Fluid Bed Reactor Technology

Envirogen Announces $1.1 M Remediation Systems Orders

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Envirogen, Inc. (Nasdaq: ENVG) announced that it has been awarded two contracts with a combined value of $1.1 million to supply Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR) systems for groundwater remediation. Both orders are for U.S. Department of Defense installations, one at an Army installation in California and the other at a Navy facility in Texas. In each case the Army, Navy and their contractors required quick response from Envirogen to meet an immediate need for treating contaminated groundwater.

Click hereEach contract requires Envirogen to design, build, supervise installation and start up a FBR to treat groundwater. Envirogen's proprietary FBR technology utilizes specialized microorganisms attached to fluidized media contained in a biological reactor to degrade contaminants as groundwater is pumped through the system.

Envirogen has had a long and mutually productive relationship with the Department of Defense. The Department has been a key supporter of many of the emerging technologies pioneered by Envirogen, and the Company is particularly pleased to further extend this relationship with the delivery of leading edge commercial systems to address some of the Department's more pressing environmental needs.

Envirogen's full range of microbial and process engineering expertise enabled the Company to offer a timely, cost-effective solution to these problems. Common groundwater contaminants for which FBR systems offer cost- effective solutions include ammonia, ammonium perchlorate, MTBE, benzene, toluene, nitrate, nitrobenzene, and aniline. As compared to alternative treatment methods, Envirogen's FBR systems offer lower operating costs with high treatment efficiencies and consistent operation with variable feed.

Envirogen is a broad-based environmental systems and services company providing its customers with the maximum benefit per dollar spent for environmental protection. Through the application of its industry leading technologies, Envirogen provides cost-effective means to remove pollution from the air, water and soil.

Completion by 2005

Groundwater Replenishment System Completes First Construction Task

Nation's largest water purification project breaks ground.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. - The Orange County Water District recently completed the first scheduled construction task for the Groundwater Replenishment (GWR) System. A 2,200 foot, 66-inch-diameter pipeline was installed on the west side of the Santa Ana River under the parking lot of the Theodore Lacy Jail in Orange, Calif. This portion was installed well before the remaining 11 miles of pipeline to enable the completion of a new parking lot for the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

The GWR System is a water purification project jointly sponsored by Orange County Water District and Orange County Sanitation District that will provide a new source of high quality water for Orange County residents beginning in 2005. Initially, the System will purify approximately 70 million gallons per day of highly treated sewer water through high-tech membrane treatment processes that include 100 percent processing by reverse osmosis, resulting in near-distilled quality water.

Some of the purified water will be injected underground near the coast to keep ocean salt water from contaminating the fresh water in Orange County's groundwater basin. The remaining water will be transported through a 13-mile pipeline to a percolation pond in northern Orange County. There the water will be filtered again as it seeps into the ground and enters Orange County's deep groundwater aquifers to become part of our future supply of drinking water. The purified water will help lower the overall salinity and hardness of Orange County's groundwater.

Construction of the Lacy portion of the pipeline began in June and ended last week when the last section of pipe was put into the ground. Made of cement and a mortar-lined, coated steel, each pipe is 40 feet long and weighs 23,000 pounds. The pipeline is a key component of the Groundwater Replenishment System. One of the early decisions involved whether to use cement lining on the pipe, and add a small amount of minerals to the water at the plant before the water entered the pipe, or to use expensive epoxy lining. Because the water produced by the membrane systems is so pure, putting it into a conventional concrete pipe would have resulted in the water dissolving the pipe by leaching the minerals out of the concrete. Using the coated steel pipe and adding minerals to the water will not only maintain the quality of the water, but will be more cost effective to the project.

Future construction of the GWR System will include demolition of the existing world-famous Water Factory 21 water purification facility in Fountain Valley; construction of a new high-tech membrane water purification facility; drilling new injection wells and construction of a pump station to move the water up the 13-mile pipeline to Orange County's aquifer recharge facilities.

Rapid Screening

Toxicity Testing System Guards Drinking Water Supply

NEWARK, Del.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 1, 2001--Strategic Diagnostics Inc. (Nasdaq: SDIX) - a leading provider of antibody products and analytical test kits for the food safety and water quality markets, announced today the closing of the acquisition of AZUR Environmental. At the AZUR special shareholders meeting held to vote on the proposal, an overwhelming 96% of the AZUR shareholders voted in favor of the acquisition. The purchase price for the acquisition is 700,000 shares of Series C Preferred Stock, convertible to common shares on a one-for-one basis.

Click hereThe cornerstone product of AZUR Environmental is the Microtox(R) Toxicity Test System. It provides rapid screening and confirmation results, which are cost-effective and easy to perform. With more than 500 peer-reviewed scientific articles and more than 1,700 instruments sold worldwide, the Microtox(R) Toxicity Test System has been approved in regulations or standards in Canada, eight (8) European countries, and has been submitted to the EPA for approval. SDI believes the Microtox(R) Toxicity Test System is becoming the test system of choice with drinking water utilities across the country in evaluating their vulnerability to contamination. In addition to increased security measures, water utilities are testing their supply streams more frequently to guard against tampering with drinking water supplies and distribution systems.

