AWWA Meeting : A Great Time In "Steamy" Orlando

This week's photo is titled, "Hooking up with old friends". The AWWA Show was great, good to see old bud'sOrange County Convention Center, Orlando, FL -- Thousands of water treatment professionals streamed into the convention center to attend this years ACE 2004.  Walking the busy aisles on the exhibition floor was fun, and it was nice to see familiar faces and make some new friends too!

Here are the guys from Aquastore (CST Industries), from left to right:  Tom Renich and Chris Forbes from Aquastore and on the right is John Viale from Florida Aquastore, their local dealer.

CST Industries is the parent company to both Aquastore and Columbian TecTank, manufacture of glass-fused-to-steel and epoxy coated tanks for water storage and treatment.  For more information visit their web sites at http://www.aquastore.com and http://www.tectank.comColumbian-TecTank

In the AWWA's New Product Technology Showcase, here is Michael Lipparelli (center) of Solar Bee, Pump Systems Inc., explaining the latest in solar-powered lagoon circulators to a group of Mexican water engineers.

The SolarBee's mixing action greatly accelerates the biological and chemical processes while using no external power source, neat! For more information, visit Solar Bee's web site at:  http://www.solarbee.com/

Here are two smiling faces, Tim Schilz (on the right) and John Wright (on the left) from Emerson Process' Rosemount Analytical.  They were busy selling controls and instrumentation, but took a moment with me to talk about some of Emerson's new developments.  I hope John remembers to send me that CDROM, he promised.

Emerson's Process Management group offers the industry's broadest array of process-automation products. Their technology know-how and application experience enable us to develop measurement and analytical instruments, final-control devices, and systems and software.  Find more information about Emerson at:  http://www.emersonprocess.com/

I have more photographs than space allows!  It was a great time and good to see everyone.  The ACE 2004 was a well attended event, hope to see you there next year.

New Software : Haestad Methods Releases FlowMaster 2005

Waterbury, CT - Today, Haestad Methods introduced FlowMaster 2005, an advanced version of its popular hydraulic toolbox for water resources engineers. FlowMaster 2005 is a powerful, easy-to-use modeling software program that lets professionals streamline the hydraulic design and analysis of pipes, open channels, weirs, orifices, and inlets.

Version 2005 now includes gradually varied flow analysis and several new section types to assist engineers with solving complex hydraulic problems quickly and accurately. Improved graphical formatting and customization capabilities make the built-in rating tables and performance curves even more attractive.

“Haestad’s hydraulic toolbox continues to help engineers work smarter by providing the flexibility to solve for any unknown variable, and the software’s newly enhanced explorer-style worksheet management capabilities make it easier than ever to organize complex projects,” said Gregg Herrin, Product Manager for stormwater and sanitary sewer applications for Haestad Methods. “Civil engineers need a product with a straightforward interface for performing accurate hydraulic calculations, and that’s exactly what FlowMaster gives them.”

FlowMaster’s unique design and analysis techniques, combined with its ease of use, have made it the tool of choice for tens of thousands of engineers. Basil Finnegan, Building Official for the Town of Bridgewater, Virginia, stated, “I use FlowMaster exclusively now for checking ditch capacity and velocity constraints, curb inlet sizing, and pressure drops for water service piping to new construction."

Version 2005 empowers modelers to:

-Quickly perform hydraulic calculations for dozens of element types, from pipes to open channels to drop inlets to weirs
-Solve for any unknown property or design for any desired characteristic
-Produce detailed reports, graphs, and rating tables
-Generate gradually varied flow profiles for pipes and open channels.

FlowMaster has been accepted by the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and added to its list of numerical models accepted for use in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). For more information on FlowMaster, visit www.haestad.com/flowmaster

Other Show News : Two Water Utilities Honored for Excellence in Water Treatment

ORLANDO, FL –- Champlain Water District (CWD) and the Central Utah Water Conservancy District were honored today at the American Water Works Association’s (AWWA) Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE) as the only two plants in the country to achieve Phase IV “Excellence in Water Treatment” recognition from the Partnership for Safe Water. Phase IV is the highest possible level of performance that can be achieved in the four-phased Partnership program.

“Reaching Phase IV status is a very significant achievement in the ongoing work to meet stringent performance goals,” said Cynthia Dougherty, EPA Director of the Office of Groundwater and Drinking Water, who presented awards to the two utilities at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. “These utilities epitomize the commitment and effort needed to ensure the enhancement of drinking water quality and operational excellence in water treatment.”

CWD, which first achieved Phase IV Excellence in 1999, has maintained an optimal level of performance for five years, the only utility in the country to do so.

The Partnership is a national volunteer initiative developed by the USEPA and other water organizations representing water suppliers striving to provide their communities with drinking water quality that surpasses the required federal standards and signifies optimized plant performance. The program currently includes more than 200 water utilities, collectively serving more than 90 million people. As members of the Partnership, utilities make a pledge to their communities to improve their treatment operations to reduce the risk of exposure to microbial contaminants, namely Cryptosporidium, a parasite that can cause illness. By making this commitment, the member utilities’ treatment practices undergo a rigorous review developed by national experts, and includes a four-phased self-assessment and peer review process.

The Partnership for Safe Water is sponsored by the American Water Works Association, Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies, Association of State Drinking Water Administrators, United States Environmental Protection Agency, National Association of Water Companies, and the American Water Works Association Research Foundation.

AWWA is the authoritative resource for knowledge, information, and advocacy to improve the quality and supply of drinking water in North America and beyond. AWWA is the largest organization of water professionals in the world. AWWA advances public health, safety and welfare by uniting the efforts of the full spectrum of the drinking water community. Through our collective strength we become better stewards of water for the greatest good of the people and the environment.

Bert wants help with pH puzzle:

Here's an interesting question. Plant flows through and Eq basin, then to a sump that pumps to an elevated Aeration basin. Basin has blowers and jet mix pumps. The plant historically has a very low pH which requires adjustment through the addition of caustic.

Now for the interesting part. EQ basin pH 8.5 (abnormally high). Aeration basin sump pH 11.2 (caustic is injected here)  Aeration basin pH 6.5. The values were verified through several samples at different times and recalibrated field and lab meters.

I am aware that bacteria excrete an acid, but I seriously doubt they could account for this type of drop in pH. I think part of the problem is the Jet mixing.

Data: MLSS 4800, MLVSS 60 %, Sludge age 8 - 10 days (COD basis) COD 650-800.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Grinders Help One City Close the Lid on Pump Station Repairs

Santa Cruz County has 12 in-channel Muffin Monsters in six of its pump stations. The county’s water and wastewater division is a largely rural-based service area of some 250,000 residents with a handful of light industries and businesses. Some 50 pump stations, ranging from 12 to 22 mgd capacity, pump wastewater through about 250 miles of pain to a 50-mgd trickling filter plant operated by Santa Cruz.
