Awwa Research Foundation Providing Science for the Arsenic Standard

Water Supply Community Proactively Addresses Arsenic in Drinking Water
DENVER, Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency yesterday set a new 10-parts-per-billion standard
for arsenic in drinking water. Nine million dollars of research
sponsored by the Awwa Research Foundation (AwwaRF) and the
Arsenic Research Partnership underpins this standard. This
research has provided scientific data for use in making policy
and balancing costs and public health benefits. Congress and
local water utilities funded this research through AwwaRF and
the Association of California Water Agencies.
"The water supply community has been proactive in sponsoring
extensive research to address issues and concerns over arsenic
in drinking water," said AwwaRF executive director James Manwaring.
"Research efforts will continue over the next few years. Some
of the key scientific, health effects, and implementation issues
are still unresolved."
A summary of AwwaRF's arsenic projects is available at the foundation's
web site (http://www.awwarf.com/research/arsenic.htm). Seven
reports on arsenic research are currently available from the
foundation. AwwaRF expects to publish six more reports in 2001.
The available reports cover key issues such as costs of compliance,
the state of the science, human health risks, and treatment
technologies.
"Cost Implications of a Lower Arsenic MCL" estimates the national
cost of compliance for the new standard at $590 million annually
with capital costs of $4.5 billion.
"Arsenic: Answers to Questions Commonly Asked by Drinking Water
Professionals" provides a clear, concise summary of arsenic issues
and the state of the science.
"Feasibility of New Epidemiological Studies of Low Level Arsenic"
presents approaches for evaluating human health risks.
"Arsenic Treatability Options and Evaluation of Residuals Management
Issues" evaluates conventional and advanced treatment technologies
for removal of arsenic.
The American Water Works Association Research Foundation (AwwaRF)
is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the science of
water. The foundation sponsors practical, applied research for the
drinking water community. Since 1983, AwwaRF has managed research
projects worth more than $188 million.
The Arsenic Research Partnership was formed in June 1996 by the Awwa
Research Foundation, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and
the Association of California Water Agencies to increase the
understanding of the health effects of arsenic at low levels in
drinking water.

First Contract For UVSwift Drinking Water Disinfection System
------------------------------------------------------------
LONDON, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 16, 2001--Trojan
Technologies Inc. (TSE:TUV.) announced today that the Company
has been awarded its first contract to supply the Trojan
UVSwift(TM) Municipal Drinking Water Disinfection System.
The contract, for two ultraviolet (UV) disinfection units, was
awarded by the Town of Ontario, New York.
The systems will disinfect drinking water supplied to a service
area of approximately 30,000 people. The two Trojan UVSwift(TM)
units have been designed to be installed in an existing drinking
water facility in order to implement a multi-barrier disinfection
strategy, combining UV technology with traditional chemical
disinfection.
Bob Wykle, Water Utilities Superintendent for the Town of Ontario,
New York said: "We've had a very successful working relationship
with Trojan for a number of years. We selected the Trojan
UVSwift(TM) technology because we believe that Trojan has
developed the most advanced and reliable system available in
the market today."
"We're very pleased to have received the award for this drinking
water system because it demonstrates the role of Trojan's
UVSwift(TM) product line in supporting smaller communities'
implementation of a multi-barrier disinfection strategy. Through
the addition of UV disinfection, they can protect their
residents from a complete range of pathogens for less than
US$100,000." said Marvin DeVries, Chief Operating Officer.
"The flexibility of the Trojan UVSwift(TM) system enables
it to be designed to effectively treat drinking water for
large municipalities as well."
Since the product launch in June 2000, Trojan has submitted
initial quotations on more than $100 million worth of projects
for the disinfection of municipal drinking water supplies
globally. Municipal demonstration systems have been installed
at treatment sites in both North America, (including a trial
in the community of North Bay, Ontario) and in Europe.
Trojan Technologies is a Canadian based, high technology
environmental company operating internationally. With more
than 20 years of experience, Trojan has the largest installed
base of UV disinfection systems operating around the world.
Trojan designs, manufactures and sells ultraviolet disinfection
systems for municipal wastewater, drinking water systems
for residential, municipal and commercial use, and industrial
systems for food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and
semiconductor applications.

Mr. Chamberlain wants info Chlorine Gas
I would first like to know how many sanitary departments around
the country use chlorine gas as a disinfectant. Second I would
like to know who supplies this gas currently. Lastly I would
like to know how much is utilized and for how much. Any portion
of the above requested would be helpful. We waste many pounds
of chlorine gas daily in our purification processes, which is
then scrubbed and disposed. We may be able to offer low grade,
low cost chlorine gas by recycling our waste.

Call For Photographs!

This week's photo is of a 24-inch-in-diameter Slurrycup grit
classifier with a one-cubic-yard Grit Snail dewatering unit,
located at the Florence, Oregon WWTP. Eutek® Systems, Inc.
meets the challenges of separating and classifying grit as
small as 50 micron (270 mesh), while providing secondary
washing to minimize organic content. The 'all hydraulic'
Slurrycup has no internal moving parts, increasing operating
reliability. Applications include grit washing, snail shell
removal, and primary sludge degritting.
