$5M Contract

ITT Industries Wins Contract for Austrian WWTP

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ITT Industries Inc. (NYSE: ITT) announced today that it has won a contract to supply pumps, mixers and aeration equipment for the main wastewater treatment plant in the city of Vienna, Austria. The plant is currently undergoing expansion. The ITT Industries portion of the contract is worth US$5 million. ITT Industries' Flygt Austria will act as the contract administrator, and the Sanitaire unit will take responsibility for the project management.

"The Vienna project is another great example of how ITT Industries can offer system solutions for wastewater treatment projects around the world," said Bob Ayers, President of ITT Industries' Fluid Technology business. "Together, our Flygt and Sanitaire units were able to meet and exceed all the customer requirements of this large project."

In order to handle the increase of sewage connections, the city of Vienna is expanding its main wastewater treatment plant by 60 percent, and a new biological treatment process is being installed. A total of 36,000 Sanitaire diffusers and 120 Flygt mixers will be used in 15 treatment tanks. The contract also includes the supply of the complete piping system inside the tanks, mixer guide bars and project management services. The lead contractor, Integral, awarded the project to ITT Flygt as it was the only company capable of meeting the oxygen transfer and fluid dynamic demands set by the local water authority in combination with an extended lifetime guarantee.

Installation will begin during 2003. Start up of the new biological treatment process is scheduled for the end of 2005.

ITT Industries, Inc. ( http://www.itt.com/ ) supplies advanced technology products and services in key markets including: electronic interconnects and switches; defense communication, opto-electronics, information technology and services; fluid and water management and other specialty products. Headquartered in White Plains, NY, the company generated $4.7 billion in 2001 sales.

Malcolm Pirnie Wins Ground Water Supply Award

Lansing, MI, November 14, 2002 - The National Ground Water Association (NGWA) has recognized environmental firm Malcolm Pirnie, Inc., for its outstanding work on the Sanctuary Springs water supply development project for Nestle Waters of North America, Inc. (NWNA). This prestigious award recognizes outstanding engineering and contractor innovation in the area of supplying ground water. The 2002 Outstanding Project in Ground Water Supply Award will be presented to the firm at the NGWA Ground Water Expo in Las Vegas on December 9.

Charged with developing a new spring source for Nestle Waters of North America (NWNA) bottled water in Michigan, Project Manager Shane McDonald and his project team used an innovative "whole-watershed" strategy to identify and develop the ideally suited Sanctuary Springs location. Malcolm Pirnie exceeded State regulatory requirements, investigating potential impacts of withdrawal on water bodies and water users by simulating long-term effects of spring development, an approach to water supply never before used in Michigan.

Not only does this project meet present needs, but, according to Brendan O'Rourke of NWNA, "This program will help us in managing the Sanctuary Springs site in an environmentally sound manner and will also expand understanding of regional water resources."

Clarifiers and Centrifuges

Market for Sedimentation Equipment Will Exceed $5B by 2007

Northbrook, IL -- The world market for centrifuges, clarifiers, dissolved air flotation systems, and hydrocyclones will grow from just over $4 billion in 2002 to just under $5 billion in 2006 and by 2007 will be comfortably over the $5 billion mark. This is the forecast provided by the McIlvaine Company in the continually updated online report Sedimentation & Centrifugation World Markets.

Clarifiers and thickeners will generate the most revenues. These gravity settling devices are widely used. They are found in every country from Australian mines to Finnish sewage treatment plants. The second largest equipment category is the disc centrifuge that is used as a dairy separator as well as a purifier of pharmaceuticals, wine, and many other products. Third on the list is the decanter centrifuge. It dewaters sewage sludge and coal fines as well as food products.

Fourth place belongs to the miscellaneous centrifuge segment. Basket and pusher centrifuges are widely used in the chemical industry and are used in sugar and other food processing applications as well. In fifth place is the dissolved air flotation (DAF) system. This device is replacing sand filters in municipal drinking water purification as well as cleaning wastewater in chicken processing plants and drive-in car washes. Last on the list with just 13% of the market is the hydrocyclone which is used in minerals processing and power plant scrubber wastewater cleaning.

The clarifier market became more concentrated with GL&V purchasing first Dorr Oliver and then Eimco. The resultant combination has a good share of the mining market. But USFilter is the leader in clarifiers in the municipal segment. Alfa Laval is the leader in both the decanter and disc centrifuge category followed GEA Westfalia who is second in both categories. Because of the high speed and demanding manufacturing requirements there is less Asian competition in centrifuges than in the other devices. The centrifuge market is dominated by U.S. European and Japanese manufacturers. In contrast there are clarifier and DAF suppliers in virtually every country.

Municipal wastewater is now the largest application for sedimentation and centrifugation equipment followed by the mining and food industries. However by 2006 the food industry will be the largest segment. The pharmaceutical industry is one of the smaller segments with projected 2003 revenues of $236 million but it is the highest growth segment. In 2006 projected revenues are $288 million. This is in part due to the critical role that disc separators play in the production of biotechnology products.

There will be a substantial increase in the purchase of clarifiers/thickeners and hydrocyclones by U.S. power plants as they install flue gas desulfurization systems over the next eight years. The biggest growth market, however, will be China which is making huge investments to build wastewater treatment plants. At the same time it is also experiencing growth in the basic industries which are also major users of sedimentation and centrifugation equipment.

Saving Millions of Gallons

Reuse System Recovers Water for Beverage Manufacturer

Coconut Creek, FL – November 13, 2002– Water Management Group, Inc. has supplied a low-cost, membrane process system for Shasta Corporation’s Miami Bottling facility for the purpose of recovering thousands of gallons of process water that would otherwise be discharged to the city sewer system. The Miami Bottling facility had been exceeding its permittable discharge limits and, as a result, been paying thousands of dollars in fees to the Miami-Dade Sewer Authority.

The Water Management Group (WMG) “Reuse” system is designed to recover approximately 75% of previously treated water used for bottling soft drinks and bottled water products. For this facility, the cost of the equipment will be repaid in less than a year due to the cash savings that would have otherwise been spent on discharge fees.

Additional savings come from the reuse of the product water from the WMG “Reuse” system. The water quality produced by the WMG system is so good that it is reused in the facility in several ways resulting in additional savings for Shasta.

“The system is working well and dramatically reduced the outbound flow” according to Bill Berry, Director of Operations at Beverage Corporation International, the Miami division of Shasta Corp.

“We are very pleased to have the opportunity to demonstrate that many beverage bottling companies, with similar circumstances, may not need to discharge huge amounts of “good” quality water to city sewer and pay thousands of dollars in fees” said Jeff Dunn, Vice President of WMG. “The water quality from the “Reuse” system is so good that the recovered water can be reused for process water and/or plant utilities.”

The Water Management Group, Inc. (WMG) provides a wide range of outsourced technical services and equipment for industrial, commercial and municipal clients. Staffed with highly skilled service technicians, applications and membrane process design professionals, WMG has the capability to handle all of the technical challenges that membrane process systems may present.

Mr. Thomas needs help with leachate:

I am currently using C02 to adjust the pH of a landfill leachate prior to sanitary sewer disposal. We are experiencing problems with the formation of calcium carbonate in this process.

We have used sulphuric acid in the past to accomplish the same task, but this put our sulphate levels out of compliance.  Can anyone suggest an alternate method of pH adjustment that will be as effective as our current system?.
