EPA : Clean Water Fund Annual Report

Washington, DC -- EPA is releasing its 2004 annual report on the Clean Water State Revolving Fund highlighting program activities and successes through the past 15 years. The fund is the largest federal funding program for water infrastructure projects across the country. The Proven Integrity and Performance report provides an overview of the fund, describes its financial status and economic and environmental performance, and discusses new directions for the future.

Since it was created in 1988, the fund has provided low-interest loans targeting a wide range of projects in areas like wastewater treatment, non-point source pollution control, estuary management, and a host of projects focusing on water quality.

The report provides an in-depth look at how the fund operates and describes projects it has financed that help protect and improve the nation's water quality. This first report established a system for reporting for long into the future. To expand use of the fund to support a sustainable nationwide water infrastructure, the agency hopes that the successes the report documents will attract new borrowers to the program.

You can view and download the report at: http://www.epa.gov/owmitnet/cwfinance/cwsrf/

Gould : Pump Handles Corrosive & Abrasive Slurries

Seneca Falls, NY -- Goulds Pumps, one of the fluid brands of ITT Industries, is offering the Model JC, a medium-duty slurry pump for handling a multitude of industrial and wastewater applications including waste sludge, clay and sand slurries, carbon slurries, wet scrubber systems, lime mud, paper mill wastes and other abrasive and / or corrosive services where process pumps aren't up to the task.

The JC is designed with service life enhancing features such as extra thick wet end components for extended wear life, a heavy duty power end, and a replaceable wear liner which reduces maintenance costs. The impeller design allows for external impeller clearance adjustment, which maintains maximum efficiency.

The line features maximum parts interchangeability with just five power ends used for all models. There is a sealing choice of packing, mechanical or dynamic seals. Fifteen sizes with a wide range of materials and configurations are available. The JC offers capacities to 7,000 GPM (1,600mі/h), heads to 240 feet (73 m), temperatures to 250° F (120°C), pressures to 127 PSIG (876 kPa) and handles spherical solids to 2.25 inches (57 mm).

For additional information on the model JC visit www.gouldspumps.com or call 1-800-734-PUMP and ask for Bulletin B201-1.

Potable : New Packaged Drinking Water Treatment System

WARRENDALE, PA -- USFilter announces its next generation packaged treatment unit--the Trident HS system. A multi-barrier approach, the process combines two-stage clarification, filtration and UV disinfection into a single packaged system.

At the heart of the Trident HS design is the Microfloc Trident(R) packaged treatment technology consisting of adsorption clarification and mixed media filtration. An integrated, specialized tube clarifier for removal of gross solids and downstream UV disinfection system for final effluent treatment surround the process, completing the Trident HS design. Collectively the unit offers at least 4-log reduction credit for Cryptosporidium and Giardia.

"Current and upcoming regulations are requiring plant operators to do better," said USFilter Vice President Les Uhlmeyer. "We have demonstrated 60-70% removal of total organic carbon (TOC), which allows all plants to comply with the Long Term 1 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule. The multi-barrier approach with two-stage clarification, filtration and UV disinfection will ensure compliance for plants as future rules come into effect."

An added benefit of the system is a more than one-half reduction of waste volume. Side-by-side testing has confirmed the reduction, which translates to plant operating cost savings. Improved operating performance and reduced waste may also be realized by existing packaged clarifier-filter systems with a retrofit system offered by USFilter.

While the unit is ideally suited for variable quality or high solids applications, high quality water supplies also benefit from the design. A high steady state solids concentration in the tube clarifier section absorbs fluctuations in water quality and increases floc formation efficiency. Treatment plants dosing enhanced coagulation rates or powder activated carbon will obtain improved downstream operating efficiency as the majority of solids are captured in the tube clarifier section.

Pre-engineered designs for treatment rates of 350 to 1,400 gpm per unit are available, with multiple units provided for higher flow rates. The modular design allows for incremental expansion of treatment systems.

USFilter Corporation, a Siemens company, delivers cost-effective, reliable water and wastewater treatment systems and services to municipal, industrial, commercial and institutional customers worldwide.

Mr. Salsman wants to calculate headloss in a channel:

Has anyone come across a good equation to find headloss in open channel bends? I am looking for an equation to find headloss in a 90 degree bend in an open concrete rectangular channel.

I have been looking and it is surprisingly difficult to find.  Anyone have any ideas?  (Click here to post a reply)
