Earth Tech Wins Water Treatment Contract in Scotland
------------------------------------------------------------
LONG BEACH, Calif., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Earth Tech, a unit
of Tyco Flow Control, today announced that the North of Scotland
Water Authority (NoSWA) has selected Earth Tech to design,
construct and commission a new Inverness 10 MGD (34Ml/d) water
treatment plant and supply system. The $20 million (14 million
pounds sterling) contract includes a new water treatment plant,
service reservoir and treated water trunk main. The new plant
will remove color and provide a physical barrier to cryptosporidium
in a one-step process.
"This project illustrates Earth Tech's strong capabilities to meet
the growing need for water treatment and management around the
world," according to Diane C. Creel, President of Earth Tech.
"The chosen solution demonstrates Earth Tech's ability to create
innovative and cost effective engineering and process solutions."
Earth Tech, which was chosen over three other leading process
contractors, worked in partnership with NoSWA to determine the
best choice of process. Extensive pilot trials were conducted to
establish that chemical dosing upstream of ultra filtration was
the optimum sequence of treatment. The application that was
chosen uses leading-edge technology and will be the first
of its kind in the United Kingdom.
"NoSWA has to comply with increasingly stringent legislation,
and to meet conditions prevailing in this particular region of
Scotland, Earth Tech is pleased to be able to assist them," said
Kim Early, President of Earth Tech's Global Water Management.
ABOUT EARTH TECH
Earth Tech is an international provider of global water management,
and engineering and environmental services. It is a $1 billion
company headquartered in Long Beach, CA, which employs 7,000
people in more than 150 offices throughout the world. For more

PennFuture Says: 'Lame Duck Legislature Launches Attack on Clean Water'
------------------------------------------------------------
HARRISBURG, Pa., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- As the Pennsylvania
Legislature returns Monday to finish its term with a lame duck
session, Citizens for Pennsylvania's Future (PennFuture) warned
that members of the House Environmental Resources and Energy
Committee are poised to destroy clean water protections. This
week, the committee will consider HB 1636, a bill that would
gut the state's Special Protection Waters Program. That program
currently requires polluters and developers to take extra
measures to protect the water quality of exceptional value and
high quality streams.
"This is a blatant attempt by a few special interests to destroy
the laws requiring protections and special care in the watersheds
of our best streams," said John Hanger, PennFuture's President
and CEO. "The special interests are claiming they have the
exclusive right to use these streams for their own profit --
even at the expense of the public's right to clean water and the
long-term economic health of our rural communities."
HB 1636, sponsored by Rep. Jim Lynch (R) of Warren County,
would restrict the state's ability to protect the streams by
removing their legal protection as a designated use. That
protection requires the Department of Environmental Protection
to protect the stream's water quality at existing levels by
allowing no pollution to degrade the stream.
"Without the legal protection for exceptional value and high
quality streams, we stand to lose our premier natural assets --
our best streams," said Hanger. "These streams already bring
in more than $1 billion to our economy through recreation and
tourism, and they are vital to Pennsylvania's economic future.
We call on the members of House Environmental Resources and
Energy Committee to firmly resist the shortsighted desires and
political influence of a few irresponsible special interests to
increase their profits at the expense of Pennsylvania's future
prosperity.
"Pennsylvania has already been sanctioned by the courts for
their breach of the Clean Water Act, when the state attempted
a similar end run around the law previously," added Hanger.
"I beg the legislature not to end this session by adding another
attempt to violate federal law to its record," concluded
Hanger.
PennFuture, which has offices in Harrisburg, Philadelphia and
Pittsburgh, is a statewide public interest membership organization
that advances policies to protect and improve the state's
environment and economy. PennFuture's activities include
litigating cases before regulatory bodies and in local,
state and federal courts, advocating and advancing legislative
action on a state and federal level, public education and
assisting citizens in public advocacy.

Use Your Cellular Phone to Access WTP Information
------------------------------------------------------------
Freedom! You do not longer need to have access to a computer.
Your cellular phone provides you with the information you want.
You can even adjust parameters.
Sonton Teknologi AS announces a new way of operating water &
waste water plants from a WAP cellular phone. The WAP (wireless
application protocol) solution is developed to fully integrate
with the Citect SCADA package, but may also be used for other
types of systems.
The solution provides full mobility to the operator. When an
alarm occurs, a message is sent to the operators mobile
telephone. The operator can then access the plants data
from a cellular phone making it possible to read and adjust
setpoints, search and read signals etc.
"The best thing about this solution is freedom, freedom to see
whatever you want wherever you are. You no longer need to
find a PC to get an overview of the plants state. Your WAP
mobile phone provides that".

GLI/Manning Model VSR Stationary Water/Wastewater Sampler
------------------------------------------------------------
GLI/Manning Model VSR stationary samplers employ 3/8-inch ID
or 5/8-inch ID vacuum pumps to provide suction lift. These
samplers have few moving parts and all critical components
are rated for thousands of operations. Since these samplers
utilize vacuum pumps, labor and spare parts costs are minimized
because they don't require regularly scheduled replacement of
consumable parts such as peristaltic pump tubing.
VST samplers provide accuracy and repeatability of sample
volumes within 0.5% of pre-set volume. The optional refrigerator
is durable and corrosion resistant. Capable of maintaining
samples at the EPA recommended 4*C even in high ambient
temperatures, this industrial-grade refrigerator is built to
handle the toughest environments.

Mr. McGrath needs help with disposal of calcium:
Does anyone know of research to reuse the calcium produced
by a municipal lime softening water plant? It seems to me
there should be something other than land application.

Mr. McFarlane needs info on oil/water separator:
I am trying to design a wastewater treatment system for
the motor vehicle repair shop. The concern is to ensure
that oil/grease is not discharge as part of the washdown
waste water from our vehicle washing facilities.
Can you supply a simple process flow diagram and the
possible associated equipment that will be necessary for
this process. What is the typical cost of installing and
maintaining such a system?
Thanks,
Neville McFarlane
