USA : More Than 2000 Wastewater Projects in Planning & Construction

At a time when construction is in the doldrums in many industry sectors, the municipal wastewater treatment segment is booming. Over 2,000 projects are being tracked in the online McIlvaine publication, U.S. Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facilities and People.

Projects are in three categories: new plants, expansions of existing plants, and upgrades of processes at existing plants. In order to keep pace with increasing population and to supply sewage treatment to areas which currently have only individual septic systems, new plants with a capacity of over 900 million gallons/day (MGD) are in some form of planning or construction. An even larger number of plants are expanding to meet future needs of their service area.

The biggest reason for the boom is the upgrading of processes. New rules relative to the disposal of biosolids (sludge) are a driving force in the construction of sludge drying, incineration, and other solids treatment processes. Odor control is another big driving force. Scrubbers and biofilter systems are being installed at lift stations, headworks, dewatering facilities, and other areas. Covers and other modifications are being made to clarifiers and tanks.

Substantial investment is being made to upgrade the quality of discharges to waterways, lakes and oceans. Secondary treatment is being added to facilities with only primary treatment. Tertiary treatment is being added to some facilities which presently only operate secondary treatment processes. Another driving force is the need for reclaimed wastewater. Many areas of the U.S. are in need of additional fresh water sources. Reclaimed wastewater can be used for golf courses, lawns, and other applications where lower water quality is acceptable. New concepts such as sewer mining are also starting to appear. In this case plants needing a water source can withdraw raw sewage from nearby sewer pipes, separate the liquid, and return the solids to the sewer pipe. With processes such as reverse osmosis and membrane separation high purity water can be produced from sewage.

Project activity is unequally distributed across the country. Areas of high population growth in large measure coincide with areas in need of additional fresh water sources. California, other states in the west and southwest, and Florida have the largest number of projects underway.

Mr. Lee is looking for settling aids for wastewater:

I'm looking for better options to aid settlements of suspended solids in process tanks. I'm looking to treat 50m3 of wastewater in a process tank. The components in the wastewater are gelatin, polymer, silver, emulsion, dye. I'm now using coagulant and polymer to do the job but they aren't efficient enough.

Mr. Thomas needs help with FOG removal:

We are looking for the available Fats, Oil, and Grease (FOG) removal treatment technologies currently available?

Most industrial facilities in our jurisdiction are utilizing Oil & Grease Interceptors, which are creating a tremendous H2S gas problems within their private collection lines as well as in the City's public lines.

I am also interested in Oil and Grease Interceptor sizing criteria formulas, currently being used.
