GZA GeoEnvironmental 'Goes Private' Purchased by Employees
------------------------------------------------------------
NORWOOD, Mass., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- A leading regional
geotechnical and environmental consulting firm has taken the
unusual and dramatic step of "privatizing."
Until recently, a number of the publicly-traded GZA's senior
staff were simply employees. Now, they have purchased 100%
of the shares of the company to become sole owners of the firm,
thereby achieving a goal that is successfully accomplished by
only 20% of those who attempt it.
Following a December 21, 2000 stockholder vote, GZA GeoEnvironmental
Technologies, Inc. has gone from being a publicly-traded (NASDAQ)
company to a private, employee-owned enterprise. The company,
which posted $76 million in sales for 2000 and expects revenues
exceeding $80 million in 2001, employs 450 and maintains 18
offices throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, Michigan,
New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont,
Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. In the same week, the firm
relocated its corporate headquarters from Newton, MA to an
expanded 52,000 square foot facility in Norwood, MA. At the
same time, the firm doubled the size of its laboratory space
with a new 12,000 square foot facility in Hopkinton, MA.
New CEO William R. Beloff, a 26-year GZA veteran who has seen
the company run as both a public and a private entity, said
that he and the other new owners are very enthused about the
transition, and their firm's future. "We recognized both the
value and the potential of GZA, and believe that private
ownership will better enable us to meet our goals of retaining
senior staff, expanding our services and increasing client
satisfaction."
He continued, "As a publicly held entity, our first obligation
was to our stockholders. Yet, many of GZA's employees have
fueled the success of the firm, and we can now reward them more
appropriately for their efforts." He added, "We entered this
arrangement with the strong support of our clients, and our
management staff. And, we have purchased a very financially
healthy company. Last year's revenues were the firm's strongest
in its history, and during the last four year period, each
year showed an increase in profitability."
Beloff said that the firm has a number of specific plans for
expansion, both short and long-term and that the privatization
of the company will allow for increased emphasis on and success
for growth. The initial agreement to purchase outstanding stock
was signed in August 2000. The conversion to private ownership
was accomplished through a merger with GeoEnvironmental
Acquisition, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Futureco
Environmental, Inc., the privately-held firm organized by the
GZA senior management team which led the transition effort.
On December 28, 2000, all outstanding shares of GZA's common
stock not already affiliated with Futureco were acquired.
Funding for the $29.6 million merger was provided by Key Bank
National Association of Portland, ME. Tucker Anthony Capital
Markets of Boston, MA provided financial advisory services to
the management team and assisted in securing the financing.
GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. is a full-service, leading
multidisciplinary environmental firm providing environmental
consulting, geotechnical and civil engineering, environmental
remediation contracting, regulatory compliance, solid waste
services, specialty construction and site development services.
GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., maintains corporate offices at One
Edgewater Drive, Norwood, MA 02062. The firm has 450 employees
and operates 18 offices throughout primarily the Northeast,
Mid- Atlantic and Great Lakes Regions of the United States.

Envirogen Announces New Perchlorate Treatment System Order
------------------------------------------------------------
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J., Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Envirogen, Inc.
(Nasdaq: ENVG) announced that it has been awarded a contract
to supply the U.S. Army with a Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR)
system. The system will be used to treat groundwater containing
the chemical perchlorate at the Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant
(LHAAP) in Karnack, Texas. The contract is administered by
the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Tulsa District and funded
by the U.S. Army's Operations Support Command (OSC).
The contract calls for Envirogen to design, build, supervise
installation and start up an FBR in conjunction with the
groundwater treatment plant at the site. The system will
be installed in the first quarter of 2001, two years ahead of
the agreed schedule between the Army and TNRCC. Envirogen's
proprietary FBR technology utilizes microorganisms attached
to fluidized inert media within columnar reactors to degrade
contaminants as groundwater is pumped through the system.
Perchlorate, a solid rocket fuel ingredient, is an important
chemical within the defense industry. Perchlorate was first
identified as a groundwater issue in early 1997 when it was
detected in wells near plant facilities where the compound was
manufactured or used. Biological treatment is the most cost-
effective technology for treating groundwater containing
perchlorate.
Envirogen's full range of microbial and process engineering
expertise enabled the Company to offer a timely, cost-effective
solution to the perchlorate problem. Other common groundwater
contaminants for which FBR systems offer cost-effective
solutions include benzene, toluene, nitrobenzene, aniline and
gasoline oxygenates. As compared to alternative treatment
methods, Envirogen's FBR systems offer lower operating costs
with high treatment efficiencies and consistent operation with
variable feed.
Envirogen is a broad-based environmental systems and services
company providing its customers with the maximum benefit per
dollar spent for environmental protection. Through the
application of its industry leading technologies, Envirogen
provides cost-effective means to remove pollution from
the air, water and soil.

