"Natural" Technology

Tyson Foods Dedicates New Wastewater Treatment Plant

Berlin, Maryland Plant Dedication Accompanied By Presentation of Land to The Nature Conservancy Of Maryland

July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE: TSN) today formally dedicated a new wastewater treatment plant at its Berlin, MD poultry processing plant that utilizes new and innovative "natural technology" developed by Ocean Arks International of Burlington, Vermont.

Living Machines are biologically diverse ecosystems modeled after nature.

The Ocean Arks' "Restorer Living Machine" is a biological treatment that utilizes various microorganisms, plants and vertebrates as a part of the wastewater treatment process. Construction is currently underway and once the system is on line it will treat approximately 1 million gallons of water a day that is used in Tyson's Berlin processing plant.

Once treated it is discharged, under a NPDES permit, into Kits Branch, which ultimately runs to the Atlantic Ocean.

This technology being installed by Tyson to upgrade its existing wastewater treatment system, is the result of a consent decree entered into by Tyson Foods last year with the state of Maryland. Tyson became the owner of this facility when it acquired Hudson Foods in 1998.

"I am really pleased to be here today for this important ceremony," said Greg Lee, Tyson Foods Chief Operating Officer. "Tyson Foods' commitment to protecting the environment, wherever we operate, is well known, and we believe this innovative process will do just that, help to further protect the environment of this beautiful region."

In addition to the dedication of the new wastewater treatment plant, Tyson presented to The Nature Conservancy of Maryland/D.C. the deed to nearly 100 acres of land in Wicomico County. The property, which is adjacent to the Conservancy's Nassawango Creek Preserve, will further protect the waters of Nassawango. A $20,000 check was also awarded to the Conservancy to help fund stewardship at Nassawango Creek Preserve. This presentation was made pursuant to the 2000 consent decree between Tyson and the State of Maryland.

"Nassawango Creek Preserve is habitat to over 90 species of rare plants and animals," said Nassawango Creek Project Manager Bill Bostian. "This preserve is especially important to neo-tropical migrants -- birds that migrate from Latin America -- who summer within Nassawango's 44,000-acre watershed and require large, undisturbed tracts of forest to rear their young. This additional forested acreage will undoubtedly provide more critical habitat for these beautiful songbirds."

"Operators Helping Operators"

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations Conference Offers Cooperative Spirit, Hands-on Training

September Meeting in Cincinnati Features 20 Interactive Skill Stations

Click here(Alexandria, Va.) -- Wastewater treatment plant operators seeking innovative ways to optimize operations and maintenance will give each other a hand this fall at the Water Environment Federation's (WEF) Plant Operations and Maintenance of Small & Medium Wastewater Treatment Plants Conference. Co-sponsored by the Ohio Water Environment Association (OWEA), the conference will be held September 16-18, 2001 in Cincinnati.

"This conference is about operators helping operators," explains Conference Co-Chair Keith Radick (Floyd, Browne Associates, Inc.). "Our goal is to improve water quality by improving the abilities of the front line." Lynn Marshall (Ford Hall) is the other co-chair.

The conference will provide comprehensive training opportunities, and will cover topics such as optimizing and maximizing operations and maintenance, predictive and preventive measures, innovative process control, system management tools and practices, creative problem solving, case histories, and solids handling.

Approximately 20 hands-on, interactive stations will be set up the afternoon of Sunday, September 16. This segment is a unique training opportunity that enables attendees to rotate every 20-30 minutes to a different station where a station assistant will present a specific skill. Operators will get an up-close look at the practices and methods of clarifier testing, microbiology, centrifugal pumps, jar testing, composting and sludge handling, and more.

Also on Sunday, two preconference workshops will be presented led by internationally known speakers. "Understanding the Activated Sludge Process," led by Wesley Eckenfelder (Brown and Caldwell), will review the principles of the activated sludge process and their application to municipal and industrial cases. Causes and Control of Activated Sludge Solids Separation Problems," led. by Glen Daigger (CH2M Hill), will cover the microbiological and physical causes of solids separation problems in the activated sludge process.

Also on September 16, Eckenfelder will deliver a keynote address during a special welcoming reception titled, "Let's Keep The Bugs Happy." The presentation will cover several operational variables in the activated sludge process -- dissolved oxygen, available nutrients, presence of inhibitory substances, and adverse temperature.-- that require control in order to keep "the bugs happy."

To register for this conference, contact the OWEA at 1(614) 268-4069, or visit online at http://www.wef.org/conferences

Gorman-Rupp Reports Net Sales Increased 14% in 2nd Qtr.

MANSFIELD, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 13, 2001--The Gorman-Rupp Company (AMEX:GRC) established record net sales for the second quarter and six months 2001, generating revenue increases of 14.2% for the quarter and 7.7% for the six months period.

Click hereResults for the quarter ended June 30, 2001 reported record net sales of $54,838,000 compared to $48,008,000 in 2000; net income for the second quarter 2001 and 2000 amounted to$3,998,000 and $3,661,000 equal to $0.47 and $0.42 per share, respectively.

Net sales for the six months 2001 amounted to $104,509,000 compared to $97,032,000 in 2000. Net income for the period was $7,602,000 compared to $7,761,000 equal to earnings per share of $0.89 and $0.90 for the six months 2001 and 2000, respectively.

The backlog of orders, reported at $91,600,000 and 26.3% above a year ago, is principally supported by the Company's business associated with the power generation and municipal wastewater markets.

Demand by G. E. Power Systems for fabricated components used in the gas turbine power generation industry and pump stations serving the municipal wastewater market principally accounted for the increase in sales. Shipments of pumps into the commercial and small pump markets were somewhat sluggish due to the downturn in the overall economy.

In June the Company was again named in the top 100 public Ohio companies by the Cleveland Plain Dealer in "The Plain Dealer 100." Gorman-Rupp was named as one of approximately 40 Ohio industrial manufacturing companies named in the recognition.

The Company was pleased to be included in this elite group, and the standing again confirms the financial and business success of Gorman-Rupp. The Company was pleased with the six-month results in light of the slowed U.S. economy and remains optimistic with the order backlog, global emphasis in power generation and expanding environmental awareness in water and wastewater.

The Gorman-Rupp Company is a manufacturer of pumps and related equipment for water, wastewater, construction, industrial, petroleum, original equipment, agricultural, fire and government applications.
