Iraq : FluorAMEC Joint Venture Awarded Two Contracts for Iraq Totaling $1.1B

BALISO VIEJO, CA -- Fluor Corporation announced today that its joint venture, FluorAMEC LLC, has been awarded two contracts by the U.S. Department of Defense to reconstruct Iraq's public works and water sector infrastructure. Values of the two joint-venture contracts have ceilings of US$600 million and US$500 million, respectively.

Under these contracts, FluorAMEC will provide design-build construction services for the rehabilitation of existing, and construction of new, potable water distribution and treatment systems, municipal sewer collection and treatment systems, and solid waste management systems throughout Iraq.

These awards are two of 10 major reconstruction contracts being awarded by the Department of Defense in support of the Coalition Provisional Authority Program Management Office (PMO) for services in five sectors -- electrical, public works/water, transportation/communications, security/justice, and buildings/education/health. FluorAMEC previously was awarded a Department of Defense contract for design-build construction services in the electrical sector.

The PMO manages the $18.4 billion appropriated by the U.S. Congress to support the reconstruction of Iraqi infrastructure and is responsible for all activities associated with program, project, asset, construction and financial management of that portion of the reconstruction effort undertaken by the United States. The goal of PMO, and the prime contractors that are selected, is to assist Iraq in rebuilding infrastructure, growing employment opportunities for Iraqi citizens, and building skill sets and capacity for a strong and successful future for Iraqis.

AMEC plc provides engineering, design, project delivery and maintenance support to clients in the oil & gas; transport; infrastructure and industrial sectors. The company generated revenues of 4.7 billion pounds in 2003 and works at the local, national and international levels, employing 45,000 people throughout the U.K., continental Europe, North America and some 40 countries worldwide. For more information, visit http://www.amec.com/

Fluor Corporation provides services on a global basis in the fields of engineering, procurement, construction, operations, maintenance and project management. Headquartered in Aliso Viejo, Calif., Fluor is a FORTUNE 500 company with revenues of nearly $9 billion in 2003.

Awards : Danish and American Ecologists Share 2004 Stockholm Water Prize

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- The 2004 Stockholm Water Prize has been awarded to Professors Sven Erik Jorgensen, Denmark, and William J. Mitsch, USA, "for their pioneering development and global dissemination of ecological models of lakes and wetlands, widely applied as effective tools in sustainable water resource management".

By expanding the knowledge of how lakes and wetlands function, Professors Jorgensen and Mitsch have contributed considerably to understanding how to make human use of them more sustainable and how to protect them better in the future.

Professor Jorgensen, 69, is a professor of environmental chemistry at the Danish University of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Copenhagen. Professor Mitsch, 56, is a professor of natural resources and environmental science and director of the Olentangy River Wetland Research Park at The Ohio State University in Columbus. Their theoretical and applied work on lake and wetland ecosystems, management of lake and wetland water quality, and lake, river and wetland conservation, restoration and usage has been acknowledged and implemented in both developing and developed countries.

The scientific fields of the Laureates complement one another and they will share the 2004 Stockholm Water Prize. His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden will present the Prize in the Stockholm City Hall on Thursday, August 19, 2004. The Laureates will also share the USD 150,000 Prize sum.

EPA : Aquatic Ecosystems Research Applications Requested

Washington, DC -- To protect the environment from both man-made and natural disturbances, EPA is seeking applications for research on the response of ecosystems to major stressors. An example of a human stressor is the discharge of pollutants into water; a natural event could be a severe storm and subsequent flooding. There are two objectives of this research.

The first goal is to improve understanding of the resilience of ecosystems, meaning the amount of disturbance that an ecosystem can withstand and how long it takes an ecosystem to recover. The second goal is to use practical insights from analysis of past thresholds (conditions beyond which there was an abrupt change in the ecosystem) to develop adaptive management practices for similar ecosystems to prevent problems before they occur. This work will help anticipate and assess future environmental stressors before their effects can adversely impact people or the environment.

Applications may be submitted electronically through the new Federal Funding Opportunities (FedGrants) system ( http://www.fedgrants.gov ). EPA will use this web site to provide the public with an efficient and simple electronic means to find and apply for grants. EPA anticipates making 10 awards, each in the range of $150,000 per year for three years through its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program.

Applications must be received by June 22.

To learn more about this request for applications, visit: http://es.epa.gov/ncer/rfa/2004/2004_aqua_sys.html or go to: http://www.fedgrants.gov

For more information about the STAR grants program, visit: http://www.epa.gov/ncer

Mr. Rao needs help with a fluidized bed reactor:

One of my colleagues designed aerobic fluidized bed reactor for a sewage treatment plant with a  BOD loading of 6.5 kg/cum day of media. The media is a spiral media (Fujino spiral) which has 300sqm/cu.m area. Now I have to commission the plant and show the results.

The supplier of the media claims that 10-20 kg BOD/cu.m day of media volume.  Can any media take such high loading in aerobic fixed film system and produce above 90% efficiency.

What is the maximum BOD loading allowed for aerobic FBR for the treatment of sewage - inlet 300mg/l outlet less than 20mg/l.  Can any one suggest the design criteria for aerobic fluidized bed reactor?   (Click here to post a reply)
