VSEP : First North American Installation for Treatment of Hog Manure

EMERYVILLE, CA -- New Logic Research, Inc., the maker of VSEP, a vibratory membrane filtration system, announces it has just completed a sale of its first North American filtration system to treat Hog Manure. The system will be installed and commissioned later this summer in Alberta, Canada.

New Logic has previously installed several manure filtration systems in Korea and Japan treating both digested manure effluent and raw manure. These installations in Asia are for both Dairy Cow Manure and for Hog Manure and have been operating successfully since May of 2000.

"Taking this waste product and liability and converting it to valuable byproducts makes good business sense," says New Logic's Chief Operating Officer, Greg Johnson. "With the contribution of VSEP, the hog and dairy farmer can also harvest electrical energy, concentrated organic fertilizer, and clean water for livestock consumption."

The use of VSEP reverse osmosis filtrate as a source of drinking water for pigs was recently studied at Ridgetown College, University of Guelph in Ontario Canada. In his report, Dr. James Morris concludes that there are no adverse effects on the health or growth performance of starter pigs after a prolonged study. Furthermore, Dr. Morris found that pigs during the later period of the study actually drank more of the VSEP permeate than the regular barn water.

The report goes on to say, "The ability to extract water clean enough without the presence of pathogens will produce a water quality good enough for drinking water to pigs. Such a capability would offer a tremendous benefit in reducing the amount of liquid spreading and to reduce the amount of water used in swine operations."

For a 2800 head Sow operation, the estimated operating costs for the manure filtration system containing the VSEP system alone are estimated by New Logic Research to be $1.40 per finished hog. This is significantly less expensive that other innovative technologies currently being tested for Hog Manure. Use of the VSEP system would bring Concentrated Animal Farm Operations (CAFOs) into compliance with the strictest regulations and can be done at a reasonable cost within the reach of most farmers.

Greg Johnson further states, "The VSEP membrane filtration system is an automated self-contained device incorporating polymeric reverse osmosis membranes that provide the water separation. RO membranes have been used for many years for desalination and other drinking water applications. The benefits of reverse osmosis are that the filtrate will be pathogen free and the membranes are very effective on all types of dissolved solids removal and not limited to removal of one or a few contaminants."

Acquisition : Pentair Receives Regulatory Approval Required to Buy WICOR

GOLDEN VALLEY, MN -- Pentair, Inc., announced today it has received clearance from the Federal Trade Commission for its planned acquisition of WICOR Industries, a unit of Wisconsin Energy Corporation, Milwaukee. In addition, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin approved the corporate restructuring of WICOR required to facilitate this transaction. Pentair said it expects to complete the transaction effective at the end of July. Upon closing of the acquisition, Pentair will have built a $2 billion water-focused business within its broader portfolio of companies.

"This WICOR acquisition will expand our scope and capacity to provide safe, clean water to customers worldwide," said Randall J. Hogan, chairman and chief executive officer of Pentair. "This clearly establishes Pentair as a global leader in water products."

Pentair said the WICOR acquisition transforms the company into a diversified manufacturer led by a $2 billion water business. "While the water business will now be the largest in our portfolio, we remain committed to a diverse business mix," said Hogan. "Our Enclosures Group is well positioned to continue growing profitably, and it will play an important role in the overall performance of Pentair."

According to Richard J. Cathcart, president and chief operating officer of Pentair's Water Technologies Group, "The WICOR acquisition creates a significant water and wastewater systems business with approximately $900 million in sales, a global pool and spa business with nearly $600 million in sales, and a strong filtration and purification business with approximately $500 million in sales." Cathcart added, "As we strive to fulfill our vision to provide safe, clean water, this acquisition presents significant growth opportunities across all of our businesses. We believe capturing those opportunities will be made easier by the strong management teams and strong product offers of both organizations."

"Employees at Pentair and WICOR have worked hard over the past several months to help us reach this day," stated Cathcart. "Our integration planning teams have defined a comprehensive framework for uniting our complementary organizations, and we look forward to completing the acquisition and moving forward as one organization."

California : Redlands Project Receives 2004 Drought Proofing Award

Redlands, CA -- The Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority (SAWPA) recently presented the 2004 “Drought Proofing Award” to the City of Redlands for its new state-of-the-art recycled water project.

SAWPA presents the annual award to projects, agencies, individuals, or organizations that engage in the most significant activity over the previous year to assist in “Drought Proofing” the Santa Ana River Watershed. Redlands’ $24 million project, which uses immersed membrane bio-reactor micro-filtration technology to treat wastewater, can produce up to 2.3 billion gallons of recycled water annually. It is the second largest plant in the world which uses a membrane bio-reactor.

Most of the water produced will be used in the cooling process of a nearby 1,000 megawatt power plant, currently being constructed by Southern California Edison. The water will also be used at the City’s landfill for dust suppression and as irrigation water for local business parks and agriculture.

“We are very proud of this important project,” said Redlands’ Chief of Water Resources, Douglas Headrick. “It helps us to protect the Santa Ana watershed by keeping our wastewater treatment plant in full regulatory compliance regarding discharge requirements, while providing a revenue stream that will pay for the majority of the project’s capital costs.”

“Most importantly,” Headrick said, “this project helps to reduce the demands on our limited drinking water supplies.” Redlands Municipal Utilities estimates the project will protect groundwater resources equivalent to 20 percent of the City’s current water production.

Mr. Anh wants information on coagulation:

Does it affect the coagulant ability if the coagulant period with rapid-mixing is too long, about a day?  (Click here to post a reply)

Mr. Balinghasay wants to know portable toilet disposal:

We are a municipal waste water treatment plant in China.  Recently, a new waste disposal company has been disposing 25 cu m of their toilet waste from hotels to our plant 50 meters from the influent pit. Mechanical separation by course screen and grit chamber.

There is a pumping station 500 meters from our plant, but the government reluctantly allowed this to happen.

My concern is  the transmission of enteric diseases thru fecal waste / odor contact by the operators / and collectors of solid waste..... what kind of medical check / inoculation is required to receive artificial immunity?

The odor has increase 5 times even with air treatment in the grit chamber.  What justification can we say to the to the government that the right place for disposal is thru the pumping station ?  Any replies would be highly appreciated
