Canada - E. Coli Claims 7th Victim
------------------------------------------------------------

WALKERTON, Ontario -- An E. coli outbreak in a Canadian farming
town has claimed the lives of two more patients, bringing the
death toll to seven. Hundreds more have been infected.

The Owen Sound Public Health unit, which oversees the
southwestern Ontario town of Walkerton, confirmed Tuesday that
an elderly patient died at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre,
but did not release the patient's identity.

The Toronto Sun reported that Betty Trushinski, 56, died at
the London Health Sciences Centre on Tuesday afternoon.
"Hopefully this is the last," nephew Tim Trushinski told the
Toronto Sun.

In total, six adults and a 2-year-old girl have succumbed to
a bacterial infection believed to have been spread through the
water supply in Walkerton, a town of 5,000 people 90 miles west
of Toronto.

The tainted water has stricken up to 1,000 people with diarrhea,
nausea, headaches and fever, symptoms of E. coli infection.
The infection cannot be treated with antibiotics. A utility
manager accused of failing to notify health officials about
the E. coli in the water supply made his first public appearance
since the outbreak.

Stan Koebel, general manager of Walkerton's Public Utilities
Commission, appeared distraught Tuesday as he stood next to
his lawyer outside the Trinity Lutheran Church before a private
prayer meeting attended by about 20 people. Koebel offered no
comment.

"He is a man who is suffering a great deal along with many
others. He has been devastated with the loss of lives and
suggestions that he or anyone is to blame," said the lawyer,
Bill Trudell. "This is a horrible tragedy that no one wanted,
that no one planned."

City officials say Koebel has acknowledged that the utility
that oversees the wells that provide water to the town knew
of the contamination as early as May 18, but never told
municipal or health authorities.

The Environment Ministry has admitted it knew there were
problems with the water, yet broke its own rules when it
failed to notify health authorities. One class-action lawsuit
has been filed, accusing local officials of failing to
notify Walkerton residents of the E. coli contamination
for days after finding out.

Ontario's environment minister has announced regulations to
improve water testing and guarantee immediate reporting on
contamination. Police and health officials were investigating
how the wells in Walkerton became contaminated with the
intestinal disease usually spread through human or animal
feces.

Flooding that followed a heavy storm on May 12 might have
caused E. coli to enter the wells. City officials acknowledged
that the chlorinating system on one of the town's two main
wells was malfunctioning for weeks before people started
getting sick.

A provincial water agency took control of the local water
utility last week.
