Tampa Seawater Desalination Plant To Start Providing Drinking Water

Click hereTAMPA BAY, Fla., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Tampa Bay Seawater Desalination plant uses seawater from Tampa Bay to provide an environmentally friendly, drought-proof, sustainable supply of drinking water. Although it will initially produce water at a rate of 4.2 million gallons a day (mgd), its output will be 25 mgd when at full capacity, making it the largest RO seawater desalination facility in North America.

The Tampa Bay Seawater Desalination plant will provide the Tampa Bay region with 10 percent of its drinking water. Numerous independent environmental studies predict the facility will not increase Tampa Bay's salinity beyond its normal seasonal variations or have any impact on the bay's marine life.

Tampa Bay Seawater Desalination is producing the world's least expensive desalinated water. Its average wholesale cost over the next 30 years is projected at just $2.49 per thousand gallons. Co-funding by the Southwest Florida Water Management District through its Partnership Agreement with Tampa Bay Water of up to $85 million for the plant's capital costs has further lowered the 30-year projected average cost to $1.88 per thousand gallons.

ppB-Level : Automated Laboratory Titrator Measures Water Disinfectants

Click hereLoveland, Colorado -- Hach Company is pleased to announce the only automated titrator designed for the water quality laboratory. The AutoCAT 9000 bench top system automatically completes all USEPA-approved amperometric titration methods for chlorine, calculates analyte concentration, and provides real-time graphics display.

The AutoCAT allows the water quality analyst to complete forward titration with a detection limit of 5 µg/L and back titration with a detection limit of 10 µg/L, all with the ease of colorimetric technique. The AutoCAT 9000 also includes USEPA-approved methods for chlorine dioxide and chlorite (plus a sulfite method for process control), making it a comprehensive solution for the facility that is modifying current disinfection processes or implementing new disinfection technology.

Further, it offers titrant calibration routines, data archiving, print output, and even electrode cleaning, all executed through easy-to-use interface prompts in English or Spanish.

Hach Company manufactures and distributes analytical instruments and reagents used to test the quality of water and other aqueous solutions. Their systems are designed to simplify analysis with a goal of quality products and competent, friendly support.

Reliable Distribution : Beijing Waterworks Purchases WaterCAD

Click hereWATERBURY, CT, -- Beijing Waterworks Group, the largest water utility in China, purchased Haestad Methods' WaterCAD software to help the City of Beijing guarantee the reliability of its water distribution system for the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Support for the World Olympics is not new to Haestad Methods. Haestad Methods' SewerCAD sanitary sewer modeling software was used to help prepare the sanitary sewer facilities in Park City, Utah (USA) for the 2002 Winter Games. WaterCAD, Haestad Methods' water distribution modeling software, was selected by Athens Water and Sewer (Greece) to upgrade its water system for the large influx of visitors that will be generated by the 2004 Olympics.

Beijing will use WaterCAD in a similar manner to help modernize the City's water facilities. "Beijing has aggressive and time-sensitive schedules to meet, which require software that is not only technologically advanced but is supported by local specialists," said Mr. Liu Hu Nian, Vice General Manager of Planning and Development for Beijing Waterworks Group.

Liu added, "We selected WaterCAD for its superior data management and sophisticated hydraulic and water quality model features. Though WaterCAD passed rigorous technical evaluations with flying colors, the availability of local support and on-site training played a significant role in our decision-making process."

Haestad Methods' release of Chinese-version products and its local representation in China have both contributed to the success of winning the trust of clients in this region. The Beijing Waterworks contract demonstrates that Haestad Methods' commitment to the Chinese market has been very well received and that local companies are confident in Haestad Methods' ability to deliver water-modeling solutions.

"Our release of the Chinese version of WaterCAD further solidifies Haestad Methods' continued support to this sector and has been met with overwhelming interest from all the major water companies in China," said Douglas Maitland, Director of International Sales for Haestad Methods. "The response has been very encouraging."

For more information call Haestad Methods at 1-800-727-6555 (USA and Canada) or +1-203-755-1666 (worldwide), e-mail info@haestad.com , or visit www.haestad.com

Free CD : EPA Provides Tools to Improve Septic System Management

Click hereStressing the environmental importance of proper septic tank management to prevent pollution from entering the nation's rivers, lakes, coasts, and groundwater, EPA is providing approximately 4,000 city and county public health officials with materials to continue efforts to educate citizens about proper septic system management.

Failing and improperly managed septic systems are a significant source of water pollution, potentially causing contamination of drinking water wells or restricting shellfish harvest. Septic systems serve approximately 25 percent of U.S. households, and one in every three new homes built today uses these systems – making proper maintenance essential for protecting America's waters.

"Public education is the key to improving septic system management. Citizens need to better understand the potential harm improperly managed septic systems can have on the environment and public health and what they can do to help," said EPA Assistant Administrator for Water G. Tracy Mehan, III.

As part of EPA's year-long celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, the Agency has developed a CD-based kit that communities can use to reach out to citizens. Using the CD, communities can inexpensively produce customized versions of brochures, utility bill inserts, and other useful information.  Each document contains space where communities can add local information, so citizens will know how to obtain additional information.

To order copies of the Wastewater Month CD or hard copies of these materials, visit the Wastewater Month website at www.epa.gov/npdes/wastewatermonth or contact Nikos Singelis, of the Office of Wastewater Management, at singelis.nikos@epa.gov

A prison requires softening of the water supply, the specification is "it must reduce the scaling problems resulting from this water".

The usage is 430 m3 per hour, apart from ion exchange, could one achieve the object by reducing the pH( using citric or CO2). Alternatively could hexametaphosphate control being a conductivity controller.
