EPA Standards for Arsenic Levels Expected to Change
------------------------------------------------------------

HOBOKEN, N.J., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Excessive arsenic in
drinking water presents a major health hazard to millions of
people in the United States and abroad. Arsenic, a carcinogen,
is known to cause cancer and other serious health problems when
ingested at high levels over time. Fortunately, engineers at
Stevens Institute of Technology have developed leading-edge
technologies that can economically and safely remove arsenic
and other harmful heavy metals from drinking water.

The National Academy of Sciences last year warned that 34 million
Americans are drinking tap water with unacceptable arsenic
levels. Currently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
is poised to significantly change the standards for arsenic in
U.S. drinking water by as early as 2001. The expected EPA change
-- from the current standard of 50 parts per billion down to
possibly as low as 10, 5 or even 3 ppb -- will have a major
impact on U.S. water treatment plants and individual well owners.
At minimum, the change will likely cost more than $14 billion
overall, according to Tom Curtis, the American Water Works
Association's deputy executive director for governmental
affairs, quoted last month on PBS's The News Hour with Jim
Lehrer (Oct. 6, 2000).

The Center for Environmental Engineering at Stevens Institute
of Technology has created proven, patented technology for safely
and effectively removing arsenic from drinking water. Stevens'
Direct Coprecipitation Filtration process has been successfully
used in the United States for the removal of arsenic from
contaminated groundwater and surface water since 1997. This
technology has been developed and used on a large scale for
water treatment plants and groundwater remediation sites, and
on a low-cost, family-size scale for use in developing countries
with severe arsenic crises such as Bangladesh. Stevens engineers
are also developing treatment technologies for individual wells
such as those typically used in the United States. The EPA
estimates there are approximately 53,000 public water systems
and 23 million private wells in the United States alone.

While a portion of arsenic contamination is the result of
industrial pollution, much of the arsenic in drinking water
around the world and in the U.S. occurs when naturally occurring
arsenic leaches from soil into groundwater. In Bangladesh,
naturally occurring arsenic is threatening the health of as
many as 70 million people who drink well water with high arsenic
content. Besides its work with arsenic on the home front,
Stevens is currently working to help the Bangladeshi government
provide low-cost, family-sized filtration systems to everyone in
that country who needs them. The university is offering to give
the patented technology to the government to help remedy the
crisis.

Overall, efforts to commercialize Stevens-invented technologies
to treat arsenic in drinking water are part of an institutional
direction known as Technogenesis(R). A term trademarked by
Stevens, Technogenesis is defined as "the educational frontier
wherein students, faculty and industry jointly nurture new
technologies from concept to realization."

For more information on Stevens' technologies to treat arsenic
and current plans to commercialize those technologies, contact
Dr. George Korfiatis, founding director of Stevens' Center for
Environmental Engineering at (201) 216-5326.

To view an online map of arsenic concentrations in U.S. groundwater
and link to other sites related to the topics in this news release,

Established in 1870, Stevens offers baccalaureate, master's
and doctoral degrees in engineering, science, computer science,
management and technology management, as well as a baccalaureate
in the humanities and liberal arts. The university has a total
enrollment of about 1,600 undergraduates and 2,400 graduate
students. Additional information may be obtained from its web

Innovative Technologies for Brownfields Cleanup & Redevelopment
------------------------------------------------------------

New EPA Publication Provides Road Map to Understanding New Options

SPRINGFIELD, Va., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Brownfields sites are
abandoned, idled, or under-used industrial and commercial
facilities where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by
real or perceived environmental contamination. Preparing brownfields
sites for productive reuse requires the integration of many
elements -- financial issues, community involvement, liability
considerations, environmental assessment and cleanup, regulatory
requirements, and more -- as well as coordination among many
groups of stakeholders.

Road Map to Understanding Innovative Technology Options for
Brownfields Investigation and Cleanup is primarily targeted at
those stakeholders who will make decisions about brownfields
sites, but who may not be familiar with many of the elements
involved in cleaning up those sites. Its purpose is to promote
innovative site characterization and cleanup technologies that
can speed up the progress of brownfields projects and reduce
the expense they entail.

This publication gives guidance on site assessment and investigation,
cleanup options and cleanup design and implementation. In addition
appendices are included to help stakeholders understand technical
issues and terms related to cleanup:

-Guide to Contaminants Found at Typical Brownfields Sites
-List of Acronyms and Glossary of Key Terms
-List of Brownfields and Technical Support Contacts

The document also includes a CD Tool Kit of Information Resources.
Each of the resources identified can either be viewed or
downloaded directly from the CD, or accessed or ordered online
using links provided on the CD-ROM.

Road Map to Understanding Innovative Technology Options for
Brownfields Investigation and Cleanup, Second Edition is available
from NTIS, call 1-800-553-6847 or 703-605-6000, for $39.50 plus
$5 handling fee, no additional charge for shipping; quote order

Internal Bead Removal Tool Improves Flow
------------------------------------------------------------

Leaving the internal weld bead on an HDPE piping system creates
flow restriction, stimulates blockage and creates excessive
wear through turbulence. Simple calculations show that a 12"
DR 11 pipe system with a 5/16" bead size will restrict the
flow by 12%. And the restriction becomes more severe in smaller
diameter pipes. What engineer or end user would allow that?

Now available for HDPE, Poly Pro, and PVDF piping systems. An
internal bead removal system that's simple and reliable to use.
Leaving the internal weld bead creates flow restriction,
stimulates blockage, creates bacteria entrapment, and increases
pipe wear through turbulence.

The Bead Trimmer heads are available from 3" pipe sizes up to
24". Each Bead Trimmer head is designed to adjust to a range
of ID's per pipe size.

Mr. Bing needs info on iron and manganese removal:

Does anyone have information on how practical it is to remove
Fe and Mn in small concentrations - 0.35ppm and 0.06 ppm in an
ion exchange softener. How significant is the fouling and how
much does it shorten the life of the resin?

Thanks,
