Small Communities Face New Arsenic Standards

USFilter & Culligan Offer Flexibility and Cost-effective Solutions for Arsenic Removal

PALM DESERT, Calif. – The new arsenic standard announced October 31 by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has communities and consumers alike turning to water treatment experts for guidance and technology options.

The new standard, which the EPA estimates will cost local communities $200 million annually, will reduce the maximum amount of arsenic allowed in drinking water from 50 parts per billion to 10 parts per billion by 2006.

Water quality associations, government agencies, and water companies such as California-based USFilter, and have been working to educate communities about proven and cost-effective arsenic removal methods.

“Already stressed community drinking water systems and budgets will be impacted over the next several years. So, it is even more critical to provide the affected communities with a variety of technologies and services--from wellhead arsenic removal systems to microfiltration or reverse osmosis to point-of-use or point-of-entry systems for household and commercial use,” said Andrew Seidel, president and CEO of USFilter.

Responding to requests from municipalities and consumers, USFilter and Culligan have entered into an exclusive marketing agreement with GEH Wasserchemie GmbH of Germany to market Granular Ferric Hydroxide (GFH™) media. The GFH media removes arsenic (III), arsenic (V), chromium, lead and uranium. The GFH media has been used in Europe for many years to help municipalities meet the World Health Organization standard of 10 micrograms per liter.

The media will be used in community water treatment plants and within Culligan brand point-of-use and point-of-entry systems. Through point-of-use systems, consumers in affected areas also can take control of their drinking water quality. These under-the-sink systems use membrane technology to reduce arsenic levels, plus other contaminants such as nitrate/nitrite, lead and Cryptosporidium and Giardia cysts.

USFilter will also provide wellhead arsenic removal systems by installing the GFH media in pressure vessels. To ensure system integrity, USFilter will use its nationwide service network to provide cost-effective maintenance contracts that include water analysis, media removal, disposal and replacement.

Technologists from USFilter’s North American Technology Center are collaborating on various arsenic research projects sponsored by the American Water Works Association, the EPA and the Association of California Water Agencies.

Dr. Paul Gallagher, director of process development at USFilter, explains, “The selection of technology to apply is influenced by many factors including the nature of the arsenic species, arsenic concentration, presence and concentration of additional contaminants, site flow rate and water source.”

USFilter offers many other technologies and process routes to help municipalities reduce arsenic levels in their drinking water supplies. Some of these technologies include Memcor coagulation-assisted Microfiltration using and Microfloc pre-engineered adsorption clarifiers, along with reverse osmosis, ion exchange and lime softening.

Arsenic is a naturally occurring element that enters water supplies through either natural deposition or agriculture and industrial pollution. According to the EPA, health effects related to arsenic include cardiovascular problems, diabetes, and increased risk of various cancers.

The new standard is estimated by the EPA to impact one in 20 or about 4,000 community water systems nationwide. Nearly 97 percent of those are small systems serving communities of fewer than 10,000 people.

Culligan manufactures and distributes water treatment products for retail, household, commercial systems and bottled water. Culligan, a subsidiary of USFilter, is among the most widely recognized brand names in America, having been in business since 1936.

USFilter is a Vivendi Water company, the leading global provider of commercial, industrial, municipal and residential water and wastewater treatment systems, products and services, with operations in more than 100 countries. Together, Vivendi Water, Onyx (solid waste and industrial services), Dalkia (energy management), and Connex (transportation and logistics) comprise Vivendi Environnement (NYSE:VE), the largest environmental services company in the world with annual revenues of more than $23 billion.

Radioactive Water

Perma-Fix Contracted for Treatment of WW From Rocky Flats

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Perma-Fix Environmental Services, Inc. has announced that it has been awarded a $6.7 million multi- year contract by Kaiser-Hill Company, LLC for the transportation and treatment of aqueous wastes generated at the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site in Golden, Colorado (http://www.rfets.gov/).

The contract, which is estimated to be worth approximately $6.7 million, is to start immediately and is projected to continue through 2005. The nuclear industry (Department of Energy ("DOE"), nuclear utilities, institutions) generates large quantities of radioactive water that must be treated to remove radioactivity. Perma-Fix has developed and installed water treatment technologies at its facilities that can treat not only radioactive water but also radioactive water that is chemically hazardous.

