UV-Peroxide : New WTP Provides
Barrier Against Contaminants
VELSERBROEK,
Netherlands -- In its drinking water facility in Andijk,
recently opened by Prince Willem-Alexander, PWN
Waterleidingbedrijf Noord-Holland applies a new, innovative
water treatment process. The process combines UV light and
hydrogen peroxide to produce reliable drinking water from
surface water. This is the first UV-peroxide facility on
this scale. Since this technology is interesting for all
water treatment facilities using surface water for drinking
water production, it is of great interest worldwide.
PWN is
the first drinking water treatment facility successfully
applying the UV-peroxide technology on a large scale. PWN
developed this technology in collaboration with the Canadian
supplier of the UV equipment.
A
Technology for the Future
UV-peroxide treatment is based on the combined use of UV
light and hydrogen peroxide. It is a cost-effective method,
since two treatment steps are integrated: disinfection and
degradation of organic micro-contaminants. These are, among
others, pesticides and pharmaceuticals. An increasing number
of these compounds are found in drinking water. Since this
new treatment provides a general barrier against all
problematic contaminants, drinking water quality is
guaranteed for now and in the future.
No
More Chlorine use
An
important advantage of this technology is that chlorine is
no longer needed primary for disinfection at PWN. This
eliminates the environmental and safety risks associated
with the use of chlorine. However, conventional UV treatment
uses relatively much energy. Therefore, PWN has taken all
possible measures to reduce energy consumption to the
absolute minimum. In addition, PWN uses "green power" for
the process, and surplus heat is re-used for heating.
A
seminar will be held on Friday, March 18, during which
international speakers will give a comprehensive overview
over the possible applications of UV/H2O2.

Aqua-Aerobic : Joins Relief
Efforts for Tsunami Victims
Rockford,
IL -- Aqua-Aerobic Systems and its employees have
underwritten the cost of a mobile water treatment unit to be
used in the tsunami-stricken area of Indonesia. The plant is
being assembled by the company’s Indonesia representative,
PT Envitech Perkasa.
Under
refugee conditions, each unit can provide drinking water for
3000 people per day. The cost per unit is approximately US
$32,000, which includes transportation to the site and
chemicals, fuel and an operator for six months. When the
unit is no longer needed for the tsunami relief efforts, it
will most likely be used to relieve other crisis situations
or be dispatched to villages without piped water.
The
unit will be named “Rockford” and will have an inscribed
plaque that reads “For our Friends in Indonesia. From the
employees of Aqua-Aerobic Systems, USA”. Robert Wimmer,
President of Aqua-Aerobic Systems commented “Both the
company and our employees wanted to help the relief efforts
in some way. When we contacted PT Envitech Perkasa and they
told us of the great need for water and their efforts to
raise funds for mobile water plants, funding one of the
units seemed the right thing for us to do.”

Reservoirs : US Patent Awarded For Water
Management System
Fort
Washington, PA -- The United States Patent and Trademark
Office has issued U.S. patent number 6,811,710 to Severn
Trent Services for its Reservoir Management System.
The Reservoir Management
System (RMS) is designed to control chlorine-related
reservoir water quality and temperature uniformity in
large water-containing reservoirs while reducing
operational costs. Commercially tested since 1997, the
system has proven to be an economical solution to
manage, maintain and control residual levels across
varying municipal, commercial and industrial
applications. Unlike conventional mixing systems, Severn
Trent’s technology offers cost efficiencies through
decreased power consumption and faster installation and
service time. Installation of an RMS does not require
plumbing changes and can be completed while the
reservoir system is still in operation.
The RMS uses real-time water
quality samples from inside the reservoir, automatically
detecting and feeding the level of chlorine or
chloramines required to maintain a consistent
predetermined residual. The system’s integrated analyzer
provides continuous, accurate measurement of free
chlorine and chloramines. The RMS is compact and
operated independent of reservoir level, input flows or
output flows.
Once installed in the
reservoir, the circulatory motion of the water created
by the RMS thoroughly mixes the contents of the tank,
breaking the temperature stratification. When an
analyzer on the RMS system senses a drop in chlorine
residual, the system injects the disinfection chemical
until proper residual levels are reestablished.
Severn Trent’s RMS is
currently in use in 60 reservoirs around the world.
About Severn Trent Services
Severn Trent Services, based
in Fort Washington, Pa., is a leading supplier of water
and wastewater treatment solutions. The company’s broad
range of products and services is concentrated around
disinfection, instrumentation, and filtration
technologies, pipeline analysis, rehabilitation and
repair services, contract operating services and
state-of-the-art residential metering products and
services.

Mr. Ruse
needs help sizing a WWTP site:
What is the best method to
determine the size of a wastewater treatment site for a
manufacturing plant? The plant is close to a new
housing addition.
We are moving into this plant
that had little waste and sent it directly to the sewer.
We won't be that lucky. I want to use online controls
and a place to divert so my fines will be at a min. I
have 5 acres to work with.

Ms. McKiernan wants know more about settling:
Can someone
point me to information related to elevated conductivities
and their effect on SVI's? We are dealing with raw
conductivity routinely over 2200 umohm and up to 3200.
The sludge typically has poor SVI's during colder months (>
200 and up to 800). SVI improves below 200 during warmer
months.
Is it possible
that conductivity swings are throwing our 'bugs' off?
