BALISO
VIEJO, CA -- Fluor Corporation announced today that its
joint venture, FluorAMEC LLC, has been awarded two contracts
by the U.S. Department of Defense to reconstruct Iraq's
public works and water sector infrastructure. Values of the
two joint-venture contracts have ceilings of US$600 million
and US$500 million, respectively.
Under these contracts, FluorAMEC
will provide design-build construction services for the
rehabilitation of existing, and construction of new, potable
water distribution and treatment systems, municipal sewer
collection and treatment systems, and solid waste management
systems throughout Iraq.
These awards are two of 10 major

a Department of Defense contract for design-build
construction services in the electrical sector.

reconstruction of Iraqi infrastructure and is responsible

construction and financial management of that portion of the
reconstruction effort undertaken by the United States. The
goal of PMO, and the prime contractors that are selected, is
to assist Iraq in rebuilding infrastructure, growing
employment opportunities for Iraqi citizens, and building
skill sets and capacity for a strong and successful future
for Iraqis.
AMEC plc provides engineering,
design, project delivery and maintenance support to clients

Ecologists Share 2004 Stockholm Water Prize
STOCKHOLM,
Sweden -- The 2004 Stockholm Water Prize has been awarded to
Professors Sven Erik Jorgensen, Denmark, and William J.
Mitsch, USA, "for their pioneering development and global
dissemination of ecological models of lakes and wetlands,
widely applied as effective tools in sustainable water
resource management".

more sustainable and how to protect them better in the
future.
Professor Jorgensen, 69, is a professor of environmental
chemistry at the Danish University of Pharmaceutical
Sciences in Copenhagen. Professor Mitsch, 56, is a professor
of natural resources and environmental science and director
of the Olentangy River Wetland Research Park at The Ohio

EPA
: Aquatic Ecosystems Research Applications Requested
Washington,
DC -- To protect the environment from both man-made and
natural disturbances, EPA is seeking applications for
research on the response of ecosystems to major stressors.
An example of a human stressor is the discharge of
pollutants into water; a natural event could be a severe
storm and subsequent flooding. There are two objectives of
this research.
The
first goal is to improve understanding of the resilience of
ecosystems, meaning the amount of disturbance that an
ecosystem can withstand and how long it takes an ecosystem
to recover. The second goal is to use practical insights
from analysis of past thresholds (conditions beyond which
there was an abrupt change in the ecosystem) to develop
adaptive management practices for similar ecosystems to
prevent problems before they occur. This work will help
anticipate and assess future environmental stressors before
their effects can adversely impact people or the
environment.
Applications may be submitted electronically through the new
Federal Funding Opportunities (FedGrants) system (
http://www.fedgrants.gov
). EPA will use this web site to provide the public with an
efficient and simple electronic means to find and apply for
grants. EPA anticipates making 10 awards, each in the range
of $150,000 per year for three years through its Science to
Achieve Results (STAR) program.
Applications must be received by June 22.
To

Mr. Rao needs help
with a fluidized bed reactor:
One of my colleagues designed aerobic
fluidized bed reactor for a sewage treatment plant with a
BOD loading of 6.5 kg/cum day of media. The media is a
spiral media (Fujino spiral) which has 300sqm/cu.m area.
Now I have to commission the plant and show the results.
The supplier of the media claims that
10-20 kg BOD/cu.m day of media volume. Can any media
take such high loading in aerobic fixed film system and
produce above 90% efficiency.
What is the maximum BOD loading allowed
for aerobic FBR for the treatment of sewage - inlet 300mg/l
outlet less than 20mg/l. Can any one suggest the
design criteria for aerobic fluidized bed reactor?
