Visiting
5 US Cities
Water Monitoring
Equipment Will be Focus of Chinese Delegation’s Visit to U.S.
Washington, DC - 7 January 2002 -- A
delegation of senior representatives from Chinese environmental
agencies will visit five U.S. cities January 22-February 2 to meet
with American suppliers of water monitoring equipment. The
orientation visit is being organized by the U.S. Trade and
Development Agency (TDA).
In
conjunction with the visit, TDA will hold briefings for U.S.
companies in Washington, D.C. and Denver, CO. The briefings will
enable companies to learn about China’s plans to set up 60 new
automatic on-line water quality monitoring stations on key sections
of national rivers and basins within the next five years. The
Chinese also will discuss stations planned by provincial and local
governments. Each new on-line monitoring station represents
approximately $180,000 in export potential for U.S. companies.
According to Geoff Jackson, TDA’s
Regional Director for Asia, "the briefings will provide an
outstanding opportunity for U.S. companies to learn about current
water quality monitoring project needs in China." Briefing
participants will also have opportunities to discuss their products
and services directly with the Chinese officials in prescheduled,
one-on-one meetings.
The 11-member delegation will be
headed by the Deputy Director for Planning of the China State
Environmental Protection Administration, Wang Yuongjian. Other stops
will include New Orleans, LA; Lincoln, NE; and the American Water
Works Association/Water Environment Federation 2002 Water Sources
Conference in Las Vegas. The U.S. visit is supported, in part, by
the United States – China Business Council.
The Washington briefing is scheduled
to take place from 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., January 24, at the J.W.
Marriott Hotel. The $40 registration fee includes breakfast, lunch
and briefing materials. The Denver briefing is scheduled for 3:00
p.m. to 6:00 p.m., January 31, at the U.S. Export Assistance Center.
Advance registration is requested for
both briefings. For registration or sponsorship information, go to www.trademeetings.com
or contact Pam Peseux at telephone 1-202-347-2725. Email: tda@mfmgroup.com.
The U.S. Trade and Development Agency
helps form mutually beneficial partnerships between U.S.
private-sector companies and overseas sponsors. An agency of the
U.S. government, TDA provides assistance in more than 60 nations
around the world each year.
Inmates
Plugging Pumps
Super Shredder - Just What The Warden
Ordered
Livingston, NJ -- Inmates in
correctional institutions have found a new pastime. By flushing
oversized items down their toilets they either accidentally or
deliberately cause the facility's wastewater to back up. Often the
goal is to gain extra time out of the cell. By flooding their cell
or cell block, they force the facility to move them during the
cleanup period. These misdeeds have often been rewarding ....that is
up until now!
Case History
A
women's correctional institution had a major problem with plugging
of pumps and plumbing systems. Inmates were flushing every
conceivable item into the sewage system including tampons, aluminum
cans, pillow cases, pants, full blankets, and bed sheets. The result
was repeated sewage backup and flooding.
The pumps would become so jammed that
it would be necessary to dismantle them to clear them - a time
consuming and grueling job. Often the pump's bearings and seals
would become damaged and have to be replaced.. The pump downtime
would last between a few hours and a few days. In the meantime,
sewage would back up into the inmate's cells requiring their
relocation. This would only encourage a repeat performance. The
situation called for an urgent solution. That's when the maintenance
personnel turned to Franklin Miller for help.
A Model SS1200 Super Shredder was
selected and installed on the suction side of the pump. With its 12
inch flanges and a 10 HP direct coupled gear drive the Super
Shredder was a perfect match to the system's capacity requirements.
The unit, with a straight thru flanged design, was easy to connect,
much like an ordinary valve.
The results were immediate. The pumps
were no longer subject to frequent jamming. In fact, there hasn't
been any pump ragging or backup since installation. As a bonus,
major pump components such as impeller, seals and bearings have
lasted much longer as well. The inmates have had to resign
themselves to their cells and their normal daily routine.
To quote the maintenance supervisor,
"We depend on the Super Shredder for our system operation.
Without it our system would be down in a matter of hours, so we just
can't be without it."

Heavy Steel Jibs and Lifting Systems
Are Obsolete!
Fort Erie, Ontario - The need for
lightweight, portable and cost effective maintenance lifting
equipment for water and wastewater facilities has been met by the
introduction of lightweight and portable aluminum alloy jib and
gantry cranes from Reid Lifting Equipment Inc.
The
Porta-Davit 500 is a lightweight and portable jib crane that has an
1,100 lb. (0.5 ton) lifting capacity but only weighs 48 lbs.
assembled. The Model 500 comes complete with a heavy-duty carrying
bag and can be easily transported in a compact car or truck. The
simple 2 piece design enhances operator safety , improves
operational efficiency and reduces equipment costs. Equipment cost
savings over traditional lifting equipment can be as great as 80%.
Due to its portability the Porta-Davit
500 can service an entire facility and remote locations. No longer
does each pump site require its own jib or overhead beam. To add
sites all that is required are additional sockets. Sockets are
available in galvanized steel or 316 stainless steel. Socket designs
include flush mount, side mount and top mount sockets. Socket
placement is enhanced by the three radius adjustments. Shock
load forces, encountered when lifting or lowering pumps, is easily
handled by the shock resistant strap that is designed to stretch
when subjected to significant shock forces.
REID Lifting Limited is the primary
supplier of lifting equipment to the major water and wastewater
companies in England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and France. REID
currently sells its products in over 12 countries on 3 continents.

Treatment
of Oily Wastewater
EcoloCycle Purchases
Earth's Torr Technology
MONTREAL--Jan. 9, 2002--EARTH
(Canada) Corporation (Environmental Applied Research Technology
House) is pleased to announce EcoloCycle Inc. is purchasing Earth's
Torr System to treat industrial oily wastewater in their new
treatment plant located at their headquarters in St. Hyacinthe,
Quebec.
EcoloCycle co-founder, Michel Dozois
comments, "Our company's business is to collect and treat oily
waste. This oily waste contains water and only Earth's Torr system
allows us to clean it effectively and recover both the oil &
water. We are now able to offer a unique solution to our
customers."
This order by EcoloCycle serves as a
model for remediation companies elsewhere. Due to ever more
stringent regulations, the need to treat industrially generated oily
wastewater in an effective and environmentally friendly is a
priority worldwide.
Earth president & CEO, Edward
Akkawi comments, "The experts in the industry, consultants and
service providers, are recognizing the benefits of TORR as an
efficient and economically attractive technology which better meets
the needs of their customers and their bottom-line". He
continues, "It is our belief our technology will stand out in
this changing and fast growing marketplace."
People post their requests for help and offer their
suggestions to others in our open forum.
Mr. Zook needs a plant to treat
oily wastes:
I'm looking for suggestions on
building a large system to treat oil and grease waste (from
restaurant grease traps). Currently there is only one landfill
(40 miles away) that accepts such waste. If our POTW had a way
to treat it, waste haulers could dispose of it here. This
would also hopefully make it easier and more cost effective for
restaurants to clean out their grease traps and ultimately protect
our collection systems/environment.
Hi, I'm new to this board. I work for
a municipality in Northern California and I'd like to know where I
can find domestic water well specifications? I am particularly
interested in 500' depth with 10"-12" casings. Would
anyone have similar specs they would be willing to share with me?