Dr. Louis F. Centofanti, Perma-Fix president and chief executive officer, said, "This contract is important to assist the DOE with the cleanup of sites throughout the United States to ensure that the public's health and safety is protected, and that the resources from these sites can be used for future purposes. The contract is also the first for Perma-Fix's new water treatment process for aqueous mixed waste, which was recently completed at its mixed waste treatment facilities."

Kaiser-Hill Company, LLC, is the management and integration contractor operating the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site, which was once a significant portion of the DOE's nuclear weapons production complex. The DOE awarded Kaiser-Hill a first-of-its-kind closure contract in January 2000 to safely complete cleanup and closure of Rocky Flats by December 2006, for a cost of nearly $4 billion. The site mission includes special nuclear material management and shipment, nuclear deactivation and decommissioning, waste management and shipment, environmental cleanup and site closure.

Perma-Fix Environmental Services, Inc. is a national environmental services company, providing unique mixed waste and industrial waste management services. The industrial services segment provides hazardous and non- hazardous waste treatment services for a diverse group of customers including Fortune 500 companies, numerous federal, state and local agencies and thousands of smaller clients. The nuclear services segment provides radioactive and mixed waste treatment services to hospitals, research laboratories and institutions, numerous federal agencies including the Departments of Energy and Defense and nuclear utilities. The company operates 10 major waste treatment facilities across the country.

Perma-Fix has recently increased its capabilities to treat mixed waste by expanding the services offered at existing facilities as well acquiring and building new facilities in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The newest facility is located on the Department of Energy East Tennessee Technology Park (formerly the K-25 plant) which was one of the key facilities involved with constructing nuclear weapons under the Manhattan Project. This facility was designed and constructed specifically to treat the large volumes of wastes generated by the DOE since the 1940's.

Modular Design

WW Treatment Systems to Combat Threat to World's Oceans

FT. LAUDERDALE- In response to regulatory pressures, Marine Environmental Partners, Inc., has taken a leading role in providing innovative technologies to combat pollution associated with the maritime shipping industry. This week, MEP executives announced the development of two new treatment processes to deal with shipboard generated black (sewage) and grey (laundry, kitchen, and sink/shower), wastewater and a simple and highly effective process for eliminating biota in ship's ballast water. The ballast water crisis has been identified as "one of the four greatest threats to the world's oceans" by the International Maritime Organization.

Designed with non-chemical and non-membrane components, the new systems utilize patented EIMS (electro-ionization magnetic separation) technology as its core, allowing MEP to provide solutions for a multitude of waste streams in compact, fully automated, and extremely low maintenance systems ideally suited for shipboard use. Shipboard demonstrations of both systems are set to take place during the first quarter of 2002.

"The modular design of MEP's systems makes them highly adaptable" says Jon Stewart, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for the Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. based company. "Our systems can be configured to incorporate varying components to deal with a full spectrum of waste water concerns, including particulates, sludges and complex chemistries associated with shipboard wastewater. Our approach focuses on process solutions, allowing us the flexibility to meet any customer's specific needs" adds Mr. Stewart.

"Our engineering and manufacturing teams are ready to meet the demand of a market sorely in need of simple, cost effective solutions." Added C.E."Bud" Leffler, the company's President & CEO. "We have great confidence that MEP will be a key player in providing a response to these pressing environmental issues."

Information about MEP is available at 954-924-5500.

Ceren needs help with biological aeration:

My problem is, I have visited many treatment plants and seen that the pH at the effluent is higher than the pH at the beginning at the biological aeration tanks. what is the reason for that increase?

Mr. Manfredi needs low cost water purification:

Need any help we can get on feasible, low cost, preferably build yourself filters for treating water for giardia, other cystics, protozoa, etc.  Local water in Honduras is non-potable and many suffer health problems because of this.

Water source is reservoir impoundment for hydro-electric generation, most homes that have water piped have low pressure one to two hours per day.  Many more have to haul water to homes from community taps.

We need simply built, ultra low cost solutions here!  Average monthly income of these people is $75 to $150 dollars (US) per month and that is for a normal family of four.

Nothing fancy necessary, just the necessary level to ensure against the nasty buggies, intestinal parasites etc.