NVID Int. Announces Axenohl Municipal Water Tests Results
------------------------------------------------------------
Ionic Silver Technology Found Safe and Effective
CLEARWATER, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 2001--NVID
International Inc. (Pink Sheets:NVID) announced Monday the
final results of a research project focused on the effectiveness
of Axenohl in a municipal drinking water system in Costa Rica,
featuring NVID's ionic silver-based microbial technology.
The 4-month study was conducted in the municipal water system
of Grecia, a community of 60,000 people just west of San Jose,
Costa Rica. EPA protocols were followed in the study and all
testing was performed as described in the Standard Methods
for the Examination of Water and Waste Water, 19th Edition,
1995. The objective of the study was to determine the
effectiveness of Axenohl as a disinfecting agent in municipal
water system applications.
Prior to testing, the Grecia water supply was contaminated
with coliform bacteria and was not potable. After treatment
with 78 parts-per-billion (PPB) of Axenohl concentrate, the
fecal coliforms went from greater than 200 CFU/100ml to
zero in a period of 10 days. No other disinfectants or
chemicals (including chlorine) were used in conjunction
with Axenohl during the testing period. All water samples
taken downstream had less than 50 PPB Axenohl, which falls
within the current EPA and European water treatment guidelines
for the presence of silver. Additionally, Axenohl proved to
control and reduce the presence and growth of biofilm in
the piping distribution network. The community of Grecia
intends to continue the usage of Axenohl in its water supply
network.
The data from this study will be submitted to JAMA (Journal
of the American Medical Association) and WHO (World Health
Organization) for peer review, and ultimately White Paper
publication. The project demonstrates the effectiveness and
potential of Axenohl as a replacement for traditional water
treatment agents.
Under a license agreement from NVID, Innovative Medical
Services (Nasdaq:PURE) and Sistecam S.A. teamed together
under the direction of Andrew Arata, inventor of record
for Axenohl, to implement the costly and time consuming
Grecia drinking water project in Costa Rica.
"The Grecia test results are one more example that prove
NVID's aqueous antimicrobial ionic silver technology can
realistically be viewed as a breakthrough disinfectant,"
stated David J. Larson, president NVID International.
"Axenohl can effectively compete with traditional water
treatment disinfectants without creating any known
disinfection by-products, such as trihalomethanes (THM),
which have been proven to be carcinogenic."
Axenohl is NVID's non-toxic antibacterial technology that
uses the biocidal properties of stabilized ionic silver to
kill bacteria, viruses and fungi. Axenohl does not include
the use of traditional disinfectants such as quaternary
ammonium salts, phenols, glutaraldehyde, chlorine or
bromine compounds. The Axenohl formulations have been
designed to compete, and/or replace these products while
eliminating the associated environmental hazards.
Additionally, the technology may prove to be revolutionary
in the healthcare market for treatment of disease,
including human and animal infections and wounds. The
disinfection efficacy of Axenohl has been will documented
by independent testing laboratories. Axenohl eliminates
the following test organism strains all within one minute
and 99.9999% efficacy.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15442
Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538
Salmonella cholerasuis ATCC 10708
E.Coli ATCC 0157:H7
Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 11543
Enterococcus faecium ATCC 11543
Rhinovirus (common colds)
Rotavirus (infectious diarrhea)
Vancomycin-resistant-enterococci (VRE) Antibiotic-resistant bacteria
Target markets include: hospital and nursing home water
systems, point-of-use/point-of-entry; municipal, commercial
and residential drinking water, FDA compliant consumer
products, pools and spas, cisterns/wells, veterinary,
horticulture, agriculture and food processing applications.

Mr. Fern wants info on Bloodwater treatment:
I am trying to use coagulants (i.e. alum, FeCl3, FeSO4, etc)
to clarify this liquid effluent, but I have problems in
performing "jar test".
Do I need to test only the coagulant dosage, and then
test pH with the best dosage? Do I need to use Ca(OH)2
before or after the addition of the coagulant?
Do I have to test from low to high (10-1000ppm)
concentrations of coagulant or there is another way?
If I try to use electrocoagulation, which material must
electrodes be made of?
Any feedback will be welcome.
Thanks in advance

This week's photo is of a 24-inch-in-diameter Slurrycup grit
classifier with a one-cubic-yard Grit Snail dewatering unit,
located at the Florence, Oregon WWTP. Eutek® Systems, Inc.
meets the challenges of separating and classifying grit as
small as 50 micron (270 mesh), while providing secondary
washing to minimize organic content. The 'all hydraulic'
Slurrycup has no internal moving parts, increasing operating
reliability. Applications include grit washing, snail shell
removal, and primary sludge degritting.
