$200 Million Water Treatment Agreement at Superfund Site
------------------------------------------------------------
The IT Group Announces $200 Million Water Treatment Operations
and Maintenance Agreement at Iron Mountain Mines Superfund
Site in California Agreements Provide Advance Funding of $38
million
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The IT Group, Inc. (NYSE:
ITX) today announced that it has entered into agreements valued
at $200 million to perform operations and maintenance (O&M)
services over 30 years at the Iron Mountain Mines Superfund
site north of Redding, California.
The site, which is currently inactive, was used for gold,
silver, copper and pyrite mining for over 80 years. IT's
scope of work will include operation of an acid mine drainage
water treatment plant and maintenance of site facilities
and other infrastructure. IT's work results from a settlement
among Aventis CropScience USA, Stauffer Management Company,
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the State of
California, whereby Aventis and Stauffer will be released
from past and future liability in return for payments to fund
perpetual O&M.
IT's O&M work will be funded by a unique insurance/financial
product offered by a leading environmental insurance
underwriting firm and brokered by Marsh USA. Through this
product, the insurance firm will fund IT's O&M work for $200
million and will provide IT with additional insurance protection
and potentially other work of up to an additional $135 million.
IT will receive advance funding of approximately $38 million,
principally representing the net present value cost of the
first ten years of O&M and additional work. IT's obligations
to commence work and its receipt of advance payments are
conditional upon final court approval of the settlement. A
hearing on the approval is currently scheduled for December
2000.
Anthony J. DeLuca, The IT Group's chief executive officer and
president stated, "This project represents months of
collaboration with Aventis and the other parties involved to
construct a unique insurance/financial product and scope of
work that mitigates risk and is cost effective. These
arrangements pioneer an innovative, new approach to
environmental management. This project also validates IT's
credentials as a major water treatment, natural resource
management and mining contractor. IT has also demonstrated
its ability to financially engineer large, complex projects
to lower overall cleanup costs and help clients remove
environmental liabilities from their balance sheets. The
project also demonstrates IT's ability to work successfully
and partner with clients, insurers and regulators in large,
multi-party transactions to benefit all involved."
The IT Group, Inc. is a leading provider of consulting,
engineering and construction, infrastructure, water, facility
and environmental management services. Additional information

Level Measurement in Sewage Water Well
------------------------------------------------------------
To prevent ecological problems and to have automatic control
of the process, GDF in the Czech Republic has chosen radar-based
level gauging. This is the most reliable measuring method when
preventing overfill of the company’s sewage water well.
GDF has previously tried many different types of ultrasonic
gauges with poor results. Foam, humidity and temperatures below
the freezing point makes the level measurement difficult.
Having no reliable level control could cause overfill of the
sewage water well and discharge of dirty water into the river
nearby.
Since December 1999 the radar level gauge Saab LoopRadar
reliably controls the movement of dirty water in the plant via
valves. Since the level gauge works so reliably, the customer
has no supervision costs. Saab LoopRadar controls the entire
process automatically.
Application
The installation is made on an open underground concrete well
at the outlet of the sewage plant containing dirty water. The
well is 6 m (19.7 ft) high and the Saab LoopRadar gauge with
a cone antenna is mounted on an arm over a 1.2x1.2 m (3.9x3.9
ft) opening to measure the level.
The gauge is mounted on a support arm in the middle of the well
opening. The analog output signal is sent to a PC and an
automatic system for readout and control.

Hands-off, Self-cleaning Screen Offers State-of-the-Art Design
------------------------------------------------------------
CHALFONT, Penn.- USFilter will present the Center-Flo/RP screen
as part of the Water Environment Federation’s Technology
Exposition and Conference (WEFTEC) in Anaheim, Calif. October
15-18, 2000. The continuous self-cleaning, filter-type screen,
designed by USFilter’s Link-Belt Headworks Products, not only
removes debris from the waste stream, but also dewaters and
compacts the debris.
The screen’s unique flow pattern allows the flow to enter into
the center of the screen and exit out the bottom and two sides
of the grid assembly. As the wastewater exits through the grid
assembly, the debris is captured and transported up to the
discharge point of the screen. The debris is then removed
from the grid assembly via a spray system that washes the
debris into the integral screw compactor. The debris is then
dewatered, compacted and transported to a transfer screw
conveyor or trash container. The free water from the compactor
flows out of the drain holes in the trough and returns to
the wastewater stream.
The system offers state-of-the-art design:
-quick and easy installation
-removable screen panels with non-metallic inserts
-direct drive system
-¼, 3/8 and ½-inch spacing
-built-in compactor and bypass door
-module frame design
USFilter, a Vivendi Water company, is the leading global

water and wastewater treatment systems, products and services,
with operations in more than 100 countries. USFilter, which

Water Environment Federation Launches New "MyWEF" Web Site
------------------------------------------------------------
Innovative Customization Features Enable Users to Create Site
to Meet Individual Needs
(Alexandria, Va.)-A dynamic link to cutting-edge water quality
information was unveiled today, as the Water Environment
Federation (WEF) launched MyWEF - its new, easy-to-access Web
site. Online at www.wef.org, MyWEF introduces a host of
customization and personalization features that enable users
to create an online water quality resource that complements
their interests.
By taking advantage of the free registration at MyWEF, each
user can provide a profile and choose the content he/she wants
to see on a daily basis. The site’s specialized personalization
features immediately streamline data per user specifications
and can be edited at any time to keep up with a user’s growing,
changing needs. For example, if a user indicates during the
personalization process that biosolids is a particular interest,
headlines and resources on biosolids will be featured
prominently on his/her version of the Web site.
"I believe that the Federation’s new Web site will provide
water and wastewater professionals who are interested in
staying on top of the field with a total solution approach,"
said WEF Director of New Media Sue Whitney. "Users can learn
about the latest issues and technology, purchase products at
the Online Bookstore, and network with peers - all on one site."
This 'one-stop shopping' benefit means that users have fast,
easy access to all of the site’s e-commerce, e-publishing,
e-training, and e-networking services.
In addition to providing the latest water quality news, the
new site continues WEF’s popular Technical Discussion Groups
and adds chat rooms. Chat rooms can be public for anyone to
participate, or private for registered users to choose whom
they want to chat with and when. Colleagues can share expertise
on a variety of technical issues and conduct business in live
time.
Other benefits of the site include an online searchable
archive of WEF publications, featuring full-text articles
from 1999 WEF periodicals and papers from 2000 specialty
conferences; general news headlines - including business,
entertainment, and sports -- available to compliment
technical information; and full Internet search capability
powered by the highly-rated GoogleTM search engine.
Founded in 1928, the Water Environment Federation is a
not-for-profit technical and educational organization.
Its goal is to preserve and enhance the global water
environment. Federation members number nearly 40,000 water
quality professionals and specialists from around the
world, including engineers, scientists, government officials,
utility and industrial managers and operators, academics,
educators and students, equipment manufacturers and
distributors, and other environmental specialists.

Mr. Capano want to know about stilling wells:
Does anyone know of any literature which discusses the use of
stilling wells with analytical probes? Anyone out there know
of any installations of this kind? I am interested in the pros
and cons of such an installation.
Thanks to all in advance.

Jefferie wants to know about CO2 dosage needed for recarbonation:
I am a student at U of Iowa designing a water treatment plant
for a project. Our study group is having some trouble determining
CO2 dosages. Our plant has capacity of 15.0 MGD. The recarb
units are directly after softening. The pH of the water is
10.6 - 11.1 and a final pH of 7.5-8.5 is needed.
If anyone can help me determine CO2 dosages so I can size
storage tank, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
