New Video Examines Polluted Urban Runoff
------------------------------------------------------------
Is the water that flows from your tap safe to drink? Are the
fish you buy or catch safe to eat? Can you recreate in nearby
rivers, lakes, or streams without facing serious health hazards?
Residents of towns and cities across America are facing these
questions with greater frequency, as growing populations,
sprawling development, and pollution threaten the purity of our
fresh water supplies.
In an effort to help communities deal with these issues, the
Oregon State University Extension Service has produced a new
video entitled "After the Rain: Urban Runoff."
"This program explores the importance of water, the pressures
our towns and cities are placing on this precious resource, and
ways that individuals can protect local drinking water
supplies,"
says Ron Miner, OSU Extension Service water quality specialist.
"The video should prove useful to anyone who is concerned about
drinking water safety and improving the natural world around
us."
For years, industry and inadequate wastewater treatment plants
were the primary polluters of surface and ground water. They
continue to play a role, but it may surprise you to learn that
individuals are now the main problem.
"Do you drive a car? Have you fertilized your lawn or garden
lately? Do you leave pet waste where it can wash into nearby
streams, storm drains, or ground water?" asks Miner. "Most
people do not understand that these seemingly harmless activities
are polluting our fresh water supplies."
"After the Rain: Urban Runoff" (VTP 029) costs $19.95
(including
shipping) per copy. Send your request and check or money order
payable to Oregon State University to:

New Bioreactor for Speedy Biodegradation of Poultry Wastes
------------------------------------------------------------
A new Bioreactor is installed at a Research and Technology
facility of a large U.S. Poultry company.
TKO is marketing the revolutionary new Bioreactor for waste
water remedeation from Advanced Biological Concepts. The new
and unique approach has been developed to speed the
biodegradation of many forms of waste, including hazardous
and toxic waste.
The surfactants and Bioreactor operate in concert with naturally
occurring microorganisms. It transforms pollutants which are
normally slow to degrade into a form which is avidly consumed
and easily digested by local bacteria without the need for
supplementary fertilizers.
This technology stands in the forefront of this industry, and
is advancing at a rapid rate. We know of no other technologies
using this unique approach in this field.
Features include:
-Output of acceptable discharge levels.
-Super Fast Action. Minutes, not days.
-All Natural Surfactants & Nutrients

US Filter Increases Filtration Possibilities
------------------------------------------------------------
United States Filter Corporation introduces its newest micro-
filtration system, a submerged microfiltration system designed
for very large drinking water applications. The new Memcor
CMF-S continuous microfiltration system was created to compete
in large scale (>20 MGD) surface water treatment plant process
evaluations.
As engineers and owners gain microfiltration experience and
the cost of membranes drops, the trend is to design bigger
and bigger microfiltration plants. But there is a point where
installing large-scale membrane systems is not economical.
The Memcor CMF-S system addresses this situation with a pre-
engineered modular system designed to be submerged into new
or existing open top rectangular steel or concrete tanks.
This Memcor CMF-S microfiltration system provides 6-log
removal of Cryptosporidium and Giardia, easily meeting the
new and future drinking water regulations. The system fits
in 30% less space than other membrane systems, does not
require chemicals, and operates virtually unattended.
The Memcor CMF-S system is a large-scale advancement of the
Memcor CMF microfiltration technology proven in over 700
installations over the last 10 years.
US Filter is a subsidiary of Paris-based Vivendi, the leading
global provider of commercial, industrial, municipal and
residential water and wastewater treatment systems, products

A New Angle on Bar Screens
------------------------------------------------------------
The Enviro-Care Company manufactures the Flo-Screen(TM) , a
unique, patented, stainless steel, reciprocating rake bar
screen that places the bars on a 45° angle to the direction
of liquid flow for increased solids capture efficiency. The
Enviro-Care Flo-Screen has numerous design features that
simplify installation, enhance operating efficiency, and
decrease routine maintenance.
The angle bar design is very efficient at retaining solids.
It presents two faces, front and side, to the liquid flow.
When looking directly at the face of the screen, it appears
to be a solid surface.
In a traditional flat bar screen, the narrow face of the bar
is the only surface available to catch solids. A traditional
screen has approximately 50% air spacing between the bars when
viewed from the front. Like the prow of a ship, the angled
bars cut through the liquid flow, smoothing it and reducing
head loss.
Conventional screens present a flat face to the flow that
induces turbulence and excites suspended solids to find a
way through the bars. This is due to the increased velocity
of the flow as it is forced between the bars. For maximized
solids capture and removal, the angle bars go all the way to
the discharge plate at the top of the rake stroke. No dead
plate is needed above or below the bars that can minimize
solids capture efficiency and allow solids to fall off the
rake.
The Flo-Screen uses a simple hydraulically or electrically
driven ball bearing screw drive to cycle the rake instead of
complex rack and pinion or chain/pulley drives to remove solids
from the bar screen. The extraordinarily simple screw drive
eliminates complex mechanical linkages and reduces the
likelihood of mechanical breakdown. The screw drive and
the rake arm are the only moving parts. The rake positively
contacts the front and side surfaces of the screen bars,
increasing the effective raked area for more solids capture.
The rake has a saw-tooth appearance that dramatically increases
the strength of the rake teeth. The saw-tooth rake also
reduces greasy deposits build-up between the bars and the
need for periodic pressure washing maintenance.
Another innovative feature is that the rake parks at the
bottom of the stroke; catching and removing large submerged
solids that could jam other rake types that hang uselessly
in the air waiting to be cycled. The Flo-Screen rake sits
flat on the bottom of the channel; positively engaged with
the screen bars. No screen ramp or channel bottom notching
modifications are needed. To make installation easy, all
Flo-Screen mounting points are located above the channel.
The rake motor drive, operated by a flexible PLC 7-day
time clock, provides intrinsically safe rake operation
and instant reaction to system overload conditions with
automatic reset. The ergonomically designed control panel
offers easy, at-a-glance confirmation of equipment status
and proper operating conditions.
The Flo-Screen is engineered for long life operation. It
comes with an industry leading 5 year warranty.
The Enviro-Care Company has been using intelligent
technology to manufacture solids separation and handling
systems for fluid processing applications since 1974.
Their unique, patented designs are precision engineered
for high process efficiency and reduced maintenance.

Mr. Xianzhong needs help with valves:
We are a chemical technology corp. well known in China. We
manufacture the products of equipment for the environment
safeguard and contract with the project.
In the equipment and the projects, we need the various valves.
Please send me your catalogs.
We also manufacture the HTA ¨C-series resilient metal-to-metal
seated butterfly valve with torque closed. It is in view of
specific working condition of large-scale pressure-swinging
absorption (PSA) installation. Acting as a right-angle rotary
valve, it is of good shut-off feature, circulation service life
of long term cycle under frequent operating condition, as well
as good bi-directional service function. Besides application
in process control for the large-scale pressure-swinging
absorption installation, it is also widely used in such fields
as petroleum, chemical, electricity and metallurgical industries
etc., and it is a good substitute of gate valve, stop valve,
ball valve and ordinary high-performance butterfly valve.
The HTA-series is the high quality and the low price. We wish
export it via you. If you are interesting cooperation with me,
we should send the catalogs to you.
Best wishes,
Hu Xianzhong
