Free Design Software : New
Version of ROSA Released
Midland,
MI -- To better meet the real-world challenges of industrial
and municipal water purification, FilmTec Corporation, a
subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company, has released version
6.0 of its ROSA (Reverse Osmosis System Analysis) design
software.
ROSA 6.0 continues to offer the
features that best aid water filtration system design and it
incorporates the newest FILMTEC™ seawater and brackish water
elements, the highest quality reverse osmosis (RO) and
nanofiltration (NF) elements available in the world.
Several significant improvements
have been made to the software, which will allow RO and NF
system designers to improve and maintain their operations
more effectively and efficiently.
Among the more notable changes
are the addition of Element Value Analysis (EVA) capability
and the improvement of Temperature Correction Factor (TCF).
EVA allows the user to compare projected system designs to
determine the most economical option during the planning
stages. Once the user specifies the projections to be
compared, the key information is automatically populated in
an EVA spreadsheet for easy analysis. The improvement of TCF
provides more accurate salt rejection and feed pressure
projections. Both capabilities have been engineered to
facilitate the design and implementation of water
purification systems.
In addition, the new version of
ROSA has added a System Design Overview Report along with
improving the Detailed Report. Both reports provide data for
energy and power consumption, osmotic pressure and net
driving pressure; however, the overview report provides a
system summary and flow diagram, and the detailed report now
includes individual stage composition of concentrate and
permeate.
A new blending option capability
eliminates the need to run two separate projections in order
to obtain a blending design, and the blending permeate
quality data can be easily accessed in the permeate quality
spreadsheet. Second-pass scaling calculation is now
available; previous versions of ROSA were only capable of
providing calculations for first-pass scaling.
Users will enjoy easier
navigation and fewer system interruptions with ROSA 6.0.
Improved file management has been incorporated to minimize
running errors with Microsoft™ Data Access Components (MDAC)
files, and it is no longer necessary to have the ROSA 6.0
program running in order to open ROSA files. Also, to better
accommodate the needs of our global customer base, reports
can now be printed in Chinese and Spanish.
For more information about ROSA
6.0, including a complete list of capabilities, Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQs) and program downloading instructions,

Perchlorate Treatment :
Demonstration Projects Solicited for Grants
Arlington,
VA -- The Department of Defense, through the Environmental
Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP), will be
funding demonstration projects for treatment of perchlorate
in drinking water. The objective of this effort is to
evaluate alternative technologies that can significantly
reduce the costs of removing perchlorate for large-scale
drinking water treatment.
ESTCP
intends to fund multiple demonstration projects through this
competitive selection process. The demonstrations will be
conducted at a number of selected public water supply
utilities in southern California that have been impacted by
perchlorate. The due date for these pre-proposals is
November 18, 2004.
The
Environmental Security Technology Certification Program
(ESTCP) is a corporate Department of Defense (DoD) program
that promotes innovative, cost-effective environmental
technologies through demonstration and validation at DoD
sites.

Technology : Industrial Process Wastewater Treatment
Swansea,
UK -- Nature Environmental Solutions Ltd. (NESL) has
recently delivered a 100,000 liter Continuous Biological
Treatment Unit to a large Danish manufacturer. The 100,000
liter plant, which was engineered in stainless steel by
specialist fabricators, Axium Process Ltd, is modular in
construction and designed to treat 4,500 liter/hour of
effluent.
The system comprises of three
custom designed tanks, a specialist aeration system,
semi-automatic controls and comprehensive instrumentation
with a facility to link to an existing site SCADA system.
The feed system incorporates a duplex Pure-Screen filter
system.
The NESL process allows
continuous in-stream treatment of effluent waste before
discharge to the environment. The process generates no
side products such as sludges and efficiently reduces all
pollutants to below Danish Environmental Agency discharge
parameters.
Axium Process specializes in
the fabrication of custom-built frameworks and
skid-mounted systems to a high standard of accuracy and
finish. The company also stocks a comprehensive range of
hygienic stainless steel fittings and components including
filters, tank manways, valves, sightglasses and
sprayballs.

Mr. Char
wants to measure flow in a channel:
I need to measure the flow
in a rectangular filtered water channel (after rapid
gravity sand filters), but since the hydraulics are
already frozen I cannot provide for a weir or flume in the
channel.
I am thinking of using an
area velocity flow meter, but am concerned that the filtered
water will not contain enough particles for the sensor to
measure for velocity. Does anyone have experience on
this?

Matt needs a micro
WWTP:
I'm consulting for a group of
100+ home owners who are having failing septic systems
(reasons vary from inefficient treatment to "overcapacity" -
due to overflow occurring during winter - drain field
becomes inefficient because of the water saturated soil).
I'm looking for all the products/systems available that
would make their wastewater reusable for irrigation or
simply discharge.
A while ago, I heard about a
product similar to a "Micro-WWTP", with a primary, secondary
and tertiary chamber, and an ozone treatment to perfect the
treatment.
All propositions will be
considered. PNW does not have a preference right now. Please
