Prize Competition Set
(Alexandria, VA) - More than 25 high
school students from across the United States will compete in the
U.S. National Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) Competition,
sponsored by the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and ITT
Industries, on May 30 - June 1, at the Harvey Hotel, in Irving,
Texas. The winner receives a five-day all expense paid trip to
Stockholm, Sweden. They will represent the United States at the most
prestigious water environment science research competition in the
world, the International Stockholm Junior Water Prize, during World
Water Week, August 11-15, 2002.
The
public is invited to view exhibits of the students' projects on May
31, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and on June 1, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The Texas representative is 12th grader Douglas Wyatt of Austin with
his project "Effect of UV Irradiation on Untreated Water."
The U.S. National SJWP competition is
being held in conjunction with a two-day Laboratory Specialty
Conference. Both events are hosted by WEF's Member Association the
Water Environment Association of Texas; the Texas Section of the
American Water Works Association; and, the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency - Region 6.
State SJWP winners will be treated to
an evening at the Dallas World Aquarium, and visits to the Circle R
Dude Ranch and Six Flags Over Texas Amusement Park. The competition
culminates when WEF President Jim Clark and Nomination Chair Dr.
Charles Sorber, University of Texas at Austin, announces the winner
in an awards luncheon at 12:00 noon on June 1.
The International SJWP was created in
1995 to engage, encourage, and support the interest of young people
throughout the world in water environment and science issues. HRH
Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden is the Patron of the SJWP. The
Stockholm International Water Institute facilitates the
international competition, also sponsored by ITT Industries. The
junior competition was designed to complement the Stockholm Water
Prize, considered by water quality professionals to be the Nobel
Prize for water environment science research. U. S. representatives
won the competition in 1997 and 2000.

"Combines
Performance with Ruggedness"
Hach
Introduces New DR/2400 Portable Spectrophotometer
Loveland, Colorado, May 2002 — Hach
Company announces the new DR/2400 Portable Spectrophotometer, the
only spectrophotometer designed for the water analysis industry that
combines advanced optics; comprehensive testing and data management
capabilities; simplified, touch-screen operation; and complete
portability.
Users
benefit from a high performance optical system that boasts
specifications typical of less-versatile laboratory units. A unique
touch-screen user interface makes it easy to access more than 130
direct-reading tests and navigation through all analytical
functions. Operators use battery or line power to put this powerful
colorimetric analysis system to work anywhere throughout the
process, in the field, or in the lab.
Automatic wavelength calibration and
wavelength selection further simplify on-site analysis. The DR/2400
Portable Spectrophotometer identifies and logs up to 1000 data
points for download via serial and parallel ports. It is available
alone or as part of a complete portable laboratory including all
apparatus and reagents for common water quality tests.
The new instrument will be available
in July, 2002.

Minneapolis
gets safer drinking water...
B&V Designs Largest UF Membrane
Project In North America
May 22, 2002 -- Black & Veatch
announced today that it has received notice to proceed with design
of the largest ultrafiltration (UF) membrane project in North
America by retrofitting the Minneapolis Water Works (MWW) Columbia
Heights Filtration Plant. Black & Veatch will also evaluate
pretreatment alternatives and provide on-site construction, training
and start-up services.
The unique facility will process a
maximum of 70 million gallons per day. Upon completion, it will
improve filtration well beyond regulatory requirements and
consistently yield low turbidity filtered water and high log removal
of microbial contaminants, such as viruses. All of these elements
will result in safer water for the citizens of Minneapolis.
“Minneapolis is a leader among the
increasing number of communities that are updating their aging water
systems. Portions of the Columbia Heights plant have been in
operation for nearly 90 years,” said Black & Veatch Project
Manager Chad Hill, who is based in the company's Minneapolis office.
“Black & Veatch is pleased to assist MWW in modernizing its
infrastructure and providing Minneapolis with the safest drinking
water possible.”
Ultrafiltration has become an
integral part of the trend in updating and upgrading facilities and
processes. While UF has historically been employed for smaller
systems, Black & Veatch has successfully tailored the technology
for application at larger operations such as Minneapolis. Black
& Veatch is currently designing the world’s largest
microfiltration/ultrafiltration facility in Singapore.
Black & Veatch's global water
treatment process team is represented on this project by membrane
filtration expert Jonathan Pressdee, who relocated from the Untied
Kingdom to Minneapolis to work on this highly sophisticated plant,
and U.S.-based membrane applications specialist Scott Freeman.
MWW’s new membrane facility is
scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2004.

Mr. Gendler want to know more about
reverse osmosis:
We are checking
several proposals for reverse osmosis systems. There are two
different pretreatment approaches.
The first one using
bisulfite and the second uses a carbon filter. I would like to get
opinions about the preferred solution.

I am looking for
occupational safety stats on primary clarifiers, especially on the
hazards of H2S to the worker when cleaning the down clarifier.
Specifically, has this
injured or killed any workers? Also how to abate the problem so that
the workers can safely enter to clean the clarifier.