"We purchased the Microtox 500(R) to augment the analytical capabilities of our laboratory as part of our water quality program to protect consumers of our water, including the U.S. Pentagon," commented Elizabeth Turner, Laboratory Manager at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Washington Aqueduct.

Microtox(R) technology is a biosensor-based measurement system for toxicity and provides an effective way to monitor for either accidental or deliberate contamination of water supplies. Microtox(R) systems can rapidly detect increases in toxicity caused by a wide range of organic or inorganic contaminants and are considered more useful than traditional methods because test results are available in near real time allowing for continuous monitoring of drinking water delivery systems. Microtox(R) systems have been successfully used to monitor drinking water supplies and distribution systems for evidence of tampering. Microtox(R) systems were used by many major U.S. cities during the Gulf War in 1991, the Olympic games in Los Angeles and Atlanta and during the Democratic National Convention in 2000, held in Los Angeles.

According to the US EPA, there are more than 350 Public Water Utilities that serve populations greater than 100,000 and more than 3,400 that serve areas with more than 10,000 in the United States. Many of the country's major cities get their drinking water from open reservoirs and easily accessed rivers and lakes. These systems provide drinking water to 81% of the population of the country.

"We are pleased that our Microtox(R) systems can play a crucial role in the overall security of our drinking water supply by providing a means for rapid detection of any deliberate addition of chemicals into the drinking water supply," commented Richard C. Birkmeyer, President and CEO. "We have increased our production of the components that make up the Microtox(R) Toxicity Testing system in response to recent events and can offer municipalities a low cost, easy-to-use test. The Microtox(R) systems can serve in this important application to help deter the risk of deliberate contamination, and maintain the safety of our drinking water supply. The advanced capabilities and strengths of this technology was one of the motivating factors for us to acquire AZUR Environmental."

WEF News

William Bertera New WEF Executive Director

New Leader Brings Expertise in Both Infrastructure Challenges and Association Management to Federation

(Alexandria, Va.) - The Water Environment Federation (WEF) today announced the selection of William J. Bertera as its new Executive Director. Bertera will provide overall management for the Federation, overseeing a $19 million budget and working closely with volunteer leadership and a staff of 116 to accomplish the organization's vision and objectives. He will officially begin his new post on November 1, 2001, replacing Quincalee Brown, who is retiring after 15 years at WEF's helm.

Bertera, currently the executive director of the 13,000-member Society for Nuclear Medicine (SNM), has a consistent record of accomplishment in administration, financial management, international development, and membership service programs. Achievements during his three-year tenure at SNM include guiding the organization through implementation of its first strategic plan, and developing an international membership marketing and service program that resulted in partnership agreements with sister associations around the world. In three years, he increased SNM's organizational net worth by $1.8 million, and grant funding by $250,000.

Bertera's long history of senior executive positions with professional and trade associations includes experience as executive director of the American Public Works Association (APWA) from 1993 to 1998. This position provided him with an understanding of many issues important to WEF members, particularly the infrastructure challenges facing the water and wastewater field. While at APWA, Bertera directed an overhaul of management, information services, and financial reporting systems; expanded national/state advocacy and public affairs programs; and established membership development programs that reversed a multi-year decline. He also was executive director of the Rebuild America Coalition, a national infrastructure advocacy organization, during his time at APWA.

"More than any other candidate, Bill demonstrated knowledge of leadership principles and the ability to apply them, " said Search Committee Chair Richard Kuchenrither, a WEF past president and senior vice president, Black & Veatch Corporation (Kansas City, Mo.). "We fully expect that under Bill, WEF will continue to grow and prosper in a challenging and changing environment."

"Bill comes with an outstanding list of credentials that are very well suited for our organization," said WEF President Joe Stowe, Jr., a vice president and area manager for CH2M Hill (Charlotte, N.C.) and a member of the Search Committee. "When asked why he was interested in the position, Bill unhesitatingly said he believed in what WEF stood for and the work our members perform."

Bertera received a B.S. in business administration from American International College (Springfield, Mass.) and an M.P.A. in urban affairs from American University (Washington, D.C.). He served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army, Transportation Corps from 1966 to 1969. In addition to other positions held in the public and private sectors, Bertera served as managing director of the National Solid Wastes Management Association from 1980 to 1993. He is a resident of Northern Virginia.

Founded in 1928, the Water Environment Federation (WEF) is a not-for-profit technical and educational organization with members from varied disciplines who work toward the WEF vision of preservation and enhancement of the global water environment. The WEF network includes more than 100,000 water quality professionals from 77 Member Associations in 31 countries.
