Hi-Ho, Odor Away! : Nasal Ranger Measures Emissions

Click hereLAKE ELMO, Minn., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Just how strong is that odor coming from the neighboring hog farm, wastewater treatment plant, food processing building or paper mill? Well, here comes the Nasal Ranger riding in with the answer.

St. Croix Sensory, a Lake Elmo, Minnesota company, has developed the Nasal Ranger Field Olfactometer. The Nasal Ranger is a hand-held instrument that measures odor. By diluting the odor source and with a calibrated flow rate, the Nasal Ranger operator can objectively determine the odor's strength.

For less than $1,500, cities, counties, and states can now confidently measure odor emissions within their communities. Industries now have a reliable tool for their proactive odor monitor programs. And air quality agents can now quickly and accurately quantify odor complaints.

Current Nasal Ranger users like the USDA, State of Missouri, Idaho, Los Angeles, Toronto, Bucknell and Duke University are developing and researching odor monitoring programs that will improve our air quality. By first accurately quantifying the odor's strength with the Nasal Ranger, one can then begin to make quality decisions regarding the odor's source.

St. Croix Sensory continues to be an industry leader specializing in odor measurement equipment, services and training.

For more information on the Nasal Ranger Field Olfactometer go to www.nasalranger.com or call 800-879-9231.

AWWA Encourages Water Professionals to Participate Rebuilding Iraq

Click hereDENVER - The American Water Works Association (AWWA) is encouraging water professionals throughout the nation to consider participating in the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Local Governance Program to help rebuild supply and distribution water systems in Iraq.

Research Triangle Institute (RTI) has contracted with USAID to provide local governance support in Iraq. RTI is identifying Public Water Works Specialists to provide short-term and long-term technical assistance in Iraqi water supply/distribution systems, and to provide Iraqi counterparts with the knowledge, skills and abilities to repair and sustain Iraqi water systems.

RTI is looking for experienced water professionals who are willing to leave for Iraq within 10-14 days. The average assignment would last 2-4 months. Compensation and terms of contractual service will be negotiated between the individual, his/her employer and RTI.

"Water professionals throughout America are some of the best trained in the world," Jack Hoffbuhr, Executive Director of AWWA said. "The water situation in Iraq is still in a critical stage and present enormous humanitarian issues and challenges. This is an opportunity to help rebuild the Iraqi water system to assure that the Iraqi people are receiving safe and healthy drinking water."

The attached notice provides a description of the USAID effort and contact information for those interested in participating in this program.

How to Apply Please submit resume or CV online through RTI's website,

www.rti.org/careers/iraqsng/

Only short-listed candidates with resumes submitted online will be acknowledged. No phone calls please.

Membrane Technology : Solvay Adds Halar ECTFE

ALPHARETTA, Ga., May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Solvay Advanced Polymers, L.L.C. announces the addition of Halar ECTFE to its portfolio of high-performance polymers for the membrane industry. The exceptional chemical resistance and stability at high pH levels of this fluoropolymer broadens the performance capabilities of the company's product offering. This product will be featured in the company's exhibit at the upcoming American Water Works Association (AWWA) annual conference and exposition being held in Anaheim, Calif., June 15-19, 2003.

Halar ECTFE is a copolymer of ethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene that brings advantages to membranes used in water purification systems used for both potable and waste water treatment. It has excellent resistance to aggressive cleaning agents. The more aggressive the cleaning agent, the cleaner the membrane. The cleaner the membrane, the higher its flux and better overall operating efficiency.

Membranes made with Halar ECTFE can last longer and require fewer replacements because of the polymer's resistance to a wide range of chemicals. These membranes are not affected by direct exposure to strong bases (such as sodium and potassium hydroxides), strong mineral and oxidizing acids (such as sulfuric and hydrofluoric acids), and chlorinated compounds (such as methylene chloride and sodium hypochlorite). This is a significant performance advantage over many other materials used for polymeric membranes today.

Halar ECTFE is also resistant to strong polar solvents, such as dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylacetamide (DMAC), and N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP), which are typically used to fabricate polymeric membranes.

The company currently offers two grades of Halar ECTFE designed especially for the membrane industry.

About Solvay Advanced Polymers

Solvay Advanced Polymers, L.L.C. is an indirect subsidiary of Solvay America, Inc., the U.S. holding company of Solvay, S.A. The company offers the widest range of high-performance polymers for membranes in the world today. This includes a full line of sulfone polymers and fluoropolymers that are used to create porous filaments or flat sheet used in micro, ultra and reverse osmosis membranes. These membranes can be used in applications ranging from artificial kidneys for blood purification to wastewater recovery as well as food and beverage processing. Mr. Keenan needs SBR help:

I am looking to contact an expert in the design/operation of Sequential Batch Reactor systems. In particular I would like to discuss a specific situation - where there is an existing SBR Treatment Plant, (two tank system), treating wastewater from a pharmaceutical plant.

The treatment system has experienced some problems with high TDS, and sodium acetate in the raw wastewater feed. It is alleged that the treatment process was also giving off an offensive odor, (described generally as being a "dank", or "wet carpet", or "musty", odor), which has been detected over a wide area.

The reactor tanks are aerated with diffused air, and independent mixing is provided.  I would like to here from anyone with expertise in the operation of an SBR system for this type of wastewater.
