Fortune Magazine

CH2M HILL Selected - '100 Best Companies to Work For'

DENVER, Jan. 7 -- CH2M HILL has been named by Fortune magazine as one of America's top employers in 2002. Among the more than 1,000 firms nationwide that were considered, CH2M HILL was the only Colorado- based company and the only engineering firm to make the list.

The publication's annual ranking of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" is determined through an extensive nomination and application process. Two- thirds of the score is based on how randomly selected employees respond to the Great Place to Work Trust Index, a survey instrument measuring the quality of workplace culture.

"As CH2M HILL has grown, the company has expanded its efforts to maintain its standing among employees and potential recruits as a great place to work," said Ralph Peterson, CH2M HILL chairman, president and CEO. "This recognition by Fortune is a positive reflection of these efforts, and we are extremely proud to be among the best places to work in America.

"For 57 years, CH2M HILL has worked hard to distinguish itself, not just as one of the nation's leading infrastructure design and project delivery companies, but as a respectful, wholesome and nurturing place to work. From its earliest days, the founders of the company sought fair and honorable ways to build the business and share the rewards of success with employees."

CH2M HILL was selected, in part, due to its competitive compensation and benefits packages, system of open and accessible communications practices, ownership culture, learning and development opportunities, and work-life balance programs for employees.

Responses to the firm's most recent annual employee survey showed a growing sense of purpose, community and self-worth. A full 85 percent of employees who responded to the survey indicated that they are treated fairly by the company, and nearly eight out of ten (77.6 percent) feel that CH2M HILL gives ample consideration to the demands on their personal lives.

CH2M HILL is an employee-owned, global firm providing engineering, construction, operations, and related technical services to public and private clients in numerous industries. The firm's work is concentrated in the areas of energy, environment, water, transportation, telecommunications, construction, and industrial facilities. Headquartered in Denver, CH2M HILL has more than 10,500 employees working in 165 offices worldwide where respect for the environment is reflected in safe, innovative and environmentally sound work practices.

Keeps Receiving Areas Clean

New Automated Septage Receiving Station

Management at the Ventura, CA Regional Sanitation District has put an end to rag-generated clogging of pumps and pipes through the installation of a Honey Monster septage receiving system. The high-tech Honey Monster from JWC Environmental helps to make Honey truck receiving areas clean, sanitary and efficient.

The Honey Monster is an easy-to-install modular system that removes inorganic solids from wastewater, washes and dewaters the solids and decreases volume by grinding them up. Rags, plastics, sticks & other solids are quickly shredded by the powerful Muffin Monster grinder. This protects pumps and prevents clogging.

"Rags tended to find each other and form ropy, knotty masses we called 'mopheads', which added significantly to our maintenance burden by clogging pumps and pipes, and building up in tank bottoms," said Ken Rock, Director of Water and Wastewater for the Ventura, CA district.

Sewage flow from a Honey truck first travels to a Muffin Monster grinder that reduces solids to tiny particles. Then the flow enters a stainless steel tank where an Auger Monster screens out inorganic solids, washes fecal matter back into the waste stream, dewaters the solids and dumps them in a bin. The processed liquid waste is then sent to the treatment plant.

The system results in lighter and drier dumpster waste that has fewer odors and is cheaper to landfill. The fully automated system can unload a truck in 5-15 minutes and requires no plant personnel to operate. The optional card reader system allows a plant to control access, meter flow and generate billing. This is a popular option for plants with low staffing levels and lots of Honey truck traffic.

September in Beijing, China

Water China 2003

Beijing, China -- Your organization is cordially invited to exhibit at Water China 2003 that will be held at China National Agricultural Exhibition Center, Beijing, China, September 16-19, 2003.

Why Water China 2003?

Extensive Support from the government departments: Water China has for years received extensive support from our sponsors, the central ministries of China that are in charge of, among many activities, environmental protection (State Environment Protection Administration, China-SEPA), city construction (Ministry of Construction, China-MC) and international cooperation on science and technology (Ministry of Science and Technology, China-MOST), who have also helped bring quality visitors to the show;

Focusing exclusively on Water & Wastewater:

Water China, unlike other shows in China that usually involve other sectors of environment, focuses on Water and Wastewater exclusively, bringing real professionals to the exhibitors

A well established international event:

Water China, held in the Chinese capital annually since 1998, has grown to be the most influential trade show on water and wastewater. It is well-known not only in China, but in many other parts of the world. Over 300 exhibitors have represented over 10 countries and regions, including Australia, Austria, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Singapore, Sweden and USA. Attendees have come from 25 of China's 31 provinces, HKSAR and Taiwan, plus over 10 counties in different parts of the globe;

Huge market potential:

The world's biggest developing country who imposes increasing importance on water and wastewater, China has huge market potentials. Take sewage treatment for instance. About 3.7 billion tons of sewage is produced in cities across the country each day. Even if 50 per cent of the wastewater were treated, then 10,000 sewage treatment plants would be needed, representing a market value of US $48.4 billion;

An aggressive year-round marketing campaign:

Show listings, editorial coverage, and advertisements in core market trade magazines, websites and newspapers, plus direct mails and emails will make Water China 2003 known to a minimum of 1,000,000 readers worldwide.

People post their requests for help and offer their suggestions to others in our open forum.

Mr. ReNeil wants to more about concrete tanks:

Who sets the standards for underground wastewater treatment tanks in regards to thickness, waterproofing, etc?  Is there an overall governing body at work or is it related directly to the city, county, or state.

I have received many different responses and am wondering what determines the jurisdiction they fall under.  (Click here to post a reply)

Mr. Dave needs help with excess flocculent measurement:

We are using Poly Acryl Amide flocculent [MW  10 to 15 Million] for removing suspended solids from process water. Can any one tell, any possibility of carry over of excess\unused polymer with clarifier overflow water and if yes, how to detect it?

At present,  a crude method like Jar Test of effluent with clarified water is done, gives some hint, but not much reliable.  Excess flocculent dosing is not only costly but may create problem when clarified water is recycled in system.
