Largest Brackish Water Desalination Facility in Caribbean Dedicated
------------------------------------------------------------

WATERTOWN, Mass., June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- In Barbados, West
Indies on June 10, Ionics, Incorporated (NYSE: ION) and
Barbados-based Williams Industries, Inc. participated, along
with local officials, in the dedication of the largest brackish
water desalination facility in the Caribbean. The Honorable
Rommel Marshall, Minister of Public Works and Transport,
officiated. The new water desalination plant will provide fresh,
potable drinking water to one-sixth of the island's 264,000
people. The 30,000 cubic meter per day (7.9 million gallons
per day) plant utilizes reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology.

In conjunction with the new desalination facility, a water
education centre was also established which will serve as a
venue for school children, island visitors and the general
public to learn about water, its history on the island, and
the role of water desalination.

Desalinated water is being provided to the BWA on a "build-
own-operate" or privatized basis by Ionics Freshwater Ltd.,
a joint venture between Ionics and Williams Industries. Under
the terms of the agreement, Ionics Freshwater Ltd. will
operate and maintain the facility and sell the desalinated
water to the BWA for a period of up to 15 years.

"This facility is now our most secure source of potable water,
being technologically capable of providing pure water over
a wide variation in quality of feedwater supplies and, in
the event of a national disaster, which of course we hope
and pray will never occur, would be the one source likely to
suffer least. In many respects this plant becomes a safety
net, without which we have been doing our balancing acts for
too long," according to Minister Rommel.

Mr. Goldstein announced at the official opening ceremony
that Ionics, Incorporated would be awarding a scholarship
to a student pursuing studies in the field of science and
technology at the University of the West Indies, St.Augustine
campus, "consistent both with the company's commitment to
Barbados and to the value placed on educating our youth,
particularly in the disciplines of science and engineering."

Azurix Selected for $130 Million W&WW Treatment Contracts
------------------------------------------------------------

HOUSTON, June 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Azurix Corp. (NYSE: AZX)
announced today that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Azurix North
America, has been selected to negotiate agreements to provide
water and wastewater services to three more communities in the
United States.

The operations and maintenance contracts for communities in
Louisiana and New Jersey are valued in excess of $130 million.
These contracts would commence following completion of the
definitive agreements with the municipalities.

"We are beginning to see the results of our efforts to expand
the service business in North America," said Rebecca Mark,
chairman and CEO of Azurix. "We are very gratified that our
efforts to earn the confidence of these new clients is proving
successful. It demonstrates our ability to meet the specific
needs of municipal clients in a cost effective and creative way."

The Council of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, voted last week
to award a $10 million five-year contract to Azurix North
America to operate and maintain its East Bank Wastewater
Treatment Plant. The contract has two five-year options for
renewal giving it a potential value of up to $30 million. A
competing bidder held the previous five-year contract.

"We are particularly pleased to be selected for this job
because it is so rare to be able to unseat an incumbent service
provider. It was a tough battle and we are happy to be the
winner, but the real winners are the citizens of Jefferson
Parish," said John Stokes, president and CEO of Azurix
North America.

The Middlesex County Improvement Authority of Middlesex, N.J.,
also voted last week to commence negotiations on a 20-year
contract with Azurix North America to operate and maintain
water treatment and distribution systems for the city of New
Brunswick and the town of North Brunswick. Azurix teamed with
local contractor JJS Services for the contract, valued at more
than $120 million.

These latest contracts come on the heels of successful contract
awards in Wildwood, N.J., Fountain Lakes and Pine Lakes, Fla.,
Sunbelt Municipal Utility District, Tex., and Mitchell, Ont.
Azurix North America also holds operating contracts for water
and wastewater facilities in Seattle, Wash., Hamilton- Wentworth,
Ont., Glynn County, Ga., and other locations throughout the United
States and Canada.

"We have dedicated a lot of effort to expand our residuals
management business over the last year, and now the operations
and maintenance business is following suit," Stokes added.
"Over the next year, we expect to see the engineering and
underground infrastructure rehabilitation businesses come on
strong as well."

Engineers see Water, Energy as Biggest Future Challenges
------------------------------------------------------------

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- About 400 engineers
from various disciplines -- including civil, chemical,
mechanical and electrical engineering -- recently predicted
water would be among the top challenges and innovations for
the 21st century. In the ITT Industries/Discover Engineering
Survey, "engineers across the world … are constantly driving
technology to solve the problems we will face - and transform
the ways in which we will live, work and play," says Travis
Engen, chairman and CEO of ITT.

According to Steve Petranek, editor of Discover, "All too
often, the men and women engaged in this 'brave new thinking'
go unrecognized," said Steve Petranelk, editor of Discover.
"Through the Discover Awards, and the survey, we can bring
a measure of recognition to those who contribute to a better
world."

According to respondents, the greatest challenges that
engineers will face in the 21st century are 1) finding new
energy sources, 2) supplying the world with clean water,
3) designing products that do not harm the environment,
4) exploring deeper into space, 5) curing diseases and
prolonging life with biomedical engineering, and 6) planning
cities and allocating resources to accommodate the growing
population.

Most of the survey sample was provided by the American
Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Society of Civil
Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, USA,
and was coordinated by the American Association of
Engineering Societies.

Mr. Ryder needs help with nickel precipitation:

I supervise a hazardous waste TSDF that includes inorganic
waste water treatment. Our system uses a basic pH adjust,
lime/sulfide precipitation with flocculant process. We often
have difficulty dropping out nickel from ~10 ppm down to 4pmm.
Any thoughts or ideas?

Anyone with experience with microfiltration? Ion exchange
works but is costly due to other non-regulated metal
contaminants.
