CAN YOU HELP US? WE NEED YOUR OPINION ABOUT A NEW FEATURE!
We are trying out a new feature, an on-the-fly translator to
translate our web pages into either, French, German or Spanish.
What this service does is take a web page as you see it and
grab the text from the page, translates it from English to
another language and re-inserts the text back into the same
web page. It's quite amazing and we think it might help
some of our visitors understand and navigate our web site
better.
We kindly ask our members who speak or read these languages
to try out this feature on some demo pages we have set up on
our sister web site, Powder and Bulk Dot Com. You can view
them by going to:
Dust Collectors Category, Bridge Page
http://www.powderandbulk.com/air/dustcollectors1.htm
Dust Collectors Links Page
http://www.powderandbulk.com/air/dustcollectors.htm
The Translator button is located at the bottom of the page in
the case of the two links pages on dust collectors and in the
navigation bar on the right for the newsletter archive page.
Tell us what you think about this technology by sending me
an email at: jtaylor@waterandwastewater.com
EARLY PUBLICATION
We are sending this first newsletter out a bit early this
week as we will be away attending a trade show in Atlanta.
Our normal dispatch will be mid-week with the issue for the
following week.
Thanks, Joe Taylor

New High-Output UV System Introduced
------------------------------------------------------------
As larger and larger wastewater plants add ultraviolet
disinfection, the demand for a energy efficient ultraviolet
system is of great interest. Infilco Degremont, Inc. introduced
the new Aquaray® 40 HOVLS (High Output Vertical Lamp System).
The lamp quantities are significantly less than those employed
on the low pressure, low intensity systems. They run at much
lower temperatures, use less energy, and reduce the quartz
jacket fouling associated with medium pressure, high intensity
systems.
In addition to utilizing these latest lamp developments, the
Aquaray 40 HOVLS system employs many other operational benefits
and labor saving features.
Aquaray™ HLS Ultraviolet System For the smaller plant with
secondary and tertiary effluent flows up to 4 MGD, the new
Infilco Degremont Aquaray™ HLS ultraviolet system can be
effectively used to disinfect wastewater. The new horizontal
open channel UV systems feature energy efficient electronic
ballasts, lightweight UV lamp modules, standard UL labeled
control enclosures, and a modular design that allows for
easy design, installation and operation.

25,000 U.S. Companies Have It - Few People Know What It Is
------------------------------------------------------------
October 6,1999 (INB) -- U.S. companies are increasingly
recognizing the need to establish ISO 9000 systems. At
present, approximately 1 in 500 U.S. businesses are
registered to ISO 9000. The lengthy list is comprised of
many well-known national firms. It includes Ford Motor
Company, AT&T, Hewlett-Packard, Alcoa, and Federal Express
as well as numerous medium to small enterprises.
Surprisingly, the majority of people do not know what ISO
is, much less that these companies have achieved
registration.
ISO 9000 is a management system designed to help companies
produce consistent products and services. There are over
25,000 U.S. companies, and over 270,000 companies worldwide
registered to ISO. Some companies will only do business with
firms that are ISO registered. ISO registration has also
become a requirement for many government contracts. ISO is
the only international standard in the marketplace today.
As ISO has become more popular, many companies have attained
ISO 9000 registration for cost savings and prestige.
According to a survey conducted in conjunction with Dun &
Bradstreet, cost savings range from thousands of dollars per
year to several hundred thousand dollars per year.
Companies often spend thousands to millions of dollars to
become registered. Registration to ISO 9000 is evidence that
these companies are committed to increasing quality,
reducing costs and providing a better product or service.
ISORegistered.com <http://www.ISORegistered.com>
was created
to provide valuable information to quality professionals and
build public awareness about ISO. It is the only worldwide
directory specifically designed and developed to help
registered companies promote their registration, products
and services and to provide a one-stop information resource
on ISO and related standards.
Marci Stell, Marketing Manager for ISORegistered.com, Inc.,
explains ISORegistered.com's main goals: "Our objective is
to contribute timely, useful information about ISO-related
news, as well as guidance to quality professionals on a
constant basis. On even terms, we strive to provide
registered firms with the most highly promoted low-cost
method for marketing their certification, products and
services."

New Radium Removal, Ground Water Treatment Facility
------------------------------------------------------------
Layne Christensen Company announced that its Integrated
Groundwater Services (IGS) division has been awarded a
$2.36 million contract for the design and construction of
two groundwater treatment facilities for the City of Vineland,
New Jersey. This contract will result in the construction of
a 1,400 gpm radium removal facility at Vineland's Well 13 and
a 2,000 gpm facility for removal of both radium and nitrates
at Well 12. Pilot testing to finalize design parameters for
these systems is underway and completion of both facilities
is scheduled for the summer of 2000. Vineland elected to
pursue these projects on a design-build basis due to substantial
time savings over more standard project delivery methods.
Recent water quality testing by the State of New Jersey
detected elevated levels of Radium-224 in numerous wells in
southern and central New Jersey. Radium-224 was not previously
detected in water quality analyses because it has a short
half-life, approximately 3.5 days. Typically, water samples
are held for two weeks or longer prior to testing for
radionuclides. By this time the concentrations of Radium-224
have dissipated.
The City of Vineland reacted quickly issuing a Request for
Qualifications (RFQ) followed by a Request for Proposals from
selected firms. IGS was selected over 10 other firms responding
to the initial RFQ. This project is the first phase of a program
to treat up to 8 wells for radium. The overall project is
estimated at $7.6 million.
Mike Havener, IGS General Manager stated, "This is the first
design-build water treatment project which Layne Christensen
has been awarded since announcing our new Integrated Groundwater
Services initiative. Layne Christensen's substantial reputation
and distribution network is contributing to an increasing
number of requests for design-build turnkey projects that
incorporate our groundwater product lines."
Layne Christensen provides sophisticated services and related
products for the water supply, mineral exploration, geotechnical
construction and environmental markets.

Mr. Randall is looking for flotation clarifier help:
I'm a technical writer documenting the operation of a flotation
water clarifier. I know that the "inputs" are water with
suspended solids, air, a coagulant and a flocculant.
My question is whether there's an ionic attraction between
the air bubbles and the flocculant particulate? If not,
what makes the particulate float to the surface?

Mr. Ha wants help with combined sewer systems:
Hi This is SangSun Ha a graduate school student majoring in
environmental engineering in South Korea. Nowadays I got some
challenge.
My project concerns with combined sewer system, especially

data for it. I found that almost of the installation of Korean
overflow regulator facilities are malfunction.
My professor let me to seek the developed country's situation.
I.e. the type of regulator facilities in accordance with theirs
flow capacity and maintenance method for those. I knew that
there is mainly three type; fixed, semi-auto, automatic.
Please give me an opportunity to study advanced technology of

Mr Lund needs help with a vegetable oil plant:
I am investigating the water treatment problems for a
vegetable oil plant in northern Africa. The water quality
is very poor and creates great operational problems
(plugging) for heat exchangers and other equipment.
A water treatment system is obviously needed, both for
adjusting the pH and for getting rid of particles, humus etc.
Can anyone help me with an appropriate system, alternatives,
equipment, dimensions etc. The treated water consumption
is approximately 100 m3/hr.
Regards,
Per Lund
