regarding the harmful effects on wildlife from exposure to natural and synthetic hormones, and certain other EDCs.

Risk management and treatment technologies for pharmaceuticals and EDCs — Risk management tools and the need for their further development to address pharmaceuticals and EDCs will be spotlighted.

VSEP Membrane Filtration for Clean Coal

Emeryville, CA -- New Logic Research, Inc., the maker of VSEP, a vibratory membrane filtration system, announced today the commissioning of a VSEP system to recycle process water at the KFx K-Fuel™ plant outside Gillette, Wyoming.

The VSEP system, which employs reverse osmosis membranes, is fed process water used in the K-Fuel™ processor. The VSEP product water (permeate) is cleaned to such a purity level that it can be reused as the plant’s boiler feed water to make process steam.

“We are very excited to be a part of KFx’s vision for the future of coal power,” said New Logic CEO Greg Johnson. “The integration of VSEP into the K-Fuel™ process represents the joining of two truly unique, environmentally friendly technologies.”

In evaluating the process options for water recycling at the plant, KFx considered numerous technologies including traditional filtration methods followed by spiral-wound reverse osmosis membrane modules. In the final analysis, however, KFx determined that the VSEP system was the best solution that could provide the necessary water in one step; thus eliminating the need for expensive pretreatment and chemical usage.

“As a commercial specialist in applying proven water filtration technologies in unique operating environments, New Logic Research was an ideal choice for our first K-Fuel™ processing plant,” said Ted Venners, KFx’s Chairman and Chief Technology Officer. “KFx is committed to operating facilities that ensure safe, efficient, production of cleaner coal, supported by environmentally friendly processes. New Logic understood and delivered consistent with this objective.”

According to New Logic CTO Dr. Brad Culkin, “For nearly 20 years, New Logic has worked with cutting edge companies like KFx to enable innovative energy processes in industries such as oil sands, ethanol and biodiesel. We’re proud to be an integral part of the KFx K-Fuel™ process, and we look forward to supporting their water needs in the future.”

The KFx plant outside Gillette, Wyoming is the first full-scale commercial K-Fuel™ plant, and will produce 750,000 tons of low-emissions, high BTU coal per year. Two additional sites in Wyoming have already been announced, which will produce 4 million and 8 million tons of K-Fuel™ per year respectively.

B&V to Provide Consulting Services for Baghdad

London, England -- Black & Veatch, a global engineering, construction and consulting company, announced that it has been selected to review the physical condition and hydraulic adequacy of the water supply system in Baghdad, Iraq. As part of its review, the company will recommend solutions to restore the water supply system to full working order with consequent improvements in health and living conditions in the Iraqi capital.

Black & Veatch was awarded the contract following international competitive bidding based upon both technical and financial proposals. The company's previous success in designing and supervising the construction of facilities in the country also was considered by the Mayoralty of Baghdad in awarding this contract.

Mike Johnson, Black & Veatch project manager, said, "By applying our global resources and drawing from our experience on projects in Iraq and many countries around the world, we can design and implement a solution to provide a safe, reliable and efficient water supply well into the future."

Black & Veatch will be working in close collaboration with the Technical Mayor of Baghdad together with his project management team to improve the quality of life in the area. The report is to be submitted within five months, enabling a start to be made on construction in the near future.

"We are very satisfied that we are able to work with a reputable international company that has the experience to help us carry out this important work," said the Technical Mayor of Baghdad.

The Mayoralty of Baghdad is aiming to rehabilitate, upgrade and extend plants at Al-Karkh, Al-Rasheed, Abu Nuwas and Sharq Dijla, as well as the cross-river link that delivers water to the Rassafa (East side) of the River Tigris.

The main Treatment Works at Al-Karkh is one of the largest water treatment works in the world with a capacity 1,365 Mega liters per day (ML/d). During the past 15 years, the treatment process has depended on locally obtained chemicals that have a very high percentage of impurities, resulting in damage to the infrastructure of the facility and many parts of the system have suffered badly from looting over the past 18 months.

The project is part of a $65M World Bank Trust Fund loan aimed at improving economic conditions and increasing the quantity, quality and availability of potable water in Baghdad.

Ms. Phelps wants to know about DO readings:

We have a 15,000 gal package plant, just got a DO probe, and am getting readings of 6 to 8 in the aerated grit chamber, 1 or less in aeration chamber and this morning 2.79 in clarifier.

Any suggestions as to what is causing this?  Also, have timer set for as much run time as possible, any more and it will be beating the floc to death.
