Minneapolis gets safer drinking water...

B&V Designs Largest UF Membrane Project In North America

May 22, 2002 -- Black & Veatch announced today that it has received notice to proceed with design of the largest ultrafiltration (UF) membrane project in North America by retrofitting the Minneapolis Water Works (MWW) Columbia Heights Filtration Plant. Black & Veatch will also evaluate pretreatment alternatives and provide on-site construction, training and start-up services.

The unique facility will process a maximum of 70 million gallons per day. Upon completion, it will improve filtration well beyond regulatory requirements and consistently yield low turbidity filtered water and high log removal of microbial contaminants, such as viruses. All of these elements will result in safer water for the citizens of Minneapolis.

“Minneapolis is a leader among the increasing number of communities that are updating their aging water systems. Portions of the Columbia Heights plant have been in operation for nearly 90 years,” said Black & Veatch Project Manager Chad Hill, who is based in the company's Minneapolis office. “Black & Veatch is pleased to assist MWW in modernizing its infrastructure and providing Minneapolis with the safest drinking water possible.”

Ultrafiltration has become an integral part of the trend in updating and upgrading facilities and processes. While UF has historically been employed for smaller systems, Black & Veatch has successfully tailored the technology for application at larger operations such as Minneapolis. Black & Veatch is currently designing the world’s largest microfiltration/ultrafiltration facility in Singapore.

Black & Veatch's global water treatment process team is represented on this project by membrane filtration expert Jonathan Pressdee, who relocated from the Untied Kingdom to Minneapolis to work on this highly sophisticated plant, and U.S.-based membrane applications specialist Scott Freeman.

MWW’s new membrane facility is scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2004.

Mr. Gendler want to know more about reverse osmosis:

We are checking several proposals for reverse osmosis  systems. There are two different pretreatment approaches.

The first one using bisulfite and the second uses a carbon filter. I would like to get opinions about the preferred solution.

Ms. Wright needs safety information about H2S:

I am looking for occupational safety stats on primary clarifiers, especially on the hazards of H2S to the worker when cleaning the down clarifier.

Specifically, has this injured or killed any workers? Also how to abate the problem so that the workers can safely enter to clean the clarifier.
