AnoxKaldnes : Introduces LagoonGuard for Wastewater Treatment

Providence, RI -- AnoxKaldnes, Inc. is proud to announce the creation of a new treatment process for wastewater nitrification in lagoons using their AnoxKaldnes Moving Bed® biofilm reactor (MBBR). The LagoonGuard(TM) as it is called, provides a cost-effective, simple way to upgrade your lagoon treatment system by retrofitting your existing lagoons.

Most recently LagoonGuard was installed into a city with ammonia limits and cold weather nitrification issues. New effluent discharge standards required the city to meet ammonia limits year round. The city operated a three cell treatment plant and the wastewater temperatures are low less than 7oC /45oF during winter making it impossible to nitrify on a consistent basis. The city could either abandon the existing system and build a new activated sludge plant at a very high cost or could use what they already had and install an AnoxKaldnes MBBR LagoonGuard process to meet the nitrification limits at a much lower cost. They chose LagoonGuard.

The basis of the LagoonGuard process is the thousands of polyethylene carrier elements that provide a home for a vast, highly active bacteria culture. These elements are kept in constant motion throughout the entire volume of the wastewater by our specially designed aeration system and sieves, resulting in uniform, highly effective treatment.

The LagoonGuard setup consists of two process flow trains of two reactors in series retrofitted from the existing lagoons. Influent wastewater to the city’s WWTP flows into the first and second pond cells for BOD treatment and effluent from the second cell flows directly into the new LagoonGuard treatment tank. The two-stage system removes any BOD in the wastewater and nitrifies all of the ammonia contained in it. The LagoonGuard alternative requires minimal operator attention and minimal space. An activated sludge plant was estimated to cost 50% more than the MBBR system.

LUM : Tracing The Centrifugal Separation Of Fine-Particle Slurries

Medford, MA -- The new subsidiary of L.U.M. GmbH, Germany, will report on the characterization of the separation behaviour of fine grained particle dispersions in centrifuges during the conference program of the 18th Annual AFS Conference and Exposition co-hosted with American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

18th Annual AFS Conference and Exposition to be held in Atlanta GA, April 10-13, 2005 offers a unique venue where experts from academia, industry, and others concerned with filtration and separation processes meet and engage in technical presentations/discussions in oral and poster sessions, and get updated on the latest equipment and technology on filtration and separation at a major exposition.

http://www.afssociety.org/conferences/conferences.htm

Scope of oral presentation
Multisample analytical batch centrifugation with optical detection proved to be a versatile tool for the characterization of the separation of fine grained materials. This holds for information on the type of sedimentation behaviour (free sedimentation of individual particles, hindered settling, zone settling), on the sedimentation velocity distribution inside the centrate and on the packing, compression and elasticity behaviour, on the nature of particle interactions and the degree of flocculation as well.

The investigations were complemented by centrifugation with manometric detection and with a disk centrifuge, investigations carried out at the Institute of Mechanical Process Engineering and Mechanics, University of Karlsruhe (TH), Germany.

Florida : USFilter To Provide Extended Aeration WWTP

WARRENDALE, PA -- USFilter has been selected to provide a more than $1million extended aeration wastewater treatment plant in Collier County, Florida. The plant is one of many additions planned for 5,000 acres of tomato patches and farmland in the county, just east of Naples.

A partnership between Ave Maria University creator and Domino's Pizza founder Tom Monaghan and Barron Collier Companies, a major southwest Florida real estate and agricultural company, is providing funding for a new campus for the university as well as a whole new town called Ave Maria. The university is expected to draw as many as 24,000 additional residents to an area that has been known primarily for agriculture.

CH2M Hill Constructors, Inc., the design/builder for the water and wastewater treatment plants, contracted with USFilter Davco Products to provide and install the wastewater plant and two Gravisand(R) filtration systems for effluent polishing. USFilter will also install an additional clarifier to be used as a back up and to serve as the basis for another full biological plant during an expansion phase.

"We're excited to be part of the development of this new town and its future growth," said Florida Operations Manager Don Klose of CH2M Hill Constructors. The water and wastewater treatment plants will serve campus-related facilities as well as residential units, retail stores, medical facilities, hotels, public schools and parks."

The wastewater treatment plant effluent will be reused for golf course and common area irrigation.

USFilter Corporation, a Siemens company, delivers cost-effective, reliable water and wastewater treatment systems and services to municipal, industrial, commercial and institutional customers worldwide. USFilter is part of Siemens' Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S), which provides innovative solutions and services designed to improve competitiveness in processing and manufacturing industries and in infrastructure.

BaySaver Stormwater System : Now NJCAT Approved

Mount Airy, MD -- BaySaver Technologies, the manufacturer of the BaySaver Stormwater Treatment System, is now New Jersey Corporation for Advanced Technology (NJCAT) verified, according to a recent company press release.

The verification shows that the BaySaver Stormwater Treatment System meets all federally mandated regulations set by Phase I and II of the Clean Water Act Stormwater Program, where municipalities are required to remove pollutants such as trash, oils and sediments in addition to providing the best value per treated CFS in the industry.

"The (NJCAT) is a private/public partnership that pools the best talents and diverse resources of business and industry, entrepreneurs, university research centers, utilities and government to promote the development and commercialization of exciting, new energy and environmental technologies," said BaySaver president Tom Pank.

Operations director Austin Meyermann added, "Programs such as this give confidence to the market that the BaySaver Separation System can meet strict performance criteria. We are very pleased to receive third-party verification by NJCAT. This step was an important precursor to NJDEP certification, which will be issued by the end of the month."

The BaySaver separation system makes meeting stormwater treatment regulations convenient and cost effective. It's engineered to strict stormwater standards—yet, its design keeps it highly affordable, and easy to spec, install and maintain. The systems are customizable to project site conditions, great for use in municipal retrofit situations, and allow engineers to avoid losing the valuable acreage necessary to support other types of BMPs.

Driven by gravity, stormwater flow enters a primary manhole for initial separation. The flow is then treated a second time in an off-line storage manhole, where oils, fine suspended solids, and floatables are collected. Since the water flow is regulated into the secondary manhole, re-suspension risk is minimal during higher flows. In addition, inspectors and maintenance contractors can gain unobstructed access to the bottom of the manholes—resulting in more efficient maintenance and lower costs.

Mr. Chaudhari needs help flaring off biogas:

We would like to flare a biogas (methane 50 - 55 % + moisture 1 - 2 % + H2S 2- 3% + balance is CO2 all in % v/v) generated in an anaerobic digestor.

We are discussing open flare verses enclosed flares. Does anybody have experience or comments on open or enclosed flares particularly in USA according to current practices.

I would like to have more understanding of pros and cons for these two options.

Mr. Summey wants help with some test methods:

We are getting a new monitoring requirement and if anyone knows how to test for:

1)  D-BHC
2)  a-Endosulfan
3)  Total Recoverable Copper

I looked up the methods a outside lab did on these tests and they used Method 9036 for D-BHC and a-Edosulfan, but I couldn't find it in Standard Methods. I have no idea where to find the method for the total recoverable copper. Any help would be appreciated.  (Click here to post a reply)
